“ This blade slowly drives its wielder mad ”

― Enchantment Description of [Cursed],
Chapter 869 Sin of Solace

Show/Hide spoilers

According to the Memory description of Sin of Solace, the blade is a whisper of Ariel, the Demon of Dread.[2]

Runes

Manifestation

There was a slender figure standing above him, with a mocking smile on his face.

It was a young man with black hair, alabaster skin, and a lithe build. He was wearing a simple tunic of beautiful black silk and a pair of dainty silk shoes, looking like a porcelain doll.

His eyes were like two pools of cold darkness.

The young man… was Sunny.

Or rather, it was the Sin of Solace.

In the Third Nightmare, the spirit of the cursed sword did not look vague and blurry. It looked complete and real.[3]

The apparition was more composed and full of malice than Sunny, hiding a boundless ocean of madness behind its amused gaze. Sunny was initially convinced that one of Mordret's Reflections had found him within the mist, but the tone of the apparition was too familiar, leading him to realize that this copy was the manifestation of the Sin of Solace.[4]

The reason the spirit of the Sin of Solace was suddenly much more clear, frighteningly real, and even able to appear without summoning the cursed sword was because of single rune was roughly carved into the wood he was floating on at the start of the Third Nightmare.

Curse

The less stable Sunny's mental state, the more substantial the presence of the blade's apparition.[4]

The spirit of the cursed sword turned a broken piece of Sunny's mind against him. Therefore, Sunny was actually conversing with a splintered piece of his mind rather than being haunted by a cursed sword.[4]

Sunny's intact sanity was partly due to his mental resilience and resistance to mind attacks. Most humans would have been turned into raving lunatics by the jade jian, but Sunny found the presence of the Sin of Solace frustrating.[5]

Evidences

Sunny can lie when he talks to Sin of Solace, and he also don't have to answer all of its questions which is only possible when he is talking to himself.[4]

History

Sunny initially heard whispers when holding the Sin of Solace,[6] but later heard its voice[7] and a vague illusory figure following him[8]. Inside the Third Nightmare, Sunny did not have the Sin of Solace summoned, as the sword still rested within his soul, but the apparition looked complete and real beside him.[3][4]

The sword wraith, Sin of Solace, appears independent but it is still a part of Sunny's mind. He had previously understood the nature of the apparition in Antarctica and how to deal with it. However, upon entering the Tomb of Ariel, the nature of the apparition changed without explanation. Sunny questions the influence of the Tomb, which was built by the Demon of Dread, and whether there is something more sinister at play.[9]

Sunny's previous versions who had entered the Estuary had learned the secrets written by the Demon of Dread and put them in the depths of a mystical lake that was hidden behind a tunnel full of Corruption. Sunny summoned the Sin of Solace, which had the [Hideous Truth] enchantment. Even though he was not entirely mad, the paradoxical nature of the Sin of Solace had long ago reached completion which meant he was long overdue to receive revelations as a reward for reaching the pinnacle of madness.[10]

The runes that had to do with the Unknown, the progenitor of the daemons, and these writings did not threaten to corrupt one's soul.[10]

After the Key of the Estuary had mysteriously destroyed itself. The apparition, sinister sword wraith, appeared cold and unhappy to be free from the confines of his long-held seal. Despite his coldness, the apparition looked more sinister than before, and stared at Sunny with a mix of contempt, resentment, and pity.[11]

Saint augmented with six shadows destroyed the memory sword, Sin of Solace, and consumed its fragments but the wrath was a long part of Sunny's mind, the cause was the sword, but the source was Sunny.[1]

Sunny used the enchantment of Stifled Scream, [Word of Power], to stop the wrath from corrupting him. Then, the wrath was gone as if he never existed along with the forbidden knowledge of the void and all memories of previous cycles. Preventing the Mad Prince from being born again.[1]

A thin thread tied around his neck, the same thread which sewn shut the mouths of the Voiceless Prelates, a band of Corrupted Demons led by a Devil named the Defiled Herald. He had slain them in Antarctica, receiving a Memory called the Stifled Scream, a charm he used to augment Saint. However, the charm had a second enchantment, the [Word of Power], which could not be used by Saint. Sunny couldn't remain silent long enough to accumulate enough potency, making the Word of Power more tyrannical. Knowing he might face the Mad Prince, Sunny summoned the Stifled Scream while bidding farewell to Cassie.[1]

The Stifled Scream, accumulating power from the Great River which was a river of time. He entered the Estuary wearing it, where time did not exist, making it impossible to differentiate between moments and eternity.[1]

Trivia

  • In the spellweave of Key of Estuary, there is a particular pattern of essence strings describing the rune, Sin of Solace. The name of the cursed sword wraith is intricately woven into the enchantment of the Estuary Key.[12]
From what Sunny knew in the Third Nightmare, the Mad Prince was the only one of the Defiled champions who had traveled into the far reaches of the future. Sunny had inherited the Estuary Key and Sin of Solace from the Mad Prince; the sword wraith's vivid appearance could be due to their shared past.[13]

The Sin of Solace might have been by his side all the way to becoming Defiled and then spending unknown time haunting the Great River and had been passed down to the younger version of its corrupted master through some bizarre anomaly or dark scheme.[13]

The apparition had let it slip that he knew the Mad Prince by interfering with the dream where the abomination's vestige showed up. This raises questions about the origins of the Sin of Solace and the Mad Prince's connection.[13]
  • Inside the Wind Flower island, the apparition had been aware that they are in a loop.[14]
  • In Chapter 1438, it was mentioned that Cassie can't see Sin of Solace's apparition. However, in Chapter 1553, it was revealed that she can actually perceive the wrath through Sunny.
  • The Sin of Solace was the reason Sunny had become the Mad Prince and was also the reason why the Mad Prince had managed to preserve a shred of lucidity. Keeping him forever torn between two mutually exclusive states.[15]
  • The Estuary Key was a Sixth Tier Supreme Memory suppressing the Sin of Solace which was a Fifth Tier Transcendent Memory.[16]
  • Cassie regained her Memories on Aletheia's Island due to being exposed to the Sin of Solace through Sunny, and the restriction placed on the sword wraith protected her as well.[16]
