Tatal was a human girl who belonged to the tribe that settled near the Shadow's cave. She was the great-granddaughter of the tribe's aging hunter, who brought her to the Shadow as a human sacrifice in an attempt to secure the tribe's protection.[3][1]

Appearance

Debut

Tatal was described as a young girl with small stature. She wore crude garments.[4]

Personality

Debut

Tatal was cheerful, friendly, innocent, and remarkably fearless. Despite knowing that the Shadow was a fearsome being dwelling within the cave, she willingly returned to his shelter without showing significant fear. She was also compassionate and concerned for others. After being sent back to her village, Tatal voluntarily returned because she believed the Shadow would be lonely. She was also confident and straightforward. When the Shadow questioned why she cared about him, she simply answered that they were friends, apparently considering their friendship to be an established fact despite the Shadow having never agreed to it.[4]

History

Fifth Nightmare

Summary

The Shadow refused to accept Tatal as a sacrifice and instead spoke with her, learning that her grandfather had brought her to the cave because he believed the Shadow would protect the tribe after his death. The Shadow subsequently returned Tatal to the village and instructed her to warn the tribesmen against offering human sacrifices in the future.[1]

Tatal returned to the Shadow's cave on her own, carrying an oil lamp because she believed he would be lonely without her. Despite his confusion and attempts to understand her strange reasoning, Tatal confidently declared that they were friends, leaving the Shadow utterly flabbergasted and unable to convince her otherwise.[4]

Tatal repeatedly visited the Shadow as a carefree child, showing him her doll, talking about berries, and playfully challenging him to count to ten thousand, gradually leaving a mark of her humanity on him. Years later, she returned as an Awakened hunter after killing an Ascended Beast, cave bear, proudly revealing that she was preparing its hide as a bridal gift for her fiancé, which shocked the Shadow.[5]

Tatal's tribe went to great lengths to prepare for her grand wedding, honoring her as a powerful young Awakened and the last descendant of their legendary hunter. The elders had searched far and wide for a worthy husband and arranged her marriage to a promising young man from the powerful Grey Wolf Tribe, while Tatal herself appeared happy with the union.[6] Tatal married the young man from the Grey Wolf tribe and later visited the Shadow's cave in high spirits, proudly praising her new husband and sharing hawthorn wine with the Shadow. She happily told him that the marriage was wonderful and that hunting the bear had been worth it, before returning to her tribe.[7]

Tatal grew from a young wife into a mother and the new shaman of her tribe, taking on greater responsibilities while helping her people develop and survive hardships. She endured the death of her daughter and the burden of executing a tribesman, but eventually found the strength to face life one day at a time and continued leading her tribe with courage and resilience.[8]

Tatal, now an Ascended Shaper and the leader of her tribe, faced the Basilisk's rampage after it devastated neighboring tribes and severely wounded her husband. Refusing to abandon her people or ask the Shadow to kill for her, she confronted the Transcendent Basilisk alone and eventually slew it with her copper blade, proving her strength and resolve.[9]

Tatal survived the battle with the Basilisk but was left gravely wounded, and the Shadow carried her unconscious body back to the village. Despite having the Shadow's help available, she had chosen to face the Devil alone, believing that relying on a benevolent god could ultimately make mortals dependent and rob them of their own accomplishments and joy.[10]

Tatal recovered from her wounds and led the Shadow Tribe through hardship, helping it rebuild, prosper, and gain renown while raising a family and becoming a respected leader. As her power and reputation grew, she eventually became the first Transcendent of her tribe and transformed into a magnificent fox, earning her people's awe and celebration.[11]

Tatal's tribe flourished under her guidance, and she built a loving family whose descendants spread across many lands, but she gradually endured the deaths of her husband and children as she continued to age. In her final years, Tatal accepted her approaching death peacefully, comforted by her loved ones and the Shadow, and she died after thanking him for being her lifelong friend.[2]

Trivia

  • Tatal had a beloved doll named Snuggle. It was an ugly, crudely made doll with coarse fabric, a rough dress, black bead eyes, and a permanent frown. She played with Snuggle roughly, leaving her covered in tears, clumsy stitches, and scars, making her look more like a battle-hardened warrior than a child's doll.[5]
  • She loved berries, especially raspberries, with mulberries as her second favorite. She also liked wild strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, and elderberries.[5]
  • She could count to ten, or twenty when she wasn't wearing shoes—which made absolutely no sense to the Shadow.[5]
  • She loved teasing the Shadow. After he claimed he could count as high as he wanted, she repeatedly demanded that he prove it by counting to ten thousand.[5]
  • She considered the Shadow her friend despite him being an ancient, terrifying mass of darkness.[5]
  • She unintentionally changed the Shadow. Her simple, carefree humanity gradually left a lasting mark on him and helped prevent him from completely losing his sense of self.[5]
