“ I don’t expect you to forgive me. This sin, too, will be mine to bear. But, please, if you can... find it in your heart to understand. If things were different, I would have gladly faced that monster to let you escape. But my life... does not belong to me alone. There is an unencompassable duty I am sworn to fulfill. Until it’s done, I cannot allow myself to die. ” ― Auro to Sunny,
Chapter 13 Moment of Truth
Auro of the Nine, referred to by Sunny, as the Hero. He was an Awakened and also one of Sunny's slavers in his First Nightmare.[4]
Appearance
He was a young soldier wearing a simple leather cuirass, armed with a spear and short sword. To Sunny, he looked dignified, noble, and pretty. He could be considered a male lead in a historical drama.[2]
Personality
“ You people… Look at you! Planning to kill me and still insisting on having a good excuse. How very convenient! I really hate hypocrites like you the most. Why don't you be honest for once? Don't give me that crap... just say it! I'm going to kill you because it's easy. I'm going to kill you because I want to survive. ” ― Sunny to the Hero,
Chapter 13 Moment of Truth
Although his actions seem noble, Sunny realized that he had a twisted sense of justice and is very dishonest with his words. Despite being no threat to him, the Hero planned to kill Sunny under the false justification that the quick death would be better than being killed by the Mountain King.[5]
Background
Auro had been alive during the twilight of the Golden Age, not long before the Doom War started. He was a skilled warrior from a militant empire which worshipped the War God and had awakened at a young age, a feat that seemed impressive without the Spell's assistance. However, Auro of the Nine was not a simple person, but because of his name, the Spell remembered him.[6]
History
Sunny's performance in the First Nightmare was considered glorious, indicating a significant deviation from the natural course of events. If Sunny had not taken the place of the temple slave, the slave would have likely died, while the young swordsman would have survived. Auro would have gladly faced the Mountain King to let Sunny escape if his life belonged to him alone, but he couldn't allow himself to die because of an unencompassable duty.[6]
Trivia
- During Sunny's First Nightmare, Auro was only an Awakened swordsman without an unsealed Aspect, indicating that the Nine were not extraordinarily powerful at that time.[3]
- He was the red-haired boy in one of the truth visions Sunny received inside Ariel's Game.[7]
- He possessed [Fated] attribute like all of the Nine.[8][9]
- He was the red-haired boy summoned by the oracle whose task is so harrowing even the huntress, one of the Nine was shaken.[10] (Refer to the Vision)
