“ In the dim light of dawn, the gates of the castle opened for the last time. A long procession of humans walked through them, leaving the ancient citadel that had sheltered them for so long. They walked under the swinging skulls, not paying them any attention. In the aftermath of all the strife, no one had bothered to remove the ghastly things from their chains. It was not like anyone could have forgotten the hundreds of lives lost in the struggle, and thousands of deaths before that, even if the skulls were removed. Five hundred people descended the hill and entered the Dark City. A few Nightmare Creatures tried to attack them, and were eviscerated before managing to do any harm. These five hundred humans were not a defenseless crowd. They were a battle-hardened army, one comprised of exceptionally powerful Sleepers… the most powerful Sleepers to ever be born from the human race, perhaps. ”

― Chapter 314 Leaving the Dark City

Events that led to establishment

Many months after the winter solstice, Sunny, Cassie, and Nephis arrived in the Dark City. They quickly learned about the Dark City and the Bright Castle Lord.[3][4] The city had a false notion of justice, created by Gunlaug. One can invoke the Right of Challenge, as long as a suitable reason is provided.[5] Nephis took advantage of this system to kill Andel, accusing him of stealing.[6] This was a cover-up for the real reason of establishing an opposing authority against Gunlaug. Although a false notion, the city was protected by law. Nephis was able to build up an army against Gunlaug, provided she did not publicly provoke him. Over time, Nephis took away his power, and people and which left Gunlaug the most vulnerable he had ever been.[7][8][9]

Still, Gunlaug was confident enough to be able to take care of Nephis through various means. Eventually, she was called to court for protecting Effie, who was accused of killing some hunters in the Dark City. When in reality, these hunters were killed by Sunny.[10] In her defense, Nephis evoke the Right of Challenge to Gunlaug.[11]

After Nephis challenged and killed Gunlaug, chaos ensued in the Dark City resulting in the death of almost two hundred people.[12][13] Nephis had her own faction, Kido and Gemma teamed up, and so did Tessai and Seishan.[13] Tessai and Seishan managed to defeat Gemma and Kido. Kido was killed but Gemma escaped along with some of his Hunters. They escaped to Nephis and joined her ranks.[14] Nephis and Tessai were set to fight but Seishen betrayed Tessai leading to a one-sided battle. Nephis then became the leader in the Dark City.[15]

“ Follow me, and I will lead you out of this hell. Follow me, and I will show you the path back to your homes. But make no mistake…The road ahead will be long and arduous. Not everyone will make it. The weak will die. The strong will die, too. And those who remain won't be the same. But there is one thing I can promise you…Follow me… and you will never be slaves...Slaves to your fear, slaves to your fate, slaves to the Nightmare Spell. Come with me, and whether you live or die, you will do so humans. Not cowering beasts. ”

― Nephis to the five hundred sleepers that survived in the Dark City,
Chapter 312 Invisible Chains

After some preparations, the remaining inhabitants burned down the castle and marched to the Crimson Spire in an all-out attack.[1]

Survivors

Around a hundred Sleepers, were all that remained of more than a thousand humans that had been surviving on the Forgotten Shore, and had survived the battle of the Crimson Spire. They were the strongest, bravest, and luckiest warriors of the Dreamer Army.[16]

Known Survivors:

In the waking world, all hundred of those who returned from the Forgotten Shore were marked as strategic assets.[17]

After the return from the Forgotten Shore, half of the members of the former Dreamer Army had decided to follow Cassie and became known as the Fire Keepers. Of the remaining half, most had chosen a different path, either remaining independent like Sunny and Aiko or joining various Legacy clans. All the surviving handmaidens, however, had followed Seishan back to Song.[18]

Trivia

  • During Sunny's exile after humanity's exodus to Dream Realm, he went back to Forgotten Shore and there he took a week to collect the remains of 400 sleepers who perished in the battle and the remains of Nightmare Creatures they had killed as a testament how of how fearsome the Dreamer Army was. He also carved runes that read:[19]

[Here lie those
Who extinguished the sun
Dreamers of the Dark City
Sleep well
Your nightmare is over.]
