Shadow God was the first god Sunny knew of in his First Nightmare.[3] He was not very prominent that they called him a half-forgotten weakling god.[3][2]
Shadow Realm
- Main article: Shadow Realm
The Shadow Realm is directly connected to the Shadow God, as it is not merely a part of his essence but his actual corpse. Unlike mortals, gods do not possess separate bodies, souls, or Soul Seas; these aspects are one and the same. Therefore, the Shadow Realm exists within what remains of the Shadow God himself.[4]
Shadow God was described as being inseparable from his domain, since the Shadow God was the Shadow Realm, and the Shadow Realm was Shadow God. It was mentioned that he was the last of the gods to fall when the Nightmare Spell rose from Weaver's corpse to devour the gods, indicating his survival longer than the others during that catastrophe.[5]
Nature
The Shadow God was the one who created Death, and that his power is connected to the conceptual conflict between opposing forces such as Life and Death, where their collision resulted in annihilation. Sunny's own Will is described as imbued with the power of death, making him especially deadly when confronting beings whose Will carries the power of life, illustrating the idea that the nature of one's power can matter more than its magnitude in battles among higher beings. Reflecting on this principle, Sunny concluded that Shadow God's true nature lies in his ability to become anything, which means he can become antithetical to everything. Because of this, Shadow God ultimately held the power to end everything, which explains why even the other gods were wary of him. Despite this destructive potential, Shadow God is also referred to as the God of Peace, creating a paradoxical aspect of his nature.[6]
Background
It was mentioned in the runes describing Soul Serpent that the Shadow God was the last of the gods to be destroyed and he was the one who created death. Due to this many resented the Shadow God but in the end, they all died.[7]
"[When the end came, Shadow was the last of the gods to be destroyed. Many have resented him for creating death, but in the end, death embraced all.]"
According to the runes describing [Mark of Death], Death had been created as a weapon.[8]
"You bear a mark of Death, as just like Death, you were created to be a weapon."
According to the description of Shadow God's drop of ichor, the Shadow God was compelled to create Death due to a terrible enemy the gods had faced long before the daemons.[9]
[Before, there was only boundless, eternal void. From that dark abyss, the -unknown- were born. Just like chaos itself, they were endless and everlasting, vast and forever changing. But then came desire, and with it came direction. From it, the gods were born.
When gods appeared, the void was not eternal anymore.
When gods appeared, the darkness was not endless anymore.
When gods appeared, the chaos was not orderless anymore.
The gods appeared, and brought with them war. This drop of divine blood was spilled by Shadow on one of the battlefields of that war, before the void was bound.]
It was mentioned in the description of Shadow Lantern that the War God did not like Shadow God at all. In many ways, they are the opposite of each other.[10]
["Death is just the shadow of life," said the Goddess of Life. "And peace is just the failure of war. Have you ever been something that had not been stolen, made empty, and vile? Have you ever done something that was not futile and hollow? Can you even exist without being cast by another? Look at how weak you are, how small you are. Am I supposed to be frightened of a small shadow?"
Made pale and feeble by the radiance of day, Shadow laughed and rose from the ground. As he did, his figure swallowed the land, devoured the heavens, and blotted out the light of the sun. Soon, there was nothing left around them but darkness. And from that darkness, a hiss came, making Life tremble:
"Life is just the prelude to death, and war is just the key to open its gates. Everything you cherish, everything you nurture, everything that starts with you will one day be mine, be welcomed by me, swallowed by me, and find peace within me. This is the mercy of Shadow. Hollow… futile... you might have come first, my sister, but when your cruelty ends… I will be all that remains…"]
[When Shadow made death, he has become death. Everything that Shadow swallowed died, and everything that died was swallowed by Shadow. Death was an absolute law, and thus, that which was everchanging was everchanging no more. Time was an absolute law, and thus, that which was everlasting was everlasting no more. Space was an absolute law, and thus, that which was endless was endless no more. Wielding time, space, and death, the gods defeated and bound their enemies.
However, there were those who defied even absolute laws. One of these beings broke free of the Shadow Realm after being swallowed by it, and in doing so, splintered several small fragments of it. This is one of the fragments.][11]
Shadow God was mentioned, in Weaver's scroll that contained one of the fragments of Weaver's Lineage, as the one who embraced Rime after her death, offered her solace, and declared, "I am Death, and no one escapes Death".[12]
[Weaver was the first one to be born.
And Rime was the first one to die.
Broken and shattered, she succumbed to harrowing wounds and found herself in the embrace of Shadow.
And there, in the darkness, Shadow offered her solace.
"Rest well now, child," whispered the darkness. "Your torment is over. Stay here with me, unhurt and at peace."
But Rime refused.
"Your world is too dark, it is too quiet and hollow. Out there are vast oceans, boundless heavens, and flowers that bloom in the light. I want to swim in the oceans and conquer the heavens... I want to explore all of existence and gather all flowers, to bask in the beauty and enjoy pleasant scents."
"The flowers are bristling with thorns," pleaded the darkness. "The oceans are cold, and the heavens are empty. Your life was short and brutal — and now, it has come to an end. Stay with me, child. Do not refuse my embrace."
But Rime laughed.
"The thorns are what make flowers beautiful. Cold is what makes warmth desirable. An end paves the way for a new beginning. Even if I can find peace in your arms, Shadow, I want to leave. I want to live, no matter how much it might hurt."
The voice of the darkness grew cold then, turning into a terrible hiss, "But you are mine now, child. You belong to the shadows. I am Death, and no one escapes Death... not even a foolish spirit like you."
It was then that darkness became her chain, and solace became her collar. Peace became a prison.
Time flowed, and the world slowly changed. Only silence remained the same.
Shadow refused to let Rime go...
So, in the end, she shattered the walls of his realm and escaped into the light.
That was how the Demon of Repose, who had been the first one to die, became the first one to escape Death as well.][12]
History
The Imperials, who were protected by the War God, destroyed the last temple of the Shadow God.[3]
[You have offered yourself as a sacrifice to the gods.]
[The gods are dead, and can not hear you.] [Your soul bears the mark of divinity.] [You are a temple slave.] [Shadow God stirs in his eternal slumber.] [He sends a blessing from beyond the grave.] [Child of Shadows, receive your blessing!] — Chapter 14 Child of Shadows |
The Shadow God sent his blessings to Sunless when the latter's blood fell on the altar and absorbed it.
Trivia
- According to the memory of the original child of shadows, there was not a lot of difference between the slaves and priests of Shadow God. It was as though the servants of the Shadow God did not pursue opulence and status. In fact, many of the priests bore the same markings as the slaves, suggesting that they themselves had belonged to the temple once.[13]
- It was common knowledge that serpent markings are associated to Shadow God.[3][13][14]
- According to Noctis, servants of Heart and Shadow were able to build a heart worthy of a Shadow Demon from scratch.[15]
- Shadow God's other names sounded humble and rather inconspicuous when compared to something like the other names of Storm God. But things that preferred to remain unseen and unheard were often the most dangerous. Also, War God did not like Shadow God at all. In many ways, they are the opposite of each other.[10]
- Sunny's Aspect originated from the Shadow God.[16]
- According to Eurys, the Shadow God cursed individuals like him, Azarax, Kanakht, and a few others. They were banished from death, unable to die.[4]
- Shadow God mercilessly cursed both the armies of the rebellious daemons and the warriors of the Divine Host, dooming them to an eternity of endless war in the Nightmare Desert.[17]
- Shadow God is associated with death, and Eurys used a weapon described as the blade of Death to kill the avatar of the Goddess of Life. The conceptual opposition between Life and Death, describing them as antithetical forces whose collision results in annihilation. Sunny's own Will is described as being imbued with the power of death, making him especially deadly against those whose Will carries the power of life. This further reflects on the nature of Shadow God, suggesting that he could become anything, which meant he held the power to end everything, and this was why even the other gods had been wary of him. It also states that Shadow God created Death. Despite this destructive association, the Shadow God was called the God of Peace. It was also unknown how did he lose to Demon of Repose.[18]
