Flaw is a unique curse that was placed on the Awakened as the price for gaining mystical power.[1] Even if the flaw is reversed, it is still a curse. The new curse is likely to be far worse than the old one.[2]
Note: An Awakened (Nightmare Spell Carriers) only gains a Flaw after passing their First Nightmare and receiving their Aspect.[3] But this does not apply to those Awakened naturally, as they need to discover it on their own.[4]
Characteristics
Flaws are never random; they are deeply connected to the individuals cursed by them and are tied to something fundamental about those people. A Flaw might directly oppose the core of a person’s identity, distort something they hold dear in a hideous way, or be unrelated to their personality but instead stem from the nature of their power or their fate. Despite their complex and personal nature, it is possible to deduce a Flaw if one knows the person well enough.[4]
Nature
“ Imperfection is also an absolute law, just like death... and so, nothing is flawless. Even the world itself is flawed. Even the gods, who were born flawless, are not perfect anymore. And so, we humans are flawed, too.
But that is a good thing. Flawless things are perfect, and so, they can never improve. They can never grow. They can only remain still and unchanging, which is no different from being dead. Being flawed is the essence of life, my Lord and Lady. It is also the essence of growth. After all, what is life if not a constant struggle to grow and improve?” ― Ananke to Sunny and Nephis,
Chapter 1307 Before the Nightmare Spell
Flaws, while often seen as curses bestowed by the Nightmare Spell to balance the extraordinary powers it grants, are not inherently bad. In truth, Flaws do not originate from the Spell at all—it merely helps Awakened discover their Flaws, much like it helps them unseal their Aspects. Flaws are rooted in a deeper principle: the law of imperfection, a fundamental law of existence created by the gods as a weapon in their war against the Void. This law symbolizes life's inherent struggle and potential for growth, as perfect, unchanging things are stagnant and lifeless. As Ananke once explained, albeit cruel, Flaws are meant to foster growth through hardship, reminding those burdened by them that struggle is essential to improvement.[4]
The Flaw is an essential part of an individual's identity and strength, so vital that no one can achieve Transcendence without it. The Nightmare Spell aids every Awakened in attaining their Flaw, not just because growth stems from adversity but because an Aspect and a Flaw are intrinsically connected. It may even be impossible to unseal one's Aspect without first discovering one's Flaw.[5]
Flaws present an insurmountable challenge, but, like a mountain, there are ways to work around them instead of simply trying to overcome them.[5]
Impact
From the perspective of the gods, Flaws are tools for balance and growth rather than curses. However, for those who suffer their effects, Flaws can feel overwhelmingly cruel and burdensome, often indistinguishable from a curse. Sunny's own experiences reinforced this duality. He had encountered Flaws of varying severity, including his own and those of Nephis and Cassie, which were terrible but not the worst. Others, like Caster's Flaw, required him to forsake his Aspect powers to survive—a price tied to his pride and sense of duty, which ultimately led to his death. Dorn suffered from a Flaw that caused his body to grow uncontrollably, a condition that would eventually kill him under its own weight. There were others, like Jet, whose struggles, though less detailed, were equally harrowing.[4]
