SPOILER WARNING!
This article contains HEAVY SPOILERS for the Shadow Slave webnovel. Please read at your own risk. |
“ You know… when I just came here, I was ready to die. After all, in this whole world — two worlds, actually — there's not a single soul who cares whether I live or die. When I'm gone, no one will be sad. No one will even remember that I existed. But then I changed my mind. Somewhere along the way, I decided to survive. I must survive, no matter what...To spite you all. ” ― Sunny to the Hero,
Chapter 13 Moment of Truth
Sunless (or Sunny), is the main character of Shadow Slave. Growing up in the outskirts and leading a life of deceit and focusing on his own survival, he initially has a bleak outlook on life, even resigning himself to his fate when he was infected by the Nightmare Spell. But then, inside his First Nightmare, he resolved to himself that he must survive, no matter what.[1][71]
Appearance
Debut - Waking World
He is a frail-looking young man with pale skin and dark circles under his eyes. He was unhealthily thin and pale, looking haggard in cheap clothes due to lack of sleep.[1] After surviving his First Nightmare, the changes in his physique were subtle but noticeable. His pale skin seemed a little healthier, his muscles a bit more pronounced. He looked slender and lean instead of emaciated and frail, as he did before. There was a slight luster to his dark hair and a shine to his eye.[55]
Debut - Dream Realm
He had changed a lot since the events in the Labyrinth. His face was much sharper and angular now, the last remnants of youthful roundness chased away from it by the harsh gauntlet of the Labyrinth. It was thin and pale, with dark circles under his eyes and other signs of extreme exhaustion. His black hair was longer, falling over his eyes in a dirty mess. What changed the most were the eyes themselves. Deep in their dark depths, there was a glint of calm, heavy, bleak coldness that had not been there before. He, too, now possessed the look of a seasoned fighter. The type of calculating coldness hiding in the eyes of such men was known as the "murder math" in the outskirts. He had the eyes of a killer and even deeper than that, visible only to him, golden threads of Weaver's inhuman legacy glowed mysteriously in the darkness.[72]
| “ | No student of mine would be stupid enough to actually live in the ruins. Not to mention returning looking so… feral. | ” |
― Effie, | ||
After he stayed three months in the ruins of the Dark City, he reunited with Nephis and the rest, Effie noted that he looked feral. He wore ragged clothes, dirty hair, a crooked grin, and a hint of madness burning in his eyes.[23]
Awakened - Waking World
Almost every Awakened was pleasant to look at, but Sunny was far from being the most outstanding in terms of appearance among them. There was something elusive about him that attracted attention and almost demanded it. He still was a pale young man with dark hair, a small height, a delicate, slender build, and perfect white skin. His dark eyes had a humorous, slightly mischievous spark in them. He wasn't exactly handsome, but due to his small stature, pale complexion, and dark hair, he looked like a beautiful porcelain doll.[73]
There was a subtle strangeness about him that it seemed as though his every move, every word was ever so slightly not exactly how they should have been. Not really wrong, but also not completely right. This quality was equally as disturbing as it was magnetic.[73]
Awakened - Dream Realm
Due to only eating the poisonous meat of Mordant Mimic after he fell into the tear, Sunny had practically no fat left. His skin looked a bit feverish and was drawn tautly across his lean muscles, making for a sight that was both splendid and a little disturbing. Stripped to the waist, the Soul Serpent coiled around his pale and lithe body.[74]
Awakened - Second Nightmare
Ascended - Waking World
The young man was not very tall, but his slender build and stylish attire made him look very charming. With his porcelain skin and raven black hair, he looked like an exquisite doll. His striking dark eyes seemed to glint with good-natured humor.
At the same time, there was something cold about them that made those who looked at the young man for too long shiver. It was as though shadows grew a little deeper around him. — Description from the perspective of his students, Chapter 751 Master Sunless |
Sunny was back to being a human again, to his own slender, pale body.[26]
The scrawny kid from the outskirts was gone. Instead, a young man with porcelain skin and striking black eyes took his place. Deep in their darkness, visible only to himself, golden threads of Weaver's forbidden legacy glowed with the flame of divinity.[75]
Sunny wore stylish civilian clothes which were predominantly black, with subdued grey accents. There was something about him that demanded attention and also because he was incredibly attractive.[46] He was undeniably attractive but not exactly masculine in appearance.[76]
From Luster's perspective, Sunny was of small stature, with flawless ivory skin, black hair, and unfathomable dark eyes. He was extremely young and looked like a porcelain doll. In fact, he was kind of cute in a strange, unsettling sort of way. He thought of Sunless as a shorty.[77]
| “ | No, you idiot. The pale kid… you know, the one who looks like a haunted vintage doll… | ” |
― About Sunny's appearance, | ||
After Sunny bound the Mantle of the Underworld to his soul, using the [Soulbound Relic] enchantment, his skin appeared pretty much the same, but somehow even paler and smoother. (See [Marble Shell])[78] It was noticed by Roan that he seemed older, though not by his appearance.[79]
He has porcelain skin and black hair, eyes that glisten like dark gemstones. When he appeared, the darkness enveloping the surroundings suddenly seemed to become deeper, darker, and more frightening.[52]
Ascended - Third Nightmare
Sunny had always been lean while his muscles resembling a taut steel wire cables since the Forgotten Shore. Now he had become too sculpted and defined, with his abs resembling a washboard. He lost weight during the Nightmare Desert journey and hunger on the Black Turtle carcass, leaving his body all skin and muscle, with no fat left. Some men strive for his physique. It was also mentioned that he earned strange glances from Nephis.[80]
...slender young man wearing a dark mantle, his porcelain face drowning in the shadows. His lightless eyes were like two pools of unfathomable darkness, cold and piercing. There was a crown of black metal resting on his head, shaped to resemble a twisting serpent.
— Cronos' description of Sunny, Chapter 1354 By Grace of Dusk |
Transcendent - Waking World
Before his Transcended, his appearance was a bit bothersome, but now as a Saint, mundane humans are often startled by his appearance.[81]
Transcendent - Dream Realm
He looked a little bit like Rain, a much more glamorous, handsome, and male version of her, but on the shorter side. His exquisite appearance was perfectly human but a bit too sublime.[82]
To Nephis, he was young, delicate, and good-looking. Despite being used to the company of extremely attractive people, Sunny stood out even among them, most Saints included. He was not very tall, had a slender build and delicate features, smooth and white skin like flawless marble with onyx eyes that were like darkly glistening gems. His raven-black hair was carelessly gathered in a knot, and he had a subtle sense of calm confidence that seemed understated but almost demanded attention. His was like an elegant porcelain doll dressed in fine black silk.[83]
According to Cassie, Sunny does look like a Legacy, possibly due to the confidence that comes with being a Saint.[84]
During the beach date with Nephis, beneath the Nebulous Mantle, he wore a simple black swimming trunks. Sunny's appearance is described as striking and unconventional, especially for someone perceived as a gallant and scholarly enchanter. His body is lithe, with lean muscles and not a gram of fat, resembling something "chiseled from marble by an enamored sculptor". His flawless porcelain skin enhances the contrast of his raven-black hair and dark eyes, making them appear even darker. Most striking of all is an intricate tattoo of a great serpent that coils around his arms and torso. The black ink of the serpent, set against his fair skin, resembles pure darkness, with each onyx scale so vividly detailed that it almost seems alive.[85]
Sunless was slender, beautiful, and nice. His features were very handsome, but not in a rugged kind of way. Instead, he was gallant and charming in a soft and charming manner. His onyx eyes were usually calm, with a hint of wry humor hidden in their dark depths. Sometimes, they were clouded by a veil of strange melancholy, and sometimes, they were glistening with sincere mirth.
He made Nephis feel at ease. — Nephis' description, Chapter 1813 Behind the Mask |
Supreme
… a slender young man was sitting on the throne in a relaxed pose, wearing a simple black tunic. The young man had skin as pale as flawless white jade, silky black hair, and eyes that were like two onyx gems. His delicate beauty was almost sublime, making June feel like he was looking at a piece of art, not a human being.
What was more, he could not sense the cold indifference, disdainful arrogance, and chilling bloodthirst that people had associated with the Lord of Shadows. Instead, he felt… nothing at all, as if the young man had no presence whatsoever. — June's Description, Chapter 2275 Shadow Boss |
According to June, his smile was beautiful enough to stop hearts.[86]
Sunny's original body is gone. His existence is now divided between seven incarnations, which he can maintain endlessly or relinquish control over, returning authority to his shadows.[87] He was no more than a shadow himself—albeit a divine shadow.[88]
He could change his height if he wanted as a shadow, and shadows are inherently formless so he could assume any form he wanted, but his original appearance felt the most natural. He and Nephis likes it.[19]
In Chapter 2556, a figure rose from the shadow of the second gate. It was a young man with porcelain skin and raven-black hair, with eyes so dark that they almost seemed like two glistening onyx gemstones. Everywhere he passed, the shadows seemed to grow deeper.
In Chapter 3144, in the gathering of demigods, he is described as an exquisitely beautiful man with porcelain skin, raven-black hair, and eyes like onyx jewels. He appears as if a sea of darkness was given form. There is something serpentine about his elegant movements, while the shadows across the chamber grow deeper when he appears.
True Form
Just before the tentacles reached him, he gritted his teeth and released the defensive barrier of the Onyx Serpent Shell, allowing it to dissolve into the darkness. He released the constraints giving his own shadow a human shape, as well, and let it spread to its true, unfathomable vastness.
In the next moment, Sunny turned into a vast cloud of formless darkness. — Chapter 2612 Horror of the Abyss |
In Chapter 2614, it was mentioned that when Sunny confronted Old Tom without the protection of his Shell, he revealed his true form as a vast, formless shadow. That turned the tide of battle in his favor but also left him vulnerable to soul damage.
According to Cassie, Sunny's true essence is that of a shadow who could take the form of a human. Unlike ordinary beings, whose mortal flesh serves as the natural foundation of their existence, Sunny's human body is merely a shell that contained his true essence. His physical form is simply a form he took. This distinction becomes especially significant during the transformation into a Supreme, where ordinary humans must undergo the process of being reforged and reborn as a more perfect being, while Sunny's transformation occurred almost instantly due to the fundamentally non-human nature of his existence.[89]
Personality
Childhood
Volume 1 & 2
| “ | No matter what happened, you somehow always managed to keep your real thoughts, desires, and reasons hidden. I've never seen anyone so adept at deception. Congratulations, Sunny! The mind games you played with us were almost as devious as the mental hex of the Soul Devourer. It was nothing short of inspiring. You can even easily turn truths into lies. How… brilliant. I never even knew that such a thing was possible. Silly me. I didn't know a lot of things before I met you. | ” |
― Nephis, | ||
He is a cynical, disillusioned young man with a bleak outlook on life. Despite this, he harbors a sense of humor and a strong desire to not only survive but also thrive in this world. During his First Nightmare, he exhibited caution and devious cunning that allowed him to survive it,[71] earning him praise from the Spell, "Your treachery truly knows no bounds".[64] He is smart and capable of being cold and ruthless when the situation asks for it.[91][22] In the academy, he discovered a couple of new things about his self, deep down he was apparently rude arrogant and more than a little bit lustful.[92] He is so adept at deception that he earned the reputation of being a pathological liar, and additionally, he is a paranoid person.[92][93][94]
Initially, he has always strived to be self-sufficient, not allowing himself to depend on anyone. In his mind, this was the true meaning of strength. However, he changed his mind after fighting together with Nephis in the Dream Realm.[95] He had changed without even noticing. Somehow, he had grown unsatisfied with his previous way of life — one where his sole goal of survival at all costs overshadowed everything else. Whether he lived or died had always been the only thing that mattered. But now, "how" he lived mattered more.[96] He is a very rapacious person, but he knows how to keep his avarice in check most of the time.[97][98][99] After leaving the ancient stronghold, his behavior became highly erratic and a bit crazy.[100]
His mental state had suffered greatly because of a number of reasons:[101]
- The fact that there was no Gateway in the Bright Castle. It turned out that everything he had endured to make it to the Dark City, the crushing intensity of their journey through the Labyrinth, the diabolical trap of the Soul Devourer and their escape from it, and the cold and harrowing night of traversing the dark sea, were all for nothing.
- The feeling of alienation he felt while living with Nephis, Cassie, and all the newcomers in the outer settlement.[102]
- The terrible epiphany of what Cassie's vision really meant.[103]
- The fatal mistake in the conversation with Harper and the brutal murder that followed. [104]
- Nephis, after her powerful declaration to destroy the Spell, made it impossible for him to trust her any longer.[105]
- The excruciating, never-ending sea of torturous pain he suffered after being mortally wounded by the Black Knight.[106]
Sunny used the shield of madness to save himself from the bottomless despair that threatened to destroy him completely. It protected him from having to look at the heartbreaking truth and remember it. Additionally, he has the habit of making himself an outcast to prevent anyone from making him one.[101]
Volume 3
Even though he wasn't the same penniless kid anymore, he was an Awakened, one marked as a special strategic asset by the government and was considerably wealthy, connected, and even powerful. Deep down, he still believed that the statement held true. His clothes and circumstances might have changed, but Sunny himself remained the same. Twisted and damaged, as anyone who had seen the truth of this world would be.[107]
Now that he had risen above his previous pathetic self, he had a whole swarm of new, much more serious problems. Nephis, the Sovereigns, the legacy of the mysterious Weaver, and all of these things promised a future full of turmoil and danger. He was not exactly the kind of person who had good things to offer to anybody.[107]
Despite how complicated his relationship with Cassie is, he could put away his resentment for the sake of mutual benefit. He's a very pragmatic person when he needs to be.[108] He was really bad at dealing with his feelings and for him, fighting hordes of Nightmare Creatures was much easier.[109]
In the waking world, Sunny exhibited being a petty person. An example of this was when he ate a juicy peach with gusto in front of Cassie without offering one to the latter.[110] Another was when Rain laughed at him when he said he could make Kai teach her how to shoot a bow personally, causing Rain to taunt him to might as well invite him to dinner which he actually did.[111][112]
Volume 4
His mind possessed a remarkable flexibility to it, an insidious ability to adapt to any circumstance almost in an instant, as though it was formless and shapeless by nature, and thus easily molded to fit any situation.[113]
He had grown up in the outskirts, fighting for his life in a cruel, indifferent world. He had to learn a lot of vicious lessons to survive. Those lessons made him selfish, cynical, and jaded, unwilling to trust anyone or believe in anything.
Those qualities had helped him to remain alive, but as his life changed, some of them turned into a hindrance. Slowly and painfully, he had shed his previous skin and learned new things. He learned to trust those who deserved to be trusted, and have hope in himself and the future. However, one thing he never managed to leave behind — and did not really want to — was his spite. Spite had been the only thing that motivated him to survive the First Nightmare, after all. Back then, and maybe even now, it was his only reason to live. — Chapter 728 Spiteful Shadow |
Volume 5
“ It takes a certain kind of person to face the very depths of despair, and still continue to fight. You are one such person, Sunny. ” ― Jet to Sunny,
Chapter 812 Naval Convoy
According to Effie, as long as he lacks conviction, he can never be stronger than Nephis.[115] He might not have been the most principled person, but only a few could boast of having more determination than him. Otherwise, he would not have survived all the terrible trials that life had thrown his way.[116]
His own goals are to have a good life, to be free, and to make sure that those he cared about were safe. Although his desires were centered around himself, he considers them a great virtue.[116]
Usually, Sunny felt a lot of negative emotions every time he thought about the Innate Ability of his Aspect, Shadow Bond, which tied him to Changing Star's will. However, after he learned how he and Nephis can augment each other, his curiosity and greed for power briefly overpowered his resentment.[117]
He can maintain composure despite seething emotions, honed through years of battles and conflicts.[118]
He cared deeply for his sister, willingly providing her with a handicap, believing she didn't have to grow strong or die, and seeing himself as capable of being strong for both of them.[119]
He admitted that he was contrarian and antisocial enough to balance the agreeableness of people who chose the life of service.[120] Apparently, both Nephis and Obel thinks that he underestimates himself and his abilities.[121][122]
He felt indignation as he witnessed the deaths of good men and women in Antarctica, while powerful ones were absent. Despite leading the caravan and pretending to be an intrepid commander, he felt much more comfortable living alone in the dark.[123]
Previously, Sunny held contempt for Legacies, believing they were arrogant and hateful, someone who did not deserve the unfair privileges bestowed upon them by nothing except for birthright. However, he eventually valued and admired some of them.[124]
In the end, he did not find his conviction and did not need it. All he ever wanted was to live a good life and keep the people he cared about safe. He hated the Sovereigns because of the world they built, and their pursuit of conviction which trampled millions in the process.[125]
Volume 6
Although Sunny was aware of his strength, he also understood its limitations. The Winter Beast had given him a painful lesson on the subject.[126]
Sunny contemplated his life without lying, imagining if it would have been easier or harder. He would not have become enslaved but would have never gotten close to others, choosing to lie and manipulate them instead of trusting them. This fear of rejection and betrayal would probably lead to his death or at least turn into something ugly and twisted.[127]
Sunny, who once wanted to be as strong as Changing Star, now realizes his understanding of real strength has been misguided.[128]
In the past, Sunny had tried to remain under the radar by hiding his power to appear weak and insignificant. After arriving in Antarctica, he was forced to reveal enough of his strength to avoid being perceived as weak. Now, he needs a new disguise. Sunny's goal is to deceive the representatives of the great clans and gain respect for his abilities.[129]
Sunny knew how precious and fragile trust was. He had taken time to extend his own trust toward Effie and Kai, but his friends respected his silence and did not push him to reveal his secrets.[130]
Sunny had been aiming to achieve his freedom which had his real goal all along. However, he found himself bound to more people, places, and things than ever before. He was bound by his own desires. This realization led him to question the power of the Demon of Desire, which had been one of the most powerful among the daemons, except for Weaver. He considered whether being bound to people, ideas, and values was a good thing, as he had chosen these bonds himself. Despite this, a small part of Sunny rebelled against this, wanting to be free and unrestrained. He had to finish his mission, which was to evacuate the citizens of Antarctica, and then explore other options. Despite his distant dreams, Sunny remained calm and determined, possibly recognizing his true conviction.[131]
Volume 7
Before, Sunny had been a powerless street rat who only cared about himself and how to keep his secret. Now, the scrawny kid from the outskirts was gone, replaced by a fair young man with eyes so cold and dark that it was easy to cut yourself on their chilling gaze.[132]
He put a lot of meaning in personal strength, which is not unwise, but it serves as an artificial limit. He learned from Neph's Second Nightmare that personal strength is important but pales in comparison to true power. In the Third Nightmare, Sunny realized that empowering his allies, such as Nephis, Cassie, Effie, Kai, Jet, and Mordret, were as much a part of his power as his Shadows.[133]
His Flaw had landed him in trouble, but it also benefited him. Without the Flaw, he would have continued to lie and deceive, remaining isolated and untrusting. The mindset that saved his life in the outskirts would have become the end of him in the perilous world of the Spell. He would not have grown close to others and made friends, potentially leading to his death in a ditch, miserable and alone.[134]
Sunny was not the most emotionally intelligent person, or at least he had not been before. If anything, his emotional development had been stunted — first by the rough life in the outskirts, then by the ruthless reality of the Nightmare Spell.
— Chapter 1432 Admission |
Sunny had complicated relationships with his closest companions, Nephis, and Cassie. They have been in a tangled mess of emotions and unspoken things, resulting in a strained and emotionally charged relationship for a long time, especially with Nephis. It took him a long time to recognize how he felt about Nephis.[40]
In Chapter 1478, Sunny recognizes that his desire to protect his companions is more powerful than his vindictive desire to avenge himself.
Sunny had long realized that his allies were a part of his power but still felt disappointed in himself for not doing well in the Nightmare, as he had performed exceptionally well until the battle in Twilight happened. Though experiencing a setback was a change of pace.[135]
Volume 8
Sunny felt more at home in the Dream Realm as a Transcendent. Despite the world's rejection of him, remained determined to live, even more than ever before. His personality quirk was that he wanted to survive out of spite no matter the cost.[136]
Sunny believes that knowledge is the origin of power, but it is also the heaviest thing in the world.[137]
He is trying to find lost knowledge and forbidden things, such as the Doom War, the Nightmare Spell, and the purpose of the Nightmare Spell. He also wants to find the remaining parts of Weaver's forbidden lineage, as he is not satisfied with having an incomplete collection of fragments.[137]
In Chapter 1690, there was a shift in Sunny's perception of power after becoming Transcendent, which led him to understand that truly powerful beings don't rely on external weapons or tools for strength. Instead, they recognize that they are the source of power, and those tools merely serve to channel their inherent strength, rather than provide external might.
He was a self-centered individual who prioritized himself over others. There were a few people out there he would die for, but it was because they were dear to him, and their loss would hurt him terribly. Selflessness is only attainable for those who have not suffered enough pain and anguish. People who had experienced anguish and pain knew the value of selfishness because caring about oneself meant not having to suffer that anguish again.[138]
Sunny endured great tragedies to continue his journey. He couldn't remain unmoved despite his world's destruction and species extinction. Knowledge is indeed the heaviest thing in the world.[138] He no longer cared about the bitter past, as it no longer influenced him, as he had outgrown the outskirts.[139]
Sunny must plot the downfall of Anvil of Valor, Ki Song, and the most dangerous of the three Sovereigns. The destruction is accelerating, and the only way to stop it is by ensuring the birth of new gods. Nephis, who had proclaimed her determination to conquer every Nightmare, had previously been considered insane. Sunny also was not quite healthy in the mental department himself. He had not been for a long time. Despite his mental health issues, he dares to dream of it, as there is little he is not willing to do.[138]
Volume 9
In Chapter 1908, Sunny's subconscious bias was shattered when he realized that each Aspect was unique and there were all kinds of them out there.
Despite Nephis' Aspect which made her nearly immortal, Sunny is deeply shaken by the revelation that Moonveil nearly killed her. This shatters his belief in Nephis' invincibility and highlights the uniqueness of each Aspect. He briefly considers using his incarnation to attack Clan Song's leaders in retaliation. Still, he abandoned the idea, realizing it would endanger Rain and humanity's future by losing every Saint in the war. Sunny acknowledges his emotional reaction is reckless, fearing for Nephis' life and the possibility of his own capture.[140]
Volume 10
After becoming a Supreme, Sunny occasionally found himself lost—particularly when his focus slipped. In those moments, the overwhelming influx of sensory input from the countless shadows under his control blurred his sense of identity, making it difficult to remember his humanity. In reality, he was no longer truly human. Although he tried to distinguish himself from the shadows, the truth was that he was no more than a shadow himself—albeit a divine shadow.[88] (Refer to Sunny's Process to Natural Supremacy)
Sunny was experiencing a complex mix of emotions. On the surface, he felt warmth and joy while teasing Kai—a fleeting return to a familiar, comforting dynamic that allowed him to momentarily forget his painful reality of being forgotten. There was a sense of regained companionship that brought him hope. However, this sweetness was tinged with a deep, lingering bitterness. Being around people he once shared strong bonds with—Effie, Jet, Cassie, and even Nephis—highlighted the ache of incompleteness in his current relationships. Despite being present and still able to protect and connect with them, it felt like something vital was missing. Sunny yearned not just to be there but to be truly known, remembered, and loved. His reflections revealed an inner turmoil driven by his desire for recognition and belonging, clashing with the harsh truth that no one could fully know or love him because of his unique, fateless existence and the realization that being loved and worship of humanity would become its doom. While he usually managed to suppress these feelings and enjoy the moments he had, recent revelations about his future forced him to confront the inevitability of isolation tied to his freedom. This led to a somber realization: freedom, for him, was inherently lonely.[141]
Sunny felt a deep sense of disconnection from his humanity, brought on by his prolonged experience of living through multiple bodies and perspectives. While being alone in his own mind again was both comforting and unsettling, it made him realize how fundamentally his consciousness had changed. He recognized that his mind was no longer purely human—not just in form, but in essence—shaped by the unnatural breadth and repetition of his experiences. This transformation wasn't about losing emotion like Nephis, but about evolving into something beyond human due to the sheer scale and variety of his perceptions, raising unsettling questions about identity and what it means to remain human.[142]
He felt a profound awareness of his ongoing transformation—both a promising step toward Apotheosis and a deeply unsettling erosion of his humanity. Though still young, he was already witnessing how much he had changed and feared becoming like the Supreme humans he despised, such as Anvil and Ki Song—powerful but detached and indifferent to human suffering. He missed his True Name, once a grounding force, and feared the loss of self in endless change. Yet amid this unease, Sunny found comfort in the one constant of his life: his unwavering love for Nephis. Despite all the trials and separations, their bond endured, and he realized that while he saw himself as her anchor to humanity, she might also be his.[142]
Volume 11
About Shadow Bond
Sunny no longer feels the deep well of complicated, irreconcilable emotions that the runes once caused, such as anger and indignation mixed with love and longing pain, resentment, fear, hope, comfort. He did not feel anything special when looking at them and remained at peace because he had made peace with the truth they showed. Previously, the runes represented something forced upon him in violation of his will, which he resented with all his heart. Now, they signify an expression of his own free will and a choice Sunny had made freely, so they no longer provoke negative emotions.[143]
Sunny now views the Shadow Bond as the Innate Ability that lay at the core of his Aspect rather than a Flaw. He recognizes its benefits and believes he would have been hard-pressed to find a better master than Changing Star of the Immortal Flame clan. He notes the exceptional value of Nephis' Divine Aspect and healing ability, and states that if forced to choose between Nephis and Mordret, he would choose Nephis in an instant, since their powers complemented each other so well. He recalls that together they could augment each other, with the whole of their combined power being greater than the sum of its parts, and believes this effect is now even greater as Supremes.[143]
Seeing Nephis' runes gives Sunny the urgent need to find her. He believes she is likely remembering him, the past they shared, and what they had felt for each other, while also possibly remembering how he had abandoned her in the depths of a Nightmare. This uncertainty causes him anxiety and distraction. Even so, he remains focused on the bond's strategic significance, recognizing that it makes them dramatically more powerful together and that united by the Shadow Bond, encounters with enemies such as the Vile Thieving Bird would likely have ended differently.[143]

Chapter 286 Blessings of the Fire
When Sunny finally slipped into a deep slumber, he dreamt of a mountain. The flow of time was reversed. In there, a slave caravan appeared, moving back down the mountain in the clamor of chains. Starting out as a powerless slave, shackled and already half-dead, Sunny was bewildered. The body he used for the trial was that of a temple slave, born as a slave, from the last temple of the Shadow God that was destroyed by the Imperials. Their Empire was protected by the mighty War God.[144]
[A nameless slave ascended the Black Mountain. Both heroes and monsters fell by his hand. Unbroken, he entered the ruined temple of a long-forgotten god and spilled his blood on the sacred altar. The gods were dead, and yet they listened.]
— Appraisal by the Spell, Chapter 15 Shadow Slave |
During the trial, he defeated a dormant beast, three unknown dormant humans, an awakened human, awakened tyrant, and received the Shadow God's blessing. He had achieved the impossible that the Spell gave him "Glorious" as the final appraisal, bestowed a True Name, "Lost from Light", and even gave him a Divine Aspect, something that was never heard of before.[64]
Second Nightmare
- Main article: Second Nightmare (Event)
[A lonesome shadow came to a land of shattered dreams. It was captured and thrown into a cage, but escaped by weaving sorceries from its own soul. The shadow beheaded itself to take the slave collar off its neck, and lost its heart to win its freedom.
Leaving the coliseum behind, the shadow traveled far and got ensnared. It lived a hundred lives and died a hundred deaths within a dreadful nightmare, forgetting what it was and where it came from. The shadow did not break, and so, the nightmare broke instead. Free once again, the shadow befriended a mad sorcerer, a feral child, a crippled archer, and a blind prophet. Together, they collected the deaths of the immortal lords and waged a war against the holy city. The lords were killed, the city was destroyed. The shadow broke the chains of Hope, and set Desire free.] — Appraisal by the Spell, Chapter 743 Appraisal |
After the Second Nightmare ended, his final appraisal by the Spell is "Excellent".[145] One of his Attributes, [Child of Shadows] evolved to [Master of Shadows] and one of his Aspect Abilities, [Shadow Control] had evolved during his ascension.[146]

Battle Ability
Sunny behaves like a cowardly weakling, but in fact, he's the last person in the Dark City any would want to face in combat. He is far more dangerous than anyone thinks he is.[23] The fighting style Nephis had given him was designed to be as adaptable as possible and seamlessly incorporate elements of other styles. It was a perfect foundational battle art. With the firm and grounded style, he weaved into his technique, his fighting ability improved earning the praises of Nephis and Kai.[147][148] Sunny was a skilled fighter. But he was an even more talented deceiver.[149]
Sunny had improved his once rudimentary archery skill after months of fighting in Antarctica. His accuracy was now scarily perfect.[79]
Sunny won dire battles with cunning and guile, using underhanded tricks and using every single resource available to him in unexpected ways. He used force of will and boundless spitefulness to tear victories from fate. Although he was good in fights, his sharp sword was not what made him truly deadly.[150]
Other Abilities
Sorcery
Sunny inherited the intrinsic predisposition to weaving from the Demon of Fate. He was able to intuitively sense the purpose of spellweave elements due to his connection to Weaver. This talent was literally in his blood.[151]
After knowing the name of the memory, the patterns became easier to discern, and weaving through every part of the tapestry of ethereal strings was the same name that serves as the bridge and unifying element between them.[151] Knowing that the name of a Memory was integral to its spellweave, allowed Sunny to see the pattern as a whole and was finally able to change the memories without destroying them entirely.[152] Learning how to weave runes required both a good understanding of weaves and a deep knowledge of the runic language the Spell used.[153]
Sunny's knowledge of weaving had mostly come from studying the weaves created by the Nightmare Spell, and the Memories created by the enchanters of Valor were also enchanted using unique Aspects.[154]
Sunny's skill as a sorcerer had come from comparing the patterns of different enchantments to each other and trying to deduce the common logic behind them.[154] He was more of a copycat than an actual sorcerer. His repertoire consisted of recreating the weaves of various enchantments he had gleaned from his own Memories rather than creating them himself. He had learned the fundamental principles of sorcery through Blood Weave and the ability to see weaves. His achievements were impressive compared to other modern Awakened, but he was still a novice.[155]
By learning an entirely different school of weaving using Ananke's dark mantle, his ability to compare and deduce the fundamental principles of sorcery could take a qualitative leap. Studying the differences and commonalities between the weaves allowed him to learn the unfamiliar ways of its creator and push his own skill forward.[154]
Weapon Mastery
Sunny was most comfortable with swords like his serpentine odachi, Azure Blade, and Midnight Shard. He was also extremely adept with the spear, and he was developing his archery ability steadily. Sunny had learned enough to feel comfortable using other types of weapons as well, but he still had a long way to go before mastering them entirely.[156]
Aspect Ability & Legacy Applications
- Shadow Shell
- Shadow Incarnation (Tangible Shadow Form)
Revelation of Madness
Sunny who had grown vastly more powerful from when he was Awakened, received revelations of madness from the Sin of Solace[157], had glimpsed the secrets left behind by Ariel and was inoculated against the power of the forbidden runes by the knowledge of the Forgotten God. Now, he did not feel repelled by the runes carved into the walls of the Ebony Tower but only caused him a slight discomfort. He also had to be careful as the knowledge of the Void could potentially plant Corruption into his Soul.[158]
After years of wandering and exploring ancient ruins, he could decipher the meaning of the forbidden runes, but a proper translation would take time.[158]
Vitality
In Chapter 2849, the Deathless launched a vast cloud of arrows, javelins, and makeshift projectiles, each carrying enough force and murderous will to kill a Supreme, demonstrating that their attacks were powerful enough to destroy beings of that rank. However, beings like Sunny and Nephis, who possessed near-immortality, were described as extremely difficult to kill. This near-immortality was a sword that cut both ways—while it made someone like them hard to kill even against such deadly attacks, it also meant that defeat could be far worse than death, since an enemy could impale, surround, and restrain him, leaving him trapped in endless suffering rather than granting the mercy of death.
Will
- Main article: Will
Sunny's Will is described as subtle and insidious, akin to a weapon that only knows how to kill, as Nephis once remarked. However, this metaphor only scratches the surface — his Will is flexible and versatile, willing to assume any form necessary to defeat the enemy. Just like shadows are inherently formless, Sunny's spirit mirrors that nature, making him uniquely capable of channeling foreign concepts and adapting to various forms of power. This adaptability is deeply tied to the art of Shadow Dance, particularly its evolving steps.[159]
He has developed the ability not only to sense the essence and battle style of his enemies, but also to perceive their Will — its impact and affinity. This skill was honed through deep insight and experience, rather than innate talent alone.[159]
Despite his growing power, Sunny struggles with the danger of losing his sense of self, especially in the absence of his True Name. Without it, fully embracing foreign concepts or forms risks his identity dissolving completely, a price that grows heavier the more powerful he becomes. Thus, his Will is both a strength and a liability — a weapon finely tuned to kill, but vulnerable to self-erasure if overextended.[159]
In Chapter 3105, upon inheriting Shadow Weave, Sunny's innate affinity with Will deepened, particularly in bringing death upon living beings, reflecting his nature as the Sovereign of Death and the fact that Death had been created by Shadow.
Nature
- Main article: Death Will
Sunny's Will is imbued with the power of death. Because of this nature, he would be especially deadly when clashing with someone or something whose Will was imbued with the power of life, reflecting the idea that for every force, there is a power that is antithetical to it. In the conceptual battles among beings of higher Ranks, it is not only the magnitude of one's power that matters, but also the nature of that power, and that the same principle applies to Will.[160]
The nature of Sunny's Will in relation to his abilities, especially Shadow Dance, which allows him to mimic the Attributes and channel the spirit of other beings. If he were to master all of its steps, he could potentially turn himself into a flawless copy of any living being, including the innate nature of their will. In that case, he would not merely be antithetical to life but antithetical to everything, echoing the nature attributed to Shadow God.[160]
Weaponized Will
Sunny had taken the first steps during his battle with Anvil[161][162][163], drawing inspiration from the King of Swords, and in the time since, he had grown more adept at channeling his Will.[163]
However, a true Supreme Art demanded more — it required his Will to become a direct force, expressed through his body with no dilution. The battle with the Millipede Queen revealed a vital insight:[163]
- Will lost strength when passed through intermediaries.[163]
- Slayer's arrow, though crafted by Sunny and powered by both their Wills, dealt only modest damage because it had traveled too far from its source.[163]
- Will was most potent when transmitted directly — through bare hands, a held sword, or any medium intimately connected to the user.[163]
Miscellaneous
- He learned to cook for himself after he purchased his own house.[99] He had improved his culinary skills which enabled him to cook food for his friends.[112][164]
- Sunny was taught fundamental cooking skills by Teacher Julius which had a hint of Bastion's tradition. It was influenced later by the Immortal Flame clan's flavor through Nephis, Sleepers of the Dark City's improvised habits, and the local tradition of the Chained Isles. His unique culinary skills resulted from a combination of influences.[165]
- His memory had always been good, and he noticed that his ability to instantly memorize things was somewhat unnatural among the people who were very smart and educated.[166]
- He was not a novice at creating maps due to his credentials as an academic explorer.[167]
- He has a deviant ability to partition his mind and multitask which he also uses to control his shadows. It was boosted further by the [Blessing of Mind], an enchantment of Graceless Dusk when he uses this Memory.[168]
- He had developed intuition about Weaver, Spell, and fate after learning about them.[127]
- Sunny's Shadow Step and Shadow Manifestation made him more mobile and elusive.[169]
- Scouting
- As a scout, learned the basics of the necessary skills from Effie and the Dark City, as well as his own travels. He developed these skills further in the wilderness of East Antarctica. Powerful Nightmare Creatures, like powerful Awakened, had strange abilities, so the scouts had to learn strange rules and tricks to remain unseen by them. For example, Sunny learned to keep dangerous creatures on the periphery of his vision because many creatures could feel a gaze directed at them and to keep his mind empty and carefully choose his words and thoughts because other creatures could feel if someone was thinking about them, or hear if someone spoke their names aloud.[170]
- Craftmanship
- In Chapter 1255, Sunny mentioned that he studied a bit of blacksmithing on the network back when Clan Valor prevented him from visiting Dream Realm. This is to improve manifesting shadows into a weapon.
Sunny avoided external specialists due to his fear of revealing his secrets, so he worked alone as a blacksmith, jeweler, tanner, tailor, and carpenter.[171]
He learned the basics of craftsmanship a long time ago when he lost access to the Nightmare Spell and had to survive alone in the Dream Realm for three years. Sunny's ability to craft weaves of essence strings made other forms of craftsmanship accessible. He also had a golden touch due to consuming Weaver's phalanx. As a Transcendent, Sunny had unrivaled dexterity, physical coordination, precision, superior senses, and mental acumen. He believed he would not lose to the forgemasters of Clan Valor in terms of craftsmanship quality.[171]
The Memories Sunny makes are not very potent but are perfectly suited for their wielder.[84]
- In Chapter 1255, Sunny mentioned that he studied a bit of blacksmithing on the network back when Clan Valor prevented him from visiting Dream Realm. This is to improve manifesting shadows into a weapon.
- Sunny possesses the ability to read dead languages of the Dream Realm, including the original runic language used by the Spell.[172]

A needle made out of polished iron was found on the third level of Ebony Tower. It had assumed a faint golden shine due to traces of divine blood absorbed by it. Also the skeins of diamond string.[175][176] It was just a random needle that the Demon of Fate found in the Ebony Tower and made use of to sew a new arm to their body, and its magical properties came from being washed in the daemon's blood. Now it did possess magical properties and just like Sunny's fingers, it was capable of interacting with the ephemeral strings that constituted spellweaves.[177] |
Owned (Turned into a memory)[153] |
The obsidian knife seemed to have been cut from a single piece of black stone, with its blade sharpened and polished. It was a little bit crude, almost primitive. The knife did not turn into a Memory. It remained material and tangible. It also didn't appear to have a spellweave. It was a magical item. Beneath the surface of the knife, was brilliant radiance, as though the knife was filled to the brim with soul essence. Inside the radiance was a single String of Fate folding on itself endlessly, with its two ends connected to create a perfect, neverending circle.[179] |

| Given to Kai[182] | |
Sunny managed to make the amulet into a Memory. The Spell transformed the amulet's enchantment from runic to a weave which shows how ingenious Weaver's creation was. However, the resulting pattern turned out to be unstable. The amulet destroyed itself perhaps because of the alien nature of the amulet's magic, or its name is unknown to Sunny.[184] |

The needle of a Corrupted Devil, a creature vaguely humanoid in shape, bone-white with countless rows of needles bristling from its back. He requested the said needle from the first army using contribution points.[189] Studying the intricate tapestry of ethereal strings within two Memories, Midnight Shard, and Morgan's Warbow, Sunny aims to recreate an Ascended enchantment by disassembling its structure and modifying one element. He also aims to create a functional Memory from scratch, but the last step is more challenging due to the need for refined materials like the Corrupted Devil needle for powerful memories, as he planned to use Transcendent soul shards.[191] Using Graceless Dusk, he was able to crack the case and turn the devil's needle into a memory. The increased mental capacity and faster rate of regenerating essence were extremely useful when applied to weaving.[168] |
Destroyed[192](Turned into a memory)[193] |
A large and opulent bed, carved from pale polished wood with elegant engravings decorated on the columns that supported the silk canopy. It looked like something from a palace.[194] This bed was the same one Sunny had slept on in the ruined cathedral of the Dark City, a lifetime ago. He brought it back with the help of the Marvelous Mimic after being away from civilization for three years.[194] |

Background
Sunny surrendered himself to the police station as a carrier of the Nightmare Spell. He lives in the outskirts before he started showing symptoms. He had no family to speak of and spent most of his time scrounging for food instead of going to school. His mom named him Sunless due to the fact he was born during a solar eclipse, which everyone finds strange. But he made an argument that back in the outskirts, not everyone even gets a name.[1] In the past, he was rarely addressed by name. People mostly called him things like "boy", "punk", "brat" or "hey, you!".[22]
Later he was seen wearing a clean police-issued tracksuit before going to the Academy.[55] Everyone at the Academy thought that he was weak, grew up without any education in the outskirts, and had no training. More than that, he was apparently either insane or incredibly stupid. His temper was terrible. But that was all a façade to cover up his flaw.[195] He is the second-to-last place in the Academy rankings, right above Cassie's.[196]
Theme Song
Trivia
- His parents' makeshift resting place was just two lines carved into an old tree since he was too poor to afford even the cheapest slot in the remembrance facility.[197]
- "[Your shadow grows stronger]" was what the Spell whispers to Sunny after he killed humans or creatures.[198][199]
- The Spell seems to always call him "treacherous" as a way to praise him.[64][200][201]
- Not long before Sunny was born, a Rank 5 Gate opened, which left a whole continent uninhabitable.[202]
- Sunny's birth was unusual, considering it happened during a solar eclipse and winter solstice.[203]
- He told Cassie about his First Nightmare when she felt sorry for being useless.[204]
- Sunny was seven when his mother died.[205][206]
- In Chapter 171, Sunny mentioned that besides his family, there are only two people he cared about in the world: Nephis and Cassie. But the way he felt toward Nephis is almost like a second flaw.
- The Spell's voice seemed excited whenever Sunny consumes things related to Weaver.[207][208]
- There are eight times that his True Name was ever said out loud:
- During his time alone in the ruins:
- He lived in the upper part of a ruined cathedral guarded by a powerful Nightmare Creature.[218]
- He developed a hobby of uncovering fragments of long-lost history and piecing them together.[219]
- He managed to survive three whole months in the ruins by hiding in the shadows and hunting carefully chosen prey at night.[23][220]
- He carved something beneath the lines that marked the days he had spent living in the ruined cathedral. There were two runes left on the wall: One meaning sun and the other meaning loss.[221]
- He opened up to Nephis about his family, especially his sister when he asked her about her goals.[222]
- He had gained ten Memories to feed his Shadow from the Memory market. And even managed to purchase a tier-six Ascended armor for the laughable sum of seven soul shards.[223]
- He first established Brilliant Emporium in Forgotten Shore.[224]
- He wants to open a store but he doesn't have enough memories yet.[225]
- Sunny's intuition was more than a mere manifestation of his subconscious. It turned out to be correct too many times, especially since he consumed the drop of ichor.[226]
- Everyone's role in Nephis' cohort was clear and easy to understand. Except for him, the role he played was entirely unclear.[227]
- People seemed to consider him a member of Nephis' cohort, but Sunny always insisted that he was not. He was thought to be a competent fighter, but actually, no one had really seen him fight. Most people just knew him for his tendency to keep to himself, ridiculous bragging, and carefree attitude. They simultaneously respected him for being Changing Star's scout and considered him mostly harmless.[227]
- He stayed in Forgotten Shore for a year and two weeks.[25]
- His life's goal is to become stronger, as strong and fast as he possibly could, to not fall behind Nephis.[228][229]
- He had been assigned the role of an advanced scout in the Sanctuary of Noctis.[44]
- In exchange for his reports about the things he noticed during his expeditions and the movements of Nightmare Creatures across the Chained Isles, he was all but free from other tasks, only occasionally having to do a small chore or stand watch during the darkest hours of the night.[44]
- He had to only spend around four hours in the Dream Realm before he could use the gateway again.[230]
- He had sworn off alcohol after his experiences on the Forgotten Shore, but he wasn't against making some money from it.[230] But he became a Master, he was unable to get drunk unless he wanted to. His body was going to treat alcohol as a weak poison and resist it.[231]
- He had used the enchantment of Weaver's Mask to see the Strings of Fate only once to save himself from being destroyed by the Crushing together with Twisted Rock Island.[232]
- Among the many strings of fate tightly wrapped around his body, two shone the brightest: one was made of pure white flame and the other made out of beautiful golden light.[233]
- To avoid being starved to death during his fall into the Sky Below he decided to eat the raw meat of the mimic, the idea which even his shadows seemed disgusted. As an Awakened his digestive system was much stronger than that of mundane humans and there was Blood Weave.[234]
- He told both Kai and Effie about his [Fated] attribute to explain why he had gone for a month.[235]
- According to him, his new favorite memory is the Covetous Coffer.[236]
- He never lost sleep over any of the humans that had died by his hand, except for Harper. He admitted that he enjoyed killing some of them a little.[237][238]
- He guessed that one of the reasons Changing Star had chosen to impart her family battle style to him was because she had recognized that the two of them were similar, both of them had seen and known the truth of the world.[238]
- He considered Mordret to be a perfect companion, because he only appeared once every few days for a short while, helped him with advice, and then disappeared without a trace, not asking for anything in return.[239]
- According to Mordret, he smelled the stench of a Dreamspawn on him, which is due to being connected to Nephis.[240]
- There were very few people in the two worlds who knew the secret of his Flaw:
- He had learned that his soul had a fearsome defense system against those who would try to possess it. The silent shadows that dwelled in his Soul Sea were not there just for decoration.[212][243]
- One of Sunny's wishes is to be taller and that was granted when he challenged his Second Nightmare though the body given by the Spell to him was not that of a human.
- According to Noctis, his name, Sunless, is a fitting and worthy name for a shadow.[244]
- The pale friend of Noctis mentioned in the description of Covetous Coffer was Sunny all along.[245][183]
- After he killed Nightmare (Black Steed), he kind of stumbled on one of the most crucial secrets about his own Aspect. He can gain much more fragments from destroying true shadow creatures.[246]
- He told Noctis about the Nightmare Spell and who he and his friends were but the latter did not believe him.[247]
- After he told his secrets to Cassie, Kai, and Effie he felt so disgusted and itchy. The secrets namely:[241]
- His flaw is that he can't lie.
- His possession of a true name (except his True Name) and why he hides it.
- His aspect rank is Divine, he has more than one Shadow core, and his aspect legacy is already unlocked.
- He had inherited a daemon lineage.
- He was Lord Mongrel.
- Sunny's True Name has the power to have absolute control over him.[151]
- Sunny rated the worst pain he ever experienced:[58]
- First: Catching a glimpse of fate which he only survived by accident.
- Second: Attaining a daemon's lineage.
- Third: Forming a new core.
- In the process of attaining a devil core inside the second nightmare, since he was in the body of a demon, not only his soul went through a transformation but also his body.[58]
- He did not know much about astronomy but due to being born during a solar eclipse, he knew a thing or two about eclipses.[248]
- Reports he had written:
- "Exploration Report on the Forgotten Shore, by: Awakened Sunless"[249]
- "The Exploration Report on Chained Isles by Ascended Sunless"[67]
- "The Exploration Report on the Tomb of Ariel", written by Nobody. The research paper was anonymously published by Sunny.[15]
- The Exploration Report on Everything, by: Nobody.[16]
- He called Cassie by her nickname again after Nephis was back in the waking world.[250]
- He dived into Nephis' dream with the help of Nightmare.[251] In that dream he told her he missed her but then questioned her about leaving him behind.[252]
- He showed off his improved cooking skill to Nephis by letting her try his ramen, which no one ever tried.[253]
- When he made coffee for himself, Nephis, and Cassie, he dumped 2 spoons of sugar into his cup. He also knows the coffee preference of Nephis and Cassie.[254]
- He only liked the waking world better than the Dream Realm because it was safer and had nice things, like delicious food, comfortable furniture, and network dramas and Rain.[231]
- He doesn't like honey due to its origin mentioned by Cassie. Apparently, Sunny has his limits for his food and something that was disgorge from an insect is a no no.[255] In Chapter 2353, Sunny finds honey terrifying and vile—especially when Nephis pours it on the pancakes he made—yet despite his horror at tainting innocent pancakes, he's willing to fill the entire Ivory Tower with honey and even replace the lake's water with it, simply because Nephis likes it.
- He brought Nephis to the outskirts to visit his parent's grave.[256]
- He agreed to go to Antarctica to search for his true strength.[118]
- His own dossier in the government database was rather short and mostly consisted of question marks.[120]
- He confirmed the following rumors about him to his subordinates for Antarctica Campaign.[77]
- Killed four hundred Awakened abominations and hunted down a Fallen Devil as a Sleeper.
- A distinguished explorer and researcher whose published works are well-known in academic circles.
- Came from the Forgotten Shore, where he lived in the Dark City completely alone and went slightly mad.
- Cooking always made him feel calmer.[257]
- His eyes, which were capable of peering through any shadow, were blind in true darkness.[258]
- He has spent the majority of his life alone. He had gained some good friends after being infected by the Spell but he thinks that people like Effie, Kai, and even Nephis and Cassie would have abandoned him if he had been weak and useless.[122]
- He still recalled some of the terrifying nightmares he had been tormented to by his shadowy steed. He seems to have gained an exceptionally high tolerance to pain and fear along the way, without even realizing it.[259]
- When Cassie surrendered his secret to Nephis on the Forgotten Shore, he thought that it was the darkest moment of his life.[124]
- If Cassie had not made that choice, he would have stayed behind a Sleeper and had no way of knowing if he would have survived the same journey as Changing Star had. If not for his return, Rain would have been dead. He would not have prevented the Nightmare Creature from destroying her school. Life is unpredictable, and oracles like Cassie can only see glimpses of it, powerless to change the outcome. Life is unpredictable, and no one can predict the twists and turns of fate.[124]
- He received a strange trauma after touching the Nightmare Gate[260][261] but was all gone in Chapter 1025
- He became the envoy of House Valor in East Antarctica.[54]
- If it were not for the fact that his Titan kills were somewhat murky, he would be going around demanding people to call him "Titan Slayer".[262]
- Nephis mentioned that Sunny attracts the stern stoic type, vaguely sinister, or completely insane kinds of people.[263]
- He may branch out Brilliant Emporium and open it in Bastion. He was also thinking of opening a restaurant.[264]
- Sunny hated losing to a member of a Great Clan and deeply resented them, as being defeated by someone he disdained was a bitter pill to swallow.[265]
- In Chapter 1179, Sunny cooked the dish taught by Obel for Cassie and Nephis.
- In Chapter 1186, Sunny revealed he was Mongrel and all his Shadows (Saint, Nightmare and Raveneous Fiend) to Morgan.
- In Chapter 1275, he admitted that he was so much fond of Nephis.
- In Chapter 1286, Sunny ranked the enemies he faced in Antarctica, the Terror of LO49 was placed second to Winter Beast. Goliath, who had literally killed him, did not leave as harrowing of an impression.
- The Spell seemed to like Sunny's speech before killing the Azure Serpent that it included his speech word by word into the Memory description of Crown of Twilight.[266]
- According to Ananke, Sunny is beloved by fate, but Sunny thinks he is more like cursed by it.[267]
- He can run across water as if it were land by combining the [Feather of Truth] trait of his Shell with the [Royal Promise] enchantment of the Crown of Twilight.[268]
- Sunny had always wanted to die of old age.[269]
- One of the reasons Sunny had chosen to break fate was because Shadow Bond's harm became real after he realized his feelings to Nephis[40], forming an impregnable wall between them, making the idea of a future together seem beyond reach.[270] As long as Shadow Bond exists, any relationship between them is impossible. Only by becoming free of her could Sunny be with her.[271]
- In Chapter 1660, Cassie discovered that Sunny is the Lord of Shadows.
- Sunny reveals that a war for humanity's throne is imminent. He plans to make sure that the crown is handed to Changing Star, as he despises the three ghouls, Anvil, Ki Song, and maybe even that third one. He doesn't trust them to keep him alive.[272]
- In Chapter 1668, Sunny had brought Nephis to the jungle inside the hollow bone of a giant skeleton after being apart for four years.
- Sunny found the thrill and charm of exploring forgotten ruins to be the closest thing to a hobby.[273]
- In Chapter 1693, he became official Memory Purveyor of the Fire Keepers. An independent specialist hired to handle sales and acquisitions of sorcerous equipment.
- Nephis explained that the Memory Purveyor position was an intentionally flimsy misdirection that no one would buy, considering the circumstances. People will assume that she was infatuated with Sunny and has arranged for him to have a position with the Fire Keepers because she was her paramour.[47]
- In Chapter 1694, Sunny thought his appearance as a Saint was a curse. Jet, who had once told Sunny he could become a flower boy now came to bite him.
- On the day the King of Swords defended SQSC, he met Nephis as a Saint. That day was memorable for Sunny because it was the moment he learned that his existence had been erased from the hearts of everyone who knew him.[274]
- His first meeting with Nephis is still fresh in his memory. Back on the bridge in front of the academy, he had been attracted by how aloof and detached from the world Nephis was. He also felt a subtle sense of kinship because they were the only sleepers who wore standard-issue police tracksuits.[274]
- In Chapter 1701, Sunny had underestimated the potential consequences of playing Neph's secret darling.
- Sunny only learned cursive after returning from the Forgotten Shore and gaining a position as a research assistant.[48]
- In Chapter 1706, Sunny became the Memory Purveyor of the Fire Keepers.
- Sunny carried the lineage of Weaver but possessed an Aspect tied to Shadow God.[275]
- Sunny celebrated his twenty-second birthday in the Hollow Mountains.[276]
- Sunny dumped two years' worth of memories into Cassie's head in the span of a few hours.[277]
- In Chapter 1804, Sunny was knighted as Knight of Valor without his knowledge.
- Sunny suppressed his presence using Nebulous Mantle.[278]
- During the beach date with Nephi, he gifted her a beautiful soul shard. It was perfectly round and polished, glimmering with beautiful nacre color. It came from a stealthy Nightmare Creature that looked like a massive boulder, a monstrous abalone of Awakened rank.[85]
- In Chapter 1844, Sunny invited Aiko and Rain to join his Shadow Clan.
- Sunny had a soft spot for rhinos.[279]
- Sunny's Aspect originated from the Shadow God.[280]
- In Chapter 1974, Sunny revealed to Rain that he was the Lord of Shadows and that he could live multiple lives simultaneously. He had been pretending to be many things: a sellsword Saint hired by the King of Swords, the Knight Commander of the Great Clan Valor, and the mysterious Memory Purveyor of Ivory Island, the citadel of Changing Star. Additionally, he was a master chef based in Bastion. He also revealed to Rain that he was also her long-lost brother before she was adopted.
- The reason he is 26 years old in Chapter 1592 despite being born twenty-five years ago and five years older than Rain despite having been only four years before her. The Tomb of Ariel is a bit confusing due to having a River of Time inside.[18]
- He is aware of his naming sense which is overly literal and lacks nuance or creativity.[281]
- In Chapter 2245, Sunny finally understood the path to Supremacy same time as Nephis, he must die on his own terms to achieve it. (Refer to Sunny's Process to Natural Supremacy)
- According to Kim in Chapter 2275, his waffles are to die for. In Chapter 1694, Nephis also seemed to enjoy the waffles Sunny made.
- After becoming Supreme, his mind had grown more powerful as he climbed high in the Path of Ascension that he was tempted to summon Weaver's Mask and activate [Where is my eye?].[282]
- According to him, he was born in a rundown public hospital in the outskirts of NQSC. It was a normal delivery.[283]
- Julius played chess with Sunny before and his take on chess is quite dismissive and negative. Initially intrigued, he quickly lost interest when he realized that being good at chess required mastering patterns and calculations. To him, that made the game feel more like a tedious chore than an enjoyable challenge. He finds such intellectual rigor boring and unnecessary, especially since his real life already involves a lot of calculating. Sunny prefers games that are more chaotic, unpredictable, or allow for mischief—like checkers or backgammon, especially because he enjoys the possibility of cheating with dice in the latter.[284]
- In Chapter 2352, when Kai asked Sunny who he hates more between wraiths or bird, he said the bird.
- Sunny's alternative to his True Name—the anchor to his identity—was a list of names representing the people most important to him. These names were: Nephis, Cassie, Effie, Kai, Rain, Jet, Noctis, Ananke, Aiko, Julius, Beth, Kim, Luster, Quentin, Dorn, Belle, Samara, Obel. Reciting these names would help ground him and remind him of who he truly was if he ever lost himself to the Puppeteer's mind control.[285]
- In Chapter 2408, Sunny nearly lost himself in the form and mind of a Stone Saint and also nearly killing Kai in the process.
- In Chapter 2580, Sunny crushed the Millipede Queens' stronghold in the Burned Forest and conquers the final nest, effectively claiming it as his second citadel.
- In Chapter 2599, Sunny revealed to Jet that he was the only weaver in existence and more than that, quite the master of Weaver's sorcery.
- Sunny's favorite pastime was bewildering people with honest retellings of his numerous misadventures.[286]
- Sunny believed he could succeed in the Fifth Nightmare because, unlike Asterion, he was a master of maintaining his sense of self intact, a skill rooted in his very nature as a shadow, which was formless and shapeless, and reinforced through relentless training to never forget himself via Shadow Dance, to the point that even the mists of the Hollow Mountains had failed to erode him into nothingness; this mastery of self-preservation meant that, despite the Fifth Nightmare's forced and dangerous transformation of consciousness required for Apotheosis, Sunny possessed a rare resilience against losing his humanity and identity, allowing him to endure the trial without being destroyed by it.[287]
- It was mentioned in Chapter 2980 that after losing the Nightmare Spell, Sunny manually filled in the missing information himself. Although Cassie assisted him, their descriptions were still unable to match the level of insight provided by the Spell.
- In Chapter 3023-3024, Sunny is teaching Ananke of Weaving.
- Sunny had considered French toast the ultimate breakfast food, declaring it the "undisputed king of breakfast foods". He had also claimed that the secret to making flawless French toast was using slightly stale bread.[288]
