Smile of Heaven is Nephis' mother.[6] She was famous for being the daughter of Immortal Flame[6] as well as the first among the few who received a True Name from her First Nightmare[5].

Appearance

As a young girl possibly eleven or twelve years old, she wore a frilly gown resembling a little princess, with a bright and radiant smile.[7] In Chapter 2155, Jest described her as an impossibly cute girl. She had a bright smile and adorable dimples on her chubby cheeks. (Refer to Jest's early memories)

In the Academy, Smile of Heaven was a bright and beautiful girl who had received a True Name in her First Nightmare. She was incredibly strong, with a subtle warmth that made people feel at ease.[8]

Personality

When she was young, she was a bossy little girl and seemed to be the ringleader of the group.[9]

In the Academy, her physical prowess, martial technique, combat intelligence, and willpower made her a natural leader among the Sleepers. Her personality was not serious enough to settle in this position, making her a favorite person.[8]

Aspect, Ability, & Flaw

Her Aspect was a mystery, but her extraordinary talent was evident.[8]

Her Transcendent Ability or Transformation Ability gives her a corporeal form that she describes as very beautiful, very magnificent, and way more majestic and impressive than her vessel, Snuggle. However, she can only heal souls, not flesh, and she has misplaced her real body, leaving her unsure how her Transformation would work if she were whole.[2]

Other Details

She can heal souls infected by Corruption, which she explains as an infection of the soul. Her ability allows her to restore corrupted souls to their intended shape. Her essence is infused with the Flame of Divinity, described as the antithesis of the Void and Corruption. She also possesses a fearsome resistance to being Corrupted, although she is not completely immune. During her battle against the Great Beast, she weakened the sea of Corruption in its soul and destroyed some of it.[2]

Other Abilities

Reveal
“ Broken Sword and his cohort. He might have been the deadliest among us, and Anvil might have been the most stalwart. I had my uses, as well — a perfect Utility Aspect to complement their fearsome power, and enough tenacity to survive the most dire perils. And then there was the Dreamspawn, whose cunning and insidious Aspect could solve problems that strength and courage could not. But it was Smile of Heaven who was the glue that held us all together. ”

― Ki Song to Cassie,
Chapter 2187 Seeds of War

Smile of Heaven was not only exceptional in ability but also seemed as though the world itself revolved around her, as if she was beloved by the heavens or at least by the Nightmare Spell itself. She was the daughter of the first man to become a Master and the first to receive her True Name in the First Nightmare. She possessed a unique talent for bringing people together, which was crucial for survival in the Dream Realm. Her influence was so great that her presence held together a group of individuals who, without her, would have been at odds.[11]

Background

Childhood

Reveal
Based on the stories from older retainers of Clan Valor, who had a good relationship with Broken Sword and Smile of Heaven — the comrades of the patriarch's son, Anvil. She and Anvil practically grew up together. In the past, few powerful families were renowned and powerful, with Lord Valor and Immortal Flame being patriarchs. Their children, Anvil and Smile of Heaven were close friends since they were more or less the same age. Jest has many stories about their mischief, but listening to them is not for the faint of heart.[12]

Tragedy

Reveal

The circumstances of Smile of Heaven's tragic death seemed fine on the surface, but she was not technically dead. She was a Hollow. She became hollow while pregnant with Nephis.[3] According to the book, at that point in time, Broken Sword had already become a Master. The two of them were partners both in life and in battle, leading their cohort together. That would suggest that Smile of Heaven was a Master too.[4]

“ ...even though Smile of Heaven was gone, we still achieved all those things because of her. It was just that we weren't held together by the woman herself anymore — instead, we were held together by her ghost. ”

― Ki Song to Cassie,
Chapter 2187 Seeds of War

In Ki Song's narration, Smile of Heaven and her father died during a Category Five Gate calamity in North America while stalling Nightmare Creatures to allow civilians to evacuate. Broken Sword refused to believe she was truly dead, convinced her soul had not been destroyed but was lost. This belief stemmed from her Aspect, which allowed her soul to wander and explore, making him think she was merely unable to return. The only way Smile of Heaven could have survived, even in theory, was if she somehow reached the Category Five Seed beyond the Category Five Gate and challenged the Fifth Nightmare before being consumed by Cursed Ones. This idea was incredibly unlikely, bordering on impossible as her soul was merely Ascended, yet Broken Sword became fixated on the idea.[11]

Smile of Heaven's death was not just a personal tragedy but the catalyst for the war that followed. Her legacy bound her former allies together, but in the absence of her unifying presence, their differing convictions ultimately tore them apart.[11]

Trivia

  • Orum stated that she displayed impressive physical strength and endurance that is a little monstrous.[8]
  • It was mentioned in Chapter 1942 that Smile of Heaven and Broken Sword, who had been together since their Academy days, were officially married. Smile of Heaven's mother personally made her wedding cake.
  • In Chapter 2163, Anvil was determined to challenge Second Nightmare that he recruited exceptional talents to join his cohort, including Ki Song and a boy named Asterion.
  • In the flashback in Chapter 2163, Anvil recruited exceptional talents—including Ki Song and Asterion—to challenge the Second Nightmare, and by Chapter 2166, his cohort—Broken Sword, Smile of Heaven, Ki Song, and Asterion—had entered the Seed of Nightmare and had not returned after two months; by Chapters 2171–2172, Anvil had become Ascended, implying the cohort succeeded and thus that Smile of Heaven also reached the Ascended rank, which aligns with later details that although Smile of Heaven became hollow while pregnant with Nephis (mentioned in Chapter 210), and Broken Sword, heartbroken after her supposed death, eventually rose to Saint after succeeding in the Third Nightmare (mentioned in Chapter 367), he had already become a Saint when Nephis was three (mentioned in Chapter 2188).
    • Broken Sword refused to believe she was truly dead, convinced her soul had not been destroyed but was lost. This belief stemmed from her Aspect, which allowed her soul to wander and explore, making him think she was merely unable to return. Given the devastation in North America, her survival was only possible if she had reached the Category Five Gate and entered the connected Category Five Seed to challenge the Fifth Nightmare.[11]
    • Broken Sword's obsession with challenging the Fifth Nightmare became his driving goal, believing he had to rescue Smile of Heaven.[11]
