“ Ah, I see. Judging by your expressions, my plans sound... overly ambitious. But wouldn't you agree? To live is to aspire.. One has to have at least this much ambition to live a satisfying life in this dull, dying world... ” ― Asterion to Nephis and Sunny,
Chapter 2762 Demon of Hunger
Asterion is a former member of Broken Sword's cohort and one of the Sovereigns.[4][6] He is the last survivor of the Path of Ascension cult.[7]
Appearance
Debut
A gaunt man was sitting in the dust, wearing a tattered spacesuit. The visor of his helmet was cracked, and the oxygen in the tank attached to his back had long run out.
Nevertheless, the gaunt man was somehow still alive. — Chapter 1840 Bathed in Starlight |
In Chapter 2726, Asterion appeared as a tall man with a slight, friendly smile illuminating his captivating face. Though he had to be in his late forties by now, he did not look older than thirty. His tan skin was smooth and flawless, and his disheveled black hair fell to his shoulders, as if it had absorbed the heat of the sun. His eyes were a beautiful amber shade, almost golden—or perhaps truly golden—glistening strikingly as they reflected the light. When he appeared, an overpowering presence enveloped the world, making it feel as though the world had become a thin film floating on the surface of an endless, infinitely hungry abyss.
Supreme
True Form
Asterion's true form is that of an idea.[8]
Personality
Asterion is a peculiar and unsettling figure who gives Jest the creeps. Though he appears friendly and curious, something about him seems unnatural—"as if he was not quite human, but merely a thing wearing human skin".[9]
Due to his abilities, he is unsettling to be around despite being effortlessly charming, devilishly smart, capable, and really strong, yet sometimes giving the eerie impression that something was deeply wrong about him, hiding in the depths of his eyes.[7]
Asterion embraced the creature part of himself fully, to the point that he did not even consider himself to be human, instead existing as something that walked on the edge between a human and a Nightmare Creature. He was portrayed as insidious, calculating, and deliberate, having spent decades imprisoned on the Moon while planning his return, waiting until the Chain of Nightmares caused the number of powerful humans to rise exponentially, as if humanity had become a big enough feast. As the descendant of the God of Hunger and a Supreme who controlled a Domain, he appeared driven by an obsessive pursuit of Apotheosis, similar to Kanakht, with the implication that he could expand his Domain to encompass all of humanity and potentially consume humanity itself to fuel his ascension.[10]
He possessed a strange, malevolent hunger and an overwhelming desire to possess and consume everything, openly declaring that he wanted everything, including Citadels, soldiers, people, and all of humanity. He displayed a cold, manipulative demeanor, seamlessly hiding the eerie depths of his hunger behind a pleasant mask, while pursuing divine blood, power, and Apotheosis with ruthless intent. He did not consider himself human but instead viewed himself as a creature driven by insatiable hunger, treating humanity as something to claim, use, and ultimately devour to fulfill his ambitions.[11]
He was perceived as insane or unwell at first glance, yet he was established to be of sound mind, with a way of seeing the world that lay entirely outside what humans considered normal and a thinking process free of common preconceptions. He was described as a worthy heir of the Heart God, a more or less flawless embodiment of insatiable hunger and unending growth, whose endless growth could never be satiated and therefore demanded ever more fuel, making ambitions that went far beyond what Sunny and Nephis dared to want seem natural to him. His disposition suggested an eerie, possibly twisted nature, shaped either by the Path of Ascension zealots who raised him or by the annihilation of their isolated colony, to the point that it was conceivable he might have slaughtered them himself as the beginning of his journey of endless growth. His ambitions were vast and consuming: he wanted to devour humanity, Nightmare Creatures, the Forgotten God, existence itself, and ultimately the Void, planning not merely to equal the seven great gods but to attain power greater than theirs by uniting all of the Flame of Desire within himself. In demeanor, he spoke in a pleasant, almost compassionate tone, chuckled quietly, grinned often, and displayed calm, unsettling confidence and arrogance, openly asserting that he could not be killed or sealed without human sacrifice, subtly mocking his opponents' moral constraints, remaining silent when pressed, and finally proposing a bet when a deal was refused.[12]
Nature
The Third Sovereign, known as the Dreamspawn, was regarded with such dread that even speaking his name, Asterion, was believed to draw his attention, while merely knowing of him risked attracting his gaze. His reputation stemmed not only from his monstrous nature but also from his role in the death of Broken Sword. Mordret revealed that his father had only dared to betray Broken Sword because he had struck a deal with the Dreamspawn, paying Mordret himself as the price for that alliance. Through cunning and treachery, the Dreamspawn helped bring down one of humanity's strongest Saints, proving himself the deadlier monster in the end.[13]
Although trapped on the Moon by his allies, Mordret insisted that the Dreamspawn remained alive, his return inevitable after the fall of the King of Swords and the Queen of Worms, who had long suppressed him. With their deaths, nothing stood in the way of his influence spreading back to Earth and the Dream Realm.[13]
Mordret described the Dreamspawn as a mirror image of Changing Star — a Dreamspawn like her, born of both worlds but belonging to neither. Unlike Nephis, who rejected the Nightmare part of her nature to embody incorruptible humanity, the original Dreamspawn embraced his creature half fully. He no longer thought of himself as human, but rather as a monster wearing a human face — a being more terrifying than any other.[13]
He is the first human child born in the Dream Realm, raised in a culture entirely different from human civilization, and only encountering humanity after becoming Awakened. Because of his origins, he considered himself a stranger to mankind, earning the title of Dreamspawn — or, as Sunny phrased it, Nightmare Spawn. His nature is paradoxical, making it unclear whether he follows the Path of Ascension or Corruption, perhaps embodying both.[14]
Aspect, Ability, & Flaw
Note: Click Show/Hide Spoiler to reveal hidden information.
Asterion possessed a set of progressively evolving mental abilities tied to emotions and thoughts.[7]
According to Mordret, Asterion's powers are beyond comprehension. He also warned Sunny not to speak his name aloud, as it might be heard by him.[2] (This also evident by the fact no one ever uttered his name, it's either Abomination or Dreamspawn.[3][15][16])
Asterion, known as the third Sovereign of humanity and referred to as the Dreamspawn, is a mysterious and potentially dangerous figure whose true nature remains largely unknown. Unlike the other prominent Sovereigns, very little is understood about him, as all traces of his existence and that of his followers were thoroughly erased by Anvil and Ki Song. It is known that he was cut off and locked away on the moon, but whether he died there remains uncertain—most do not believe he is truly gone. His Domain is said to be tied to the knowledge of him, growing stronger the more people know about him. Though Asterion may not currently pose an active threat, no one assumes he is harmless, especially given his rumored involvement in the death of Nephis' father. The lack of concrete knowledge is deeply frustrating for those trying to prepare for his possible return, especially since Mordret—the one person who understood Asterion best—is missing. In anticipation of his reemergence, Sunny's Shadow Clan has been quietly preparing, not to confront Asterion directly, but to counter any influence or resurgence of his followers, who could serve as the vanguard of a greater threat.[17]
His power is connected to awareness and recognition. The more people know about his existence—especially his name—the stronger he becomes.[18]
Asterion possesses the ability to manipulate and compel living beings, as well as knowledge of things not meant to be known, which Mordret suspected to be his Aspect. His true nature, however, comes from his divine heritage: he bears the lineage of the Heart God — associated with souls, emotions, memory, growth, and hunger — granting him the monstrous ability to consume and assimilate. This has made him a chimera capable of bearing multiple Divine Lineages simultaneously, something thought impossible. Over time, he inherited the Heart God's lineage from his parents, assimilated the War God's lineage from Mordret's blood, received the Beast God's lineage from Ki Song, and plundered the Storm God's lineage from Nightwalker. He spared Nephis in order to one day claim the Sun God's lineage, and has long awaited the emergence of the Shadow God's lineage in Sunny. His ultimate goal is to complete the collection of all six Divine Lineages, though his true purpose for doing so remains unknown.[14]
Show/Hide Aspect Abilities
| Received in | Ability | Chapter Mentioned | Status | Aspect Abilities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First Awakening (After First Nightmare) |
Dormant (Sleeper) | 2657 | Active | His Dormant Ability allowed him to sense the emotions of other living beings, making him an empath.[7] |
| Awakening (After first escape from Dream Realm) |
Awakened (Awakened) | 2657 | Active | His Awakened Ability enabled him to feed on the powerful emotions of others, consuming them in a sinister manner.[7] |
| Ascension (After Second Nightmare) |
Ascended (Master) | 2657 | Active | Upon becoming Ascended, both of his Dormant and Awakened Abilities evolved: his emotional sensing expanded to include the thoughts of others, turning him into a mind reader, while his influence over emotions grew into the ability to put his thoughts into other people's heads, allowing him to influence and manipulate the minds and emotions of others. These combined abilities made him unsettling to be around, since his allies could never be certain which thoughts and feelings were truly their own.[7] |
| Transcendance (After Third Nightmare) |
Transcendent (Saint) |
2998 | Active | Asterion assumed his Transcendent form in Chapter 2998, revealing the true form of the Dreamspawn in all its grotesque glory. His body expanded into something monstrous and gargantuan, rushing forward like a destructive avalanche and blotting out the sky. He became a grotesque, menacing mountain of flesh composed of innumerable maws, myriad limbs, countless tails, and innumerable hungry eyes—parts of all the beings he had consumed and absorbed into his being. The immense mass of flesh twisted and undulated while bleeding, and his innumerable insatiable maws sank their fangs into other parts of his own body, as if he were devouring himself in a frenzy of hunger. Even when his gargantuan body was split in half and burned, it restored itself moments later and returned to its previous form. During the battle, it attacked with manifestations such as a hundred scorpion tails, a thousand claws, and a million fangs, while its myriad maws growled as Asterion struggled against his enemies.[19] |

Domain Asterion's Domain (known as Hunger Domain) is more of an idea than a place.[2] His Domain seems to expand as knowledge of him spreads, which is why the Sovereigns deliberately hide their existence to prevent him from growing too powerful.[18] See also: Hunger Domain
Extend of powers at Supreme Rank Asterion's Aspect centered on mental and spiritual manipulation, allowing him to sense and influence the thoughts and emotions of others, as well as feed on them to grow stronger, at least within the scope of his Dormant, Awakened, and Ascended Abilities.[21]

His Name
The name of the Dreamspawn, Asterion is described as possessing the power to spread. Once an individual learns the name, it roots itself in their mind, compelling them to repeat it unconsciously in conversation. This repetition causes further transmission, as anyone who hears the name also becomes a carrier. There is no cure existed since the name functioned as an idea that acts as a virulent virus.[23]
Will
His power spread through human thought, as he was both a man and an idea—specifically, an expression of his Supreme Will. Exposure to the idea of Asterion was inherently dangerous, as merely learning of it could result in infection, making conventional methods of ideological warfare ineffective against him.[24]
Limitations
Despite this, Asterion's power was not absolute. Not all individuals exposed to the idea of him became thralls, indicating limits to his ability to subjugate others. Observations showed that resistance to his influence depended partly on mental resilience and even more strongly on an individual's mental state, particularly the strength of their belief in Changing Star and the Human Domain. Because of this, efforts were focused on limiting exposure to his name and influence, strengthening belief in the Human Domain, and isolating his thralls to prevent further spread.[24]
- Gilead was the most impervious to Asterion's plague, as his single-minded and uncompromising loyalty to the king he had sworn to serve prevented him from submitting to any other authority.[25]
- The Shadow Clan was susceptible to the plague, although their resistance to it was quite high compared to others in the Human Domain. This increased resistance was attributed to the fact that each member knew their Sovereign personally, unlike most subjects of the Longing Domain, for whom Nephis was merely an abstract symbol. Despite this resistance, they had still lost a few agents to the Hunger Domain, though identifying infected members was far easier because the Mark of Shadows rejected them, which could be visibly detected through their serpent tattoo.[26]
- In Chapter 2824, Asterion had the ability to read and understand people's weaknesses, explaining that although everyone had a weakness, some were easier to exploit than others, and that dealing with powerful, cunning, lucky, or highly skilled individuals posed no real problem for him. Through this ability, he determined that his subordinates could not deal with Jet without either sacrificing too many talents or destroying her instead of making her his, which led him to act personally.
- In Chapter 2825, Asterion demonstrated the ability to read and influence Jet's thoughts until she ultimately escaped the Night Garden by teleporting away after briefly freeing herself from the Dreamspawn's mental influence.
Background
Cohort
Asterion was formerly a member of Broken Sword's cohort. Among the Sovereigns, he was the most mysterious. No one seemed to know where he came from and where he went after the Broken Sword's cohort was disbanded. There was barely any mention of him at all. He was not connected to the third great Legacy clan or any lesser clan, at least from the looks of it. Even in the texts describing the deeds of Broken Sword and his companions, Asterion's name was only mentioned in passing, as though he had never made any important contributions. Sunny thinks he's the most terrifying of the three.[4]
He was one from "Aster, Song, Vale" who had returned from the Fourth Nightmare wreathed in a new authority.[1]
Trivia
- Mordret revealed that he is a Dreamspawn, just like Nephis. He also called him an abomination and confirmed to be the one who had taken Mordret hostage.[3]
- It was revealed in chapter 1126 that he protected Nephis from Valor and Song's attempts to get rid of her.[27]
- Asterion has prevented the Sun God's lineage from being snuffed out by protecting the young Nephis from Valor and Song Clans and taking Mordret from Anvil. It is almost as if he is collecting the carriers of divine lineages. It was speculated by Nephis that Asterion remains passive because he was waiting for Shadow God's lineage to reveal itself.[28][29]
- According to Mordret, he had seen Asterion attempted to reach the Tomb of Ariel once and failed. It revealed that Asterion had already been to the Nightmare Desert over a decade ago. He also doesn't have to report his actions to Anvil and Ki Song, and they don't know his motives.[5]
- In Chapter 1126, Beastmaster never mentioned his name and referred to him as "Dreamspawn".
- In Chapter 1126, Beastmaster mention about the abomination being indisposed.
- In Chapter 1528, Mordret revealed that Asterion is the one who has the Lineage of Heart.
- Asterion is very interested in people with divine bloodlines.[2][30] He needed something from the descendants of the gods but could only obtain it once their blood had Awakened.[31]
- He conquered the First Nightmare and Awakened after anchoring his soul to a Citadel, yet he was unaffected by the winter solstice, which should have displaced him within the Dream Realm.[9]
- Anvil emphasizes that Asterion is highly knowledgeable and experienced, having spent his entire life in the Dream Realm, and possesses a formidable Aspect.[9]
- He made deals with Anvil:
- First deal: Anvil has struck a deal with Asterion, in exchange for helping him become a Master, Anvil will assist Asterion in finding a way to enter the waking world.[9]
- Second deal: When Smile of Heaven died, Anvil accepted a deal with Asterion, setting him on a path to kill Broken Sword.[32]
- It was mentioned by Ki Song in Chapter 2191, that Asterion's mother had uncovered the Lineage Memory of Heart God.
- He became fixated on Earth's moon, Luna, due to a mystery hidden on its surface.[29]
- He the successor of Heart God, who possesses a powerful Aspect capable of performing mental attacks.[33]
- Nightwalker chose to bring Asterion and his followers instead of the champions of the House of Night because Asterion seemed like a good candidate for his plan to deal with immortals by affecting their minds.[33]
- Asterion killed Nightwalker upon their arrival in the Eternal City, once he no longer needed him.[33] He killed him in an attempt to absorb the lineage of Storm God, having lied about his intentions and possibly sought something in the Eternal City that he failed to find.[7]
- In Chapter 2722, he spoke to Cassie through a mysterious Ascended about the Minotaur.
- The man is not Asterion himself but a fully consumed avatar of the Dreamspawn, sent to confront Cassie.[34]
- Asterion appeared in Cassie's home, revealing his intent to eliminate her as a threat. He cruelly tore out her eye and destroyed her Echoes. Cassie was saved from him through a sudden external intervention that forced him to disengage.[35]
- In Chapter 2753, Asterion introduced himself for the first time as a Supreme who came to help in front of citizens in Bastion.
- Asterion did not want to challenge the Fifth Nightmare because he was striving to attain godhood without the assistance of the Nightmare Spell for two reasons:[36]
- He could, having no moral compass and no emotional attachments to humanity, making an easier and safer path preferable to him.[36]
- His grasp on his sense of self was tentative at best, as a person driven only by hunger and ambition, unmoored from everything and everyone else, who could not rely on something external to anchor his personhood in the storm of Apotheosis, which made him wary of the dire trial imposed by the Spell.[36]
- In Chapter 2764, he claimed a scenic church on the edges of the city in Bastion as his residence.
- The Sin of Solace was a cursed jade blade that was described as infecting everyone it cut with insidious madness, making it a particular threat even to Asterion, a Dreamspawn and a creature of the mind.[37]
- Even if Asterion's soul is destroyed but idea of the Dreamspawn still be intact, he can simply manifest a new body and a new soul for himself.[38]
