Nightwalker was the enigmatic Awakened of the First Generation who is the founder of a great clan, the "House of Night".[3]

Appearance

Transcendent

A young-looking man with strange, nebulous silver eyes, beautiful features, and dark, flawless skin. He wears a luxurious, flowing tunic and has long hair tied with a piece of metal wire. Despite his youthful appearance — he looks barely old enough to be called an adult. Nightwalker possesses a pure, radiant light of a Transcendent soul core, without any darkness inside.[4]

He looked a couple of decades younger than his son, Naeve[4] but is actually old enough to be Sunny's grandfather.[2]

Nightwalker is described as a youthful immortal who was "claimed" by the Eternal City through the separation of his shadow from his soul which prevented him from leaving. When reunited with his shadow physically, he reacts with a "strange, mournful expression", seemingly unable to understand the "bitter feeling of sorrow and longing" it evokes. Sunny also sensed a "deep, indescribable longing" from the shadow, with both clearly desiring to be "mended and become whole again", even if they do not consciously realize it.[5]

Sunny explained that restoring the shadow will allow Nightwalker to leave but will also result in him becoming mortal again. Nightwalker agreed and Sunny prepared sew Nightwalker and his shadow back together, warning it may hurt but assuring he will not die.[5]

Supreme

In Chapter 3144, in the gathering of demigods, Nightwalker is described as a fetching man who looks younger than the other Supremes, despite actually being older than all of them. He has strange, nebulous silver eyes that seem to gleam with distant starlight, flawless dark skin, and a dashing smile.

Personality

Nightwalker and his crew were eccentric.[6]

He was described as not a very social person, in general. He rarely spoke about his experiences, including the Eternal City, keeping most details to himself.[7]

He is reclusive and antisocial individual who used to avoid everyone — his closest allies included — as much as possible, and even called himself someone who hates people, adding that he had not avoided people enough.[8] He was not very fond of people, but enjoy peace and quiet.[9]

Aspect, Abilities & Flaw

Show/Hide Aspect Abilities

Received in Ability Chapter Mentioned Status Aspect Abilities
First Awakening
(After First Nightmare)
Dormant (Sleeper) 2700 Active His Dormant Ability is described as "a form of divination", which manifests as a directional intuition. He experiences a feeling that tells him where to go to get to where he wants to go, or where to find what he is searching for. This Ability guides him toward his objective but does not provide warnings about dangerous paths or places to avoid, which is implied to be a significant flaw.[10]
Awakening
(After first escape from Dream Realm)
Awakened (Awakened) 2700 Active His Awakened Ability is characterized as a "magical containment suit", though there is no suit. Instead, his body becomes isolated from the environment, making him impervious to all hazards such as cold, heat, radiation, contaminants, pressure, and so on, for as long as he has essence. During this state, his body becomes self-sufficient, producing its own oxygen and nutrients. This Ability allows him to survive in extreme conditions and go pretty much anywhere without dying.[10]
Ascension
(After Second Nightmare)
Ascended (Master) 2700 Active His Ascended Ability is the power to fold space. He explained that he can fold it to make something long short or unfold it to make something short long. This spatial manipulation has an infinite number of potential applications, including traversal — taking one step and walking a hundred meters — and combat uses such as folding the space that an enemy occupies, or a body part of theirs.[10]
Transcendance
(After Third Nightmare)

Nightwalker refers to his Transcendent form as the "Starbeast". It is described as a strange beast made of starlight, with the abilities to be both tangible and intangible, or shift seamlessly between the two, similar to how light can act as both particle and wave. He imagines this form to resemble mythical cosmic creatures that could graze on cosmic radiation and gravity waves while drifting from star to star through the endless dark void.[10]

Upon attaining Supremacy, his already fearsome Transcendent form had grown numerous times greater.[11]

General Abilities

Nightwalker's Aspect Abilities had been enhanced across the board, with a couple standing out.[11]

  • His already fearsome Transcendent form, that of a cosmic starbeast, had grown numerous times greater, as if the giant creature had previously been merely a whelp.[11]
  • He had also become capable of manipulating space at a greater scale and, more importantly, of twisting it permanently. He could create a road that allowed people to traverse a week's worth of distance in just a day or two, with some effort, but permanently.[11]

Domain

His natural Domain consisted of land, rather than people or living beings. He could expand his Domain by laying claim to land that had not been claimed before. As a Supreme, he could also use the Components of the Night Garden better, allowing the living ship to serve as a connection between various cities of humanity even if it ceased to be part of the Longing Domain.[11]

Background

Reveal

Nightwalker was sent to the Eternal City on his first winter solstice, along with other Sleepers. He was the only one who survived, managing to escape aboard the Night Garden, which had been drifting nearby.[7]

Nightwalker entered the lighthouse and survived. He received the lineage of Storm God, which eventually allowed him to escape the Eternal City. Before fleeing, he collected a bit of that starlight into a special Memory (Star Lantern), and through it, the founding members of the House of Night were also able to receive the lineage — though a few of them perished in the process.[7]

One of Nightwalker's reasons for wanting to return to the Eternal City was to restore the bloodline of Storm God. Another reason was the state of the Night Garden. The great ship was already in disrepair, with many of its functions deteriorating or broken after drifting in the Stormsea for thousands of years before Nightwalker discovered it. He believed it had been built at the wharf of the Eternal City, and therefore could only be repaired there. Additionally, Nightwalker was drawn by the mystery of the Eternal City's depths, since he had only explored its outer fringes — the piers, the wharf, and the lighthouse — before escaping. He was enticed by the possibility of treasures left behind by immortals.[12]

Although Nightwalker possessed a map, he did not return easily. Bloodwave explained that Nightwalker had only escaped the Stormsea the first time by miracle. The Stormsea was described as being as vast as the rest of the explored Dream Realm, with waters as different from each other as Godgrave is from the lawn in front of Bastion. Humans could survive in some regions, but traveling freely across it was impossible, and even those who avoided the most dangerous waters often died. The Eternal City itself was said to be hidden in the heart of the Stormsea, making the journey perilous. In Nightwalker's time, even the most powerful individuals were only Masters, and reaching it was nearly impossible.[12]

Despite the dangers, Nightwalker never abandoned his plan to return. Naeve explained that some believed he had died while exploring the Dream Realm, while others thought he perished attempting to conquer the Third Nightmare. The truth, however, was that Nightwalker left on a voyage to return to the Eternal City and was never heard from again.[12]

Although Naeve stated that no one knew what happened to Nightwalker, Sunny recalled that Mordret had implied otherwise. Mordret suggested that Asterion forcefully took the lineage of Storm God from Nightwalker, which led Sunny to believe that the Dreamspawn might have played a role in the founder's disappearance, though the details remained unclear.[12]

Nightwalker chose to bring Asterion and his followers instead of the champions of the House of Night. Asterion seemed like a good candidate for Nightwalker's plan to deal with immortals by affecting their minds. He revealed that he was killed by Asterion upon their arrival in the Eternal City, once Asterion no longer needed him.[13]
Nightwalker traveled to the Eternal City accompanied by Asterion and his followers, not alone as others believed. He brought Asterion because he needed someone capable of performing mental attacks against immortals, but Asterion eventually betrayed him, attempting to absorb the lineage of Storm God and killing him when Nightwalker refused to surrender. Nightwalker explained that he died by Asterions hand and later came back to life in this cursed city, fully aware that he was destined to die here thousands of times more.[8]
Nightwalker explained that he had spent decades in the Eternal City constantly dying, escaping, and descending into madness while being hunted by overwhelming immortal abominations, often losing and regaining his senses to the point that time lost all meaning. He remembered starting out as an Ascended and eventually discovering a Seed of Nightmare, repeatedly challenging it, dying, and being resurrected by the city until he finally conquered it and became a Transcendent, allowing him to fight the immortals more effectively. For the last ten years, he had been fighting Great Nightmare Creatures all day, every day simply to kill time, accumulating an immense amount of combat experience in complete isolation. Nightwalker remarked that he was not very fond of people, enjoying the peace and quiet despite the city being populated only by Nightmare Creatures. He stated that once someone died in the Eternal City, they became its prisoner forever because the Eternal City was not a paradise but a prison created by the Demon of Repose to trap the beings she hated for eternity.[9]

  • In Chapter 3034, Kai, Effie, Jet, Morgan, Seishan, and Nightwalker were among the strongest champions of humanity who volunteered to challenge the Fourth Nightmare. They returned to the site of the Battle of the Black Skull. Before entering the Nightmare Gate, each reflected on personal reasons for taking the risk. Nightwalker humorously claimed that he sought to impress his granddaughter.
  • In Chapter 3148, Nightwalker took control of the Night Garden and turned it into a wandering stronghold that kept the different parts of the Human Domain connected.
  • In Chapter 3207, Nightwalker created the Barrier as a defensive zone surrounding the inner city, designed to protect its districts by weakening or killing Nightmare Creatures that attempted to pass through its twisted, deadly labyrinth.
