Kai (also known as Night) is the lead vocalist of Nightingale before he became a sleeper and was stuck in the Forgotten Shore.[20][3] He is also one of the important characters in Shadow Slave.

Appearance

Debut - Dream Realm

A young man wearing light lamellar armor, with luscious dark auburn hair and mesmerizing green eyes. His well-fitted armor was made out of burnished brown leather, with deep blue embroidered garments beneath. Kai was tall, slender, and incredibly handsome. His face was small, perfectly shaped, and beautiful, with high cheekbones and flawless ivory skin. His green eyes were nothing short of electric, and his lips were soft and full.[21]

He seemed to possess that special type of warm charm that made some people almost irresistibly attractive. According to Sunny, he wouldn't be surprised to find out that droves of girls simply fell to Kai's feet every time he happened to casually walk by. Perhaps a few guys, too.[21]

He looked like a genuinely nice person, without the smallest trace of arrogance or entitlement on his pretty face. There were playful sparks of humor hiding deep within his eyes, and one could be absolutely sure that when Kai smiled, cute dimples would appear on his cheeks. According to Sunny, he was the most beautiful person he had ever seen, even compared to other Awakened. Kai looked like one of those screen idols that people loved to obsess over, only somehow even more attractive in person.[21]

During the Beach Episode, Kai was described as tall and shaped like a young god, with lean muscles rolling under his flawless skin and a svelte figure that begged to be sculpted into a marble masterpiece. Sunny could swear that even sunlight was attracted to him, illuminating the charming archer in just a way to make him look as gorgeous as possible.[22]

After the cohort's three-month journey, he was still beautiful and elegant but most of his charm was hidden under layers of dirt, dust, and dried blood. The stylish armor he had worn was long gone, replaced by an unflattering garment that seemed to be woven out of bluish seaweed.[23]

On Sunny's birthday, he was wearing a new stylish armor and a leather jacket with fur on its collar.[24]


Awakened - Waking World

The Awakening made Kai's slender figure even more graceful, his perfect face even more handsome, and his electric green eyes even more mesmerizing. His luscious dark auburn hair was neatly cut and styled, his clothes were simple and exquisitely fashionable, and the several pieces of jewelry he wore somehow managed to enhance every one of those features by bringing it just the right amount of attention.[14]

According to Sunny, no amount of masks and sunglasses could hide his glamorous aura. It only made him stand out even more.[25]

When Sunny invited Kai to dinner at his house, Rain saw him as a tall and ridiculously attractive young man with a polite and friendly smile. His hair was auburn and absolutely gorgeous, and his electric green eyes were nothing short of stunning. He was dressed in simple, but exquisitely stylish clothes, holding fashionable sunglasses and a facemask in one of his hands.[4]

Awakened - Second Nightmare

A leaper whose body and disfigured face was covered with dirty bandages.[26] His body used to be a captain in the Sun Legion, who led a hundred brave warriors into battle for Lord Sevirax and the Ivory City.[27]

After Noctis agreed to heal him, he became a strange human with skin that resembled polished bark, wearing a fitting dark garment made of soft silk, his disfigured face hidden behind a wooden mask and drowning in the shadow of a deep hood.[28]

After the events of Temple of the Chalice, his wooden mask was charred and blackened by the heat of divine flames.[29]


Ascended - Waking World

Kai had always been ridiculously charming, but after becoming a Master, his looks assumed an almost hypnotizing quality. It was easy to get distracted if one stared at him for too long.

Kai was wearing more stylish attire than Sunny for the Valor clan ball. He was radiating so much grace and elegance that the interior of their moving vehicle seemed almost electrified.[30]

Kai's attractiveness reached borderline criminal levels after becoming a Master. Kai's natural charm grew more captivating. His reserved military valiance became more subdued and arresting. His green eyes, still electric, now had a quiet, almost melancholic depth, making one desire to comfort and console the young man. These captivating eyes were nothing short of compelling.[31]

Chapter 2317 Worm of Doubt

Kai wore a beautiful armor made from ivory scales and burnished bronze, with auburn hair and mesmerizing green eyes, showcasing his tantalizing beauty. He had been unreasonably attractive but as a Saint, his beauty was almost blinding. Sunny felt a strange impulse to look away but couldn't.[32]

Only Cassie and Beastmaster could challenge Kai in terms of appearance, and Sunny couldn't compete.[32]

Supreme

In Chapter 3144, in the gathering of demigods, Kai had become a man so handsome that his beauty could become a deadly weapon. He has auburn hair and green eyes with sparks glinting in them. He greets everyone with a radiant smile whose devastating force even demigods cannot resist. His presence is light and effervescent, while also carrying a hint of melancholy. His voice is pleasant and impossible to ignore, making one want to listen to it forever.

Personality

Volume 1-5

Kai is a good and very honest guy.[33][34] He is also a very careful, alert, and collected person.[35] His strange ability to sense lies made him less prone to having a lot of questions.[36]

Kai prided himself on overcoming things like stage fright and social anxiety, as well as getting through many unpalatable situations with grace and elegance, not to mention managing to survive in the Dark City for three long years without losing his humanity.[37]

He wanted to join Sunny and Effie to challenge the Second Nightmare because he wanted to get stronger to never turn a blind eye to injustice.[38]

When Nephis returned, Sunny noticed that all this time, Kai must have been blaming himself for leaving Nephis behind. He was truly too decent of a person for this vile world, infected by a misguided sense of nobility. Knowing that he had escaped the hell of the Forgotten Shore because of someone else's sacrifice pressed down upon him a lot.[39]

Volume 8

Kai knew there would be no salvation for many, as weakness was a sin. He once considered himself weak and unworthy to be with his friends. He who had experienced the most terrible hells was not ashamed of his strength. He believed that if he was stronger, more people would survive, and his friends would return from battle with fewer scars. Despite being close to the pinnacle of human achievement, no one had thought that a gentle and shy kid overly interested in music and fashion would make it this far. Still, he believes there were ways to gain greater strength.[40]

Volume 9

Kai is a fearful person, deeply affected by various fears throughout his life—fear of failure, shame, loneliness, rejection, death, agony, loss, tragedy, and most notably, regret. These fears have stifled him, shaping much of his personality and actions. However, over time, Kai has learned to ignore his fears, cultivating a façade of bravery that causes others to mistake him for someone innately brave. Despite this, he recognizes that his bravery is not genuine and contrasts himself with his companions, who seem naturally fearless, even to the point of being recklessly so, like Effie.[41]

Chapter 2317 Worm of Doubt

Kai is the charming Saint who is often too nice for his own good, plagued by insecurity and unsure of himself deep down. Although he has elevated himself step by step through places like the Forgotten Shore and the Tomb of Ariel, becoming the valiant Dragonslayer, his opinion of himself has never seemed to catch up to his accomplishments. He believes that he led his soldiers only to their deaths and that his role in major events was minimal, calling himself merely a tactical commander or someone who sold his rare Aspect Ability to survive behind the walls of the Bright Castle. In comparison to the exalted warriors around him—Nephis, Cassie, Sunny, Effie, and even Jet—Kai views himself as a far more mundane individual. Yet, Sunny sees clearly that Kai has always risen to the occasion for no other reason than his innate integrity and principles. He was not driven by an overwhelming obsession or inescapable fate, but rather by the simple desire to do what was right. Sunny tries to disabuse him of the preposterous notion that he is somehow less deserving, knowing that Sovereigns are arrogant by nature, and that someone who doubts himself cannot convince the world to submit.[42]

Although he initially had the luxury to live safely and comfortably, he chose to forsake that freedom to embrace responsibility and stand with his friends who lacked such freedom. He reflects that true virtue lies not merely in strength itself, but in how it is used—misusing strength is a greater sin than weakness. By consciously surrendering his personal freedom to answer the Call of Nightmare and support his companions, Kai embraces a purposeful life guided by duty rather than convenience. Despite the sacrifices, he does not regret giving up his freedom.[43]

Volume 12

Reveal

In Chapter 3016, Kai confirmed that he intended to challenge the Fourth Nightmare, stating that he had hesitated for a long time before ultimately making up his mind. Prior to reaching that decision, he had discussed the matter with Jet for an extended period. He also noted that his role as Steward of the West had become largely redundant, as Seishan and her sisters had the former Song Domain under control, leaving him with little to do in Ravenheart.[44]

Kai explained that his decision was influenced in part by Sunny's remarks during Ariel's Game and by his realization that Sunny and Nephis possessed an unusually skewed perception of power due to their exceptional strength. He argued that the Path of Ascension was not a straightforward progression, noting that most Awakened never became Masters, most Masters never became Saints, and almost no Saints ever became Supremes.[44]

According to Kai, individuals capable of becoming Supremes were exceedingly rare, and the pool of those qualified to attempt that advancement was nearly exhausted. He believed that, despite the modern world having already produced eight Supremes, only a handful of people remained with the potential to reach that rank. As one of those individuals, Kai considered it imperative to attempt the Fourth Nightmare and stated that he would not be able to live with himself if he wasted such scarce potential.[44]

Kai also cited personal motivations, explaining that he had experienced enough powerlessness in his life and wanted the strength to shape the world according to his ideals. Desiring to become someone capable of making the world listen, he ultimately resolved to challenge the Fourth Nightmare.[44]

His battle skills have improved tremendously since their time on Forgotten Shore. The months in the army of the Ivory City taught him a lot.[45] Kai was able to split the amulet of the Dread Lord into two from afar earning the admiration of Mordret for a split second.[46][47]

As a Transcendent-level archer, Kai was far from ordinary—his physical power and refined technique allowed him to string the Supreme-quality shadow bow Sunny had crafted with seeming ease, though it clearly required considerable effort.[48]

Kai possesses potential for Shaping due to his Aspect, which allows him to invoke exceptionally powerful True Names; however, he describes himself as having "negative talent" because mastering these Names is extremely difficult for him. He struggles to retain them in his mind and cannot even speak them in human form—only as a dragon, where the Names come more naturally. Despite years of effort, he has only managed to master a few.[49]

Chapter 375 Separate Paths

In the real world, Kai's favorite hobby was archery. It was not a real battle art but was more of a meditative ritual, an ancient practice known as kyudo. Its orderly nature, tranquil philosophy, and repetitive motions appealed to something deep inside him. The more stressed he was, the more he practiced. But he didn't know that one day he would be relying on his marksmanship to survive.[37]

Once awakened, with the help of his agency and fame, he was easily able to find a spot in Bastion, the most prosperous Citadel. Knowing that he would live a safe life, possibly never having to fight another nightmare creature. He felt reluctance and shame to which Sunny retorts that there is nothing wrong with living as a person should.[15]

  • Sunny always makes it a point that Kai's flaw is more of a superpower than a flaw.[33][50][51]
  • Kai was stuck in the Forgotten shore for two and a half years.[2]
  • He joined Nephis' Cohort after Nephis asked him to join her expedition.[52]
  • According to Nephis, Nightingale is the best and most famous idol group of the last decade. Triple Orpheus winners, one hundred consecutive weeks at the top of all charts, six diamond albums. And Night is the lead vocalist.[3]
  • Fans of Nightingale in the real world thought that Nightingale was on hiatus due to Gale's solo project but it is in fact because Kai, their lead vocalist was stuck in the Dream Realm.[3]
