Shadow Shell existed as a combination of Sunny's Dormant Ability, Shadow Control, his Ascended Ability, Shadow Manifestation, and his Aspect Legacy, Shadow Dance.[1]

Shadow Shell was a lesser version of a true Transformation Ability (a pseudo-transformation ability derived from the application of his abilities and Shadow Dance.). It was still an immensely powerful tool, and much more versatile than almost any such Ability could be.[2]

Note: Sunny's actual transformation ability as Transcendent had something to do with his shadow helpers whom he can transform into human form (Shadow Avatar), and he named this ability as Shadow Incarnation, same as his earlier application of his Aspect Ability to make himself in Tangible Shadow Form. However, as a Transcendent, he can make his shadow helpers have a human body.

Origin

The essence of his battle art, Shadow Dance, was shapelessness and formlessness.[1]

Sunny, having mastered the first three steps of Shadow Dance, used it to shadow enemies, copying their combat techniques, resulting in predicting their movements, the flow of their battle intent, and thoughts[1]

The first step enabled him to observe simpler battle styles, which he achieved by defeating Nephis in the Crimson Spire.[1]

The second step vastly elevated his comprehension of the fundamental principles that governed all battle techniques, enabling him to shadow more sophisticated styles and intuitively understand the more esoteric components of the advanced battle arts created by the Awakened. This breakthrough was achieved after collecting a vast library of techniques in the Dreamscape, culminating in his first duel with Morgan.[1]

The third step of Shadow Dance demands accepting the formless nature of shadows and letting go of one's true self, which can lead to losing it forever. Sunny made this breakthrough after being trapped in an endless procession of harrowing dreams by Nightmare and having his memories blocked. He used his True Name to pull dissipating pieces of his true self back together, advancing his Shadow Dance mastery without losing himself. This breakthrough improved his understanding of shadows' battle intent, combat intelligence, and ability to predict their thoughts.[1]

Sunny created Shadow Shell using his skills, Attributes, and Aspect Abilities. Shadow Dance was crucial for creating other creatures' shells, as it required a deep understanding of desired forms. However, Sunny was not shapeless like shadows, and despite training, his human body remained rigid, despite being malleable. His Aspect Legacy enabled him to construct shells from shadows.[1]

Forms

Sunny's mastery of Shadow Shell allowed him to transform into various creatures, such as serpents, leopards, and winged horrors. Although this transformation was purely physical, it did not grant him the mystical powers of the beings whose forms he used.[2]

Shadowspawn Devil

A fearsome creature almost three meters in height, with onyx black skin and bestial demonic face. Its mouth was full of sharp fangs and four long horns crowned its head, protruding from dark, coarse hair.[3]

The creature had four hands that ended with sharp claws and a long twisting tail. Its eyes were entirely black, with no irises and two vertical, furious pupils.[3]

Shadowspawn Terror

A towering, terrifying figure with six black horns rising from his head like a crown, glistening in the radiant sky. His form was bestial, with a long tail ending in an onyx spike whipping through the air. His knee joints were reversed, and his feet were massive, clawed, and scraped against ancient bone. He had four arms, all covered in an onyx carapace and ending in sharp claws. An eerie mask concealed his inhuman face, adding to his menacing presence.[4]

Shadowspawn Titan

The Shadowspawn form looked almost exactly like the Devil Sunny had been in the Second Nightmare — towering at three meters in height, encased in a fearsome black carapace of the Jade Mantle, and possessing four hands ready to tear and rend. The notable difference was a crown of seven horns on his head instead of four.[5]

Onyx Serpent

A mighty serpent clad in an onyx scale armor, with fangs as sharp as diamonds. He transformed the Shell hiding below his scales into an adamantine Mantle, an obsidian armor, light as a feather, and crafted not to restrict movement.[6]

In this shell was Sunny in his fragile incarnation.[6]

The river serpent was a monarch among beasts. Its long body was fast, mighty, and tenacious. It was incredibly fast and at home in the water.[7]

As a Supreme Titan

In Chapter 2608, Sunny summoned a torrent of shadows from the Shadow Lantern, which gave shape to the transformation. A gargantuan serpent forged from onyx and darkness. When he summoned it, the massive tenebrous shape roared beneath the sea, causing the water to ripple and boil. His Shell of the Onyx Serpent was so immense that it far surpassed the size of both Naeve and Bloodwave in their own Transcendent forms, casting a shadow so deep it felt darker than the lightless expanse of the abyssal depths.

Giant

A colossus built from shadows as tall as the ancient temple. The giant's body was a perfect replica of the Lord of Shadows, with a titanic torso and two immense arms. A layer of glossy onyx covered the dark colossus, encasing him in impregnable armor. The light of enchanted lanterns couldn't dispel the darkness hiding his face.[8]

Others

  • A monstrous butterfly with six chitinous legs made of shadows.[9]
  • An octopus-like abomination[10]
  • A giant leopard of decaying flesh[10]
  • A giant replica of himself borrowing the size of Devouring Beast[11]
  • An enormous wolf[12]

Improvements

When Sunny faced Revel and her true darkness, losing most of his powers and relying on his Shadows to prevail led to discovering a new facet of his Aspect that helped defeat Ki Song's daughter. Sunny believed that augmenting his Shadows and Memories could enhance his Shadow Dance and weaving skills.[13]

Sunny was eager to explore two avenues: Augmenting his Shadows and enhancing his control over Shadow Manifestation.[13]

His current Shells were a crude blend of emulation and improvisation, with a focus on human anatomy, material science, and basic physics. However, building a complex Shell required conscious effort from him. His ability to manipulate shadows' physical attributes, such as rigidity, elasticity, viscosity, and density, was relatively crude. He could make them rough or slippery, solid or fluid, dense or porous, but he couldn't make them resemble water or ice. This limited his ability to finely control the physical attributes of shadows.[13]

While augmenting Saint, Sunny sensed the structure and composition of her stonelike body with clarity, as if it were his own. This insight allowed him to improve his Shadow Manifestation and potentially build a superior Shell of a Stone Saint. He could also augment Fiend, Nightmare, and Marvelous Mimic, learning more about their bodies.[13]

Having Serpent, who could assume the forms of thousands of creatures whose silent shadows dwelled in his soul, Sunny had a vast library of all kinds of beings ready to be studied and fathomed by him, from the Mountain King to the abominations of Godgrave.[13]

Trivia

  • The first time Sunny used Shadow Shell was in the shape of Shadowspawn Devil.[3][14]
  • In Chapter 1516, Sunny had ravaged the Dread Lord as a ferocious sea serpent, a dreadful butterfly, a decaying leopard, and many more revolting shapes.
  • Sunny's repertoire of Shells was limited, as he did not possess a True Name anymore[15], making it extremely dangerous to assume the shapes of alien creatures so he only used a handful of Shells, which he perfected to a stellar degree.[16]
  • With no True Name, staying in the Shell for a long time was potentially dangerous. The Onyx Serpent form was one of the few he could assume without risking his identity. This might be due to his deep knowledge of the form or his kinship with serpentine creatures as an inheritor of Shadow God.[17]
  • Sunny could use the Soul Serpent's Serpentine Steel Ability to augment the fangs of his shell to fight. The Serpent's Soul Reaver Ability allowed it to absorb and transfer soul essence from all beings slain by it in Soul Weapon or Soul Beast forms.[17]
