Doom War is the name of the war between the gods and daemons.[1]
Background
It was unknown what reason that pushed the daemons to rise against the gods, but it happened after Demon of Desire escaped her chains. The youngest among them, the Demon of Destiny, called upon his siblings to wage war against the heavens. Only five answered his call and only the Demon of Fate refused. The daemons were blamed for everything terrible that happened. But things weren't going well long before their rebellion.[1]
Most of the gods had grown distant, and people quarreled with each other. Humans fought against humans, and against other noble creatures. Followers of War burned the temples of Shadow, and their empire spread, consuming many weaker realms.[1]
The six Demons assembled vast armies and led them against the gods, but they were not immediately defeated. The war was furious and merciless, with many realms becoming battlefields and devoured by flames. The war continued to grow fiercer, with lesser gods joining their cause. The Demons recruited more allies, including mortal champions who had suffered the tyranny of the Empire, ancient creatures that had been banished into the darkest corners of the Underworld, those with deep grudges against the divine, including the harrowing Nephilim.[1]
The war turned every place into a battlefield, with forests burning, fields turning to deserts, and rivers drying up. A passing blow from the fighting deities could destroy entire cities, and countless humans were displaced or lost their lives. That was when people started calling it the Doom War, believing that it would become the end of everything. This led to the creation of the Nightmare Spell which was gifted to mortals by Weaver.[1]
Incongruity
There was an unadorned sarcophagus in the heart of the Estuary that remained even thousands of years after the daemons and gods were no more. The one who was buried at the heart of Ariel's Tomb was Oblivion. [2]
Six daemons rebelled against the heavens, with the seventh, Weaver, refusing. Because of this, the Demon of Fate was despised and hunted by both the six daemons and six gods. There were six daemons participated in the war and pursued Weaver. However, the Demon of Oblivion was buried in the heart of the Tomb of Ariel.[3]
A fragment of Weaver's lineage was discovered near Oblivion's grave. It was as though Weaver lost a part of their soul at the grave of Oblivion, for some reason. The connection between Weaver and Oblivion is unclear, and it is speculated that it may be related to the unusual incongruity in the number of daemons that participated in the Doom War.[4]
Trivia
- The Doom War was not a Realm War. It had involved the entire population of all realms, not just one, and its outcome decided the fate of existence itself. The battles fought between the Demon Legion and the Divine Host were therefore far greater in scale and scope, and far more terrifying, than any battle Sunny had ever witnessed.[5]
- Hell of Ariel became the site where the Demon Legion and the Divine Host waged war against each other because the realm was spacious enough to accommodate large-scale conflict, and neither side wanted to risk turning additional realms into hells.[6]
