The strings of fate were what made a person who they are and connected them to all living beings and the world.[1] They are the threads that transfixed everything in existence, connecting every living being, object, thought, concept, dream and nightmare, stretching infinitely into past, present, and future.[2]
Description
...an endless, beautiful eternity of twisting threads. Those threads transfixed everything in existence, connecting every living being and every object, every thought and every concept, every dream and every nightmare, stretching infinitely into every direction, as well as into the past, the present, and the future.
These were the Strings of Fate. — Chapter 430 Tapestry of Fate |
The strings were like the threads of light the Spell was woven of, but it connected everything including all of the universe as it existed, was existing, and was expected to continue to exist.[3]
When Sunny first witness the strings of fate through Weaver's enchantment [Where is my eye?], he still remembered every thread and knot of the great tapestry that was branded onto his mind, their endless beautiful eternity of twisting threads.[3][2]
Later, however, he discovered that the tapestry had been torn apart. The past remained intact, but the present was in chaos, and the future had been erased entirely. This unraveling was the direct result of Sunny's Fateless state: by cutting away such a heavily Fated nexus, the strings connected to him lost their anchor, cascading into collapse and plunging fate into chaos.[2]
Nature
As one went through life, they collected strings and tethers that connected them to others. Everyone's fates were intertwined, and everyone was tied down and bound by those numerous connections, some of them fleeting, some deep and precious.[1]
Removing one's strings of fate, erases one's existence from the world and a fateless being could not earn a True Name because True Names are tied to one's fate.[1]
History
The Thieving Bird had stolen Sunny's fate.[4] Resulted to his banishment from the Nightmare Spell, his [Fated] attribute and True Name gone. Nephis could no longer command him. However, everything about Sunny's Aspect remained intact, including his Innate Ability, Shadow Bond.[1]
Shadow Bond had not disappeared, but its condition could not be fulfilled. The bond formed between him and Nephis was broken, and no one else could enslave him again. As a fateless being could not earn a True Name, Sunny was truly and utterly free.[1]
In Chapter 2589, Sunny activated the enchantment to gather intelligence where Weaver's lineage is in the Night Garden. This revealed the condition of the great tapestry of fate.
As a Supreme Titan with Mind Weave when Sunny activated the enchantment what he saw was not the infinite, orderly tapestry of fate he remembered. Instead, the threads were cut, tangled, and ravaged, with the past remaining intact but the present in shambles — and the future entirely gone. The fate itself, thought to be immutable, had been destroyed. The cause was clear to him: his own defiance, and the rebellion he and Cassie had committed against destiny, had torn the tapestry apart and erased the future.[2]
Weight of Fate
The Strings of Fate were woven by Weaver to create the Nightmare Spell, and Sunny, as the inheritor of Weaver’s lineage, could in theory weave them as well. When Sunny touched a thread of golden light, it felt like both a physical object and something immovable, its weight equal to that of the world itself. For him, moving a single String of Fate was as impossible as an ant moving a mountain, something only a Divine being could attempt. Even then, not all Divine beings could twist the Strings of Fate, and those who did still could not escape them, showing that their influence was limited.[5]
The tapestry of fate itself had been torn and savaged, fundamentally altered — an act for which Sunny, Cassie, Weaver, and the Thieving Bird all bore some share of responsibility. Previously, the future had flowed toward a predestined end, but with the unraveling of fate, it became undecided and malleable. Countless possible futures now existed, some more beneficial and others more terrible than what had originally been fated. There was no way to know what the original future was meant to be, or what final shape the new future would settle into.[5]
The unraveling left the future uncertain and free, containing limitless possibilities. Sunny and his companions carried the responsibility of guiding it toward something more hopeful rather than harrowing. Without the Strings of Fate pulling them like puppets in a predestined play, their choices would shape the outcome. Even so, the tapestry of fate might one day repair itself, restoring some order, but it would never be the same again.[5]
Trivia
- It was said that the Nightmare Spell is woven out of Strings of Fate.[6][7][8][9]
- When Sunny used the active enchantment of Weaver's Mask, he was able to see the strings of fate.[3]
- Cassie used to be able to see the future and that ability has been in disarray since her Third Nightmare. All Awakened with high affinity to fate are suffering a reduction in their ability to discern the future. She has been trying to find the cause for the past four years without success, so the message she seems to have sent herself made her think that he might be of help.[10]
