― Nephis to Sunny about his Shadow,
Chapter 273 Chrysalis

Show/Hide spoilers

Saint (Shadow Saint) was initially a dying Nightmare Creature in the turf war of the creatures in the ruins of Forgotten Shore.[13] Her Echo was received by Sunny.[17] She is his first Echo-turned-Shadow created using his Aspect.[15]

Appearance

Nightmare Creature

The last of the living statues was a female. Compared to the spiders, she was almost comically small in stature, standing no taller than Sunny. The graceful stone creature was armed with a sword and a round shield, wearing a plate armor that covered most of her body, leaving only two rubies burning with crimson flames that these creatures had instead of eyes.[13]

Echo

She was approximately as tall as Sunny, looking miniature in comparison to the rest of the Nightmare Creatures he had to face on the Forgotten Shore. She was also uniquely human-like in appearance. If not for the dark grey hue and the stonelike nature of her granite skin, Sunny might have even mistaken the strange monster for a Sleeper. Provided, he couldn't see much of her body behind the graceful dark armor.[14]

Human (Temporary)

Shadow

Shadow Monster

Clad in the lusterless black armor, with two ruby flames burning in the deep shadows of her visor, she looked like an incarnation of pure darkness, a noble demon send to wage war against heaven from the depths of hell.[15]

Before, the Echo felt like an empty shell, a magical tool rather than an actual being. Now, however, there were hints of mysterious will in her crimson eyes, a subtle sense there was a nascent spark of sentience burning somewhere deep within her lightless soul.[15]

Shadow Demon

Saint grew taller and more oppressive. Her graceful stonelike armor, which had looked as though it was cut from granite before, was now entirely black and glossy, very much like the onyx armor he had bought with the help of Kai.

Her skin, on the contrary, became smooth and as white as alabaster. She seemed much stronger, aware, and deadly.[18]

Ascended Demon

Her graceful figure brimming with new power. The glow of her ruby eyes seemed to have become brighter. Her onyx armor was still composed of polished, stonelike metal. Beneath it, her skin was still smooth and white as alabaster.[19]

On the inside, the darkness hiding in the body of the living statue now seemed much, much deeper, and the three embers seemed to have become substantially larger. More than that, they somehow appeared to be more complete. Not yet whole, but also not as broken and fragmented as they had been before.[19]

Her stone sword was later broken during the battle with the War Maidens inside the Temple of the Chalice.[20]

Ascended Devil

An intricate sabaton, forged from black, stone-like metal, stood beside Sunny, initially at roughly the same height as him. Saint, now towering above Sunny, was obscured by beautiful onyx armor. Her stone body was slender and graceful, but at over two meters tall, Saint seemed imposing. Her oppressive presence was worthy of a Devil.[21]

The black armor itself had not changed much, it had always been a product of magnificent craftsmanship and seemed even more superb and menacing now. Saint's skin, which had been grey like a stone before, then white as alabaster, was now smooth and black as polished onyx. Her ruby jewels burned with ominous crimson flames.[21]

Embrace by four shadows, her tall figure shone with dark radiance. The shadows around the demonic knight swelled, becoming deeper and darker, surrounding her like a tenebrous mantle with a hint of true, elemental darkness in that lightless glow.[21]

Her familiar stone sword was whole once again, formed from flowing darkness, it appeared utterly black, with a feeling of dark, nebulous power radiating from its stygian blade. On her other hand, a round shield of stone-like metal appeared, with the same polished onyx surface similar to the taciturn Shadow's armor.[21]

Transcendent Devil

Saint's figure is enveloped by black flames, making it impossible to see her. A powerful wind blows through the Rhino's interior, causing unbearable heat and coldness. Sunny summons a barrier of shadows to surround Saint, but something explodes within the barrier, sending him flying back. A wave of darkness rolled through the Rhino, turning its interior into a mess and cracking its armored windows. Saint is now much deeper and more frightening.[22]

Her onyx body radiates a sense of vast, dreadful power, and the menacing crimson flames dancing in her ruby eyes are brighter. His Shadow, now a Transcendent Devil, tilts her head slightly, looking at him with her usual indifference. Sunny can feel a hint of emotion hidden behind it, such as pride, satisfaction, and gratitude.[22]

In Chapter 1906, Saint had removed her shattered armor.

Saint wore simple garments beneath onyx plates, and her figure was flawlessly alluring, complementing her inhumanly beautiful face. Her skin matched the color of the onyx armor, giving the illusion that she was made of stone. However, Saint was a being of flesh and dust. Her visage reminded Sunny of the Storm God statue in the Ebony Tower shrine. Nether had drawn inspiration from this statue when creating the Stone Saints.[23]

Supreme Devil

Saint's fearsome armor remained black as the lightless expanse of the Underworld, but her stonelike skin had transformed into a flawless white, like sublime jade. Immediately after her evolution, she towered at least ten meters tall, resembling a monumental figure, though she later returned to her usual height, just above Sunny's. Despite preferring her usual height, she possessed the ability to change her size and mass at will, a power gained after absorbing the essence of one of Mordret's Reflections. That ability, tied to the negative quality of Nothing, had grown stronger after she absorbed far more Nothing in the Palace of Imagination, leaving her true height uncertain. Her body could weigh as much as a mountain of jade.[24]

Personality

Her main trait is being taciturn.[25] She had also repeatedly shown her disdain toward things that seemed to be replicas of her kind.[26] It was shown both with the Black Knight and the broken dolls.[27][28][26]

After becoming an Ascended and being praised by Sunny, she responded by silently raising her hand, making a fist, and lightly striking the left side of her breastplate twice.[19]

In Chapter 1889, Sunny was able to sense faint echoes of Saint's unshakeable will, such as her calmness, cold confidence, and pride. He cannot read Saint's thoughts, but he understands that the memories of her past life are not entirely gone. They are dim and faint, like a distant dream.

Battle Ability

The battle technique of Saint is indomitable and oppressive while her battle style is firm and grounded which is suitable for flawless defense.[29][30][31] Saint demonstrated sublime technique, being measured, calculated, and insidiously lethal. She was solid, grounded, and explosively destructive.[9]

Ability

After defeating a Reflection of a true darkness being in Chapter 1899, Saint could freely unleash elemental darkness and remain enveloped by it, benefiting from the [Mantle of Darkness]. Sunny believed this new power could be her first step towards becoming a Tyrant, as most Tyrants controlled territory or an army of minions. Engulfing an area in elemental darkness was akin to gaining control, similar to Sovereigns.[23]

Saint appeared to have acquired several new powers, including summoning a pool of elemental darkness, turning into a torrent of it, manifesting a suit of armor, and reducing her weight and size. Sunny was uncertain if these were new attributes or evolutions of existing ones.[32]

She gained the ability to summon a pool of elemental darkness and manifest a suit of armor by slaying Revel's Reflection. She can also become a torrent of darkness, traveling in a heartbeat. This experience was different from Sunny's usual journey through shadows, as it felt hollow. It did not feel embraced by the flow of elemental darkness. Instead, it was cold and unfathomable, too alien and indifferent to be welcoming. Even being a part of it, one felt nothing but profound solitude.[33]

She can now effortlessly change her weight, making her as light as a feather. This ability was similar to Sunny, granted by the Onyx Shell. Saint had been unable to adjust her mass while wearing her original armor, but now, it's part of her personal darkness. The effect was more or less the same, but the process differed. It was as if she did not simply change her mass. Instead, a negative quality was added to it, thus reducing the weight.[33]

She had also gained the ability to reduce her size and used it to return to her original modest stature. She changed her size and made it so she was a full head taller than Sunny.[33]

The suit of armor was an extension of Saint's [Blade of Darkness] Ability, while the power to summon a flood of elemental darkness might be due to her [Heart of Darkness] growing strength.[32]

Background

The stone warrior's armor seemed much more ancient than the Black Knight's and there was ruby dust that flowed from the stone creature's wounds instead of blood. It was almost like these strange creatures were designed to possess their own weird form of life.[1]

Based on her rune description as an echo, she was one of the living stone warriors originally created by the last child of the -unknown- designed to bring peace, but instead born into an endless war.[1]

Saint and her kind were an artificial race created by Nether, the ruler of the Underworld and the Demon of Choice or Destiny, depending on how one decided to translate the runes. Also, Saint's armor bore a strong resemblance to the Mantle of the Underworld, although it was not quite as impressive.[34] (See also Stone Saints)

The original Stone Saint was one of the smallest and weakest living statues that used to dwell in the Dark City. As an Awakened Monster, she was the only one left to finish the battle against the Fallen attackers. Saint was most likely only a foot soldier in Nether's army, due to her armor being a masterpiece of craftsmanship, but not as impressive as the seven Mantles gifted to high-ranking officers of the stone legion by the Prince of the Underworld.[34]

Trivia

  • To transform Saint into a Shadow, Sunny spent 100 fragments.[15]
  • Saint did not get new abilities from rising to a new Rank.[19]
  • Saint became Sunny's alibi during the Antarctica Campaign, the news assumed that Lord Mongrel is actually female and different from Sunny.[35]
  • Saint is seen using Stifled Scream to accumulate power for [Echoing Silence] enchantment.[36]
  • Saint seemed pleased due to Sunny unlocking Marble Shell.[37]
  • Sunny had tried to communicate telepathically with Saint but the [Blessing of Dusk] did not work on her at all, probably due to the Shadow's immunity to mind attacks.[38]
  • After eating the orb from Heart of Darkness, Saint was unable to receive the blessing of the fire. The augmentation had worked well in Sunny's basement before the Southern Campaign, but Saint underwent a fundamental transformation, becoming a Devil infused with elemental darkness. While true darkness somehow worked in tandem with Sunny's shadows, it refused to accept Neph's light.[39]
  • Saint was hard to wound but she was actually quite vulnerable once her armor and resilient skin were breached.[40]
  • Saint was somewhat immune to Undying Slaughter's soul attacks, but the ghostly blade was just as lethal to her as Sunny and Fiend, despite Saint's resilience and two weapons capable of blocking and damaging intangible beings.[41]
  • According to Nephis, Shadow Saint felt more dangerous than the Fiend despite being of a lower Rank.[42]
  • Saint, who previously grew in rank by consuming Memories with the Spell, was unable to be nurtured leaving her as a Transcendent Devil, as he had no way to strengthen her.[43] Sunny was unsure of how Saint increase her Class or Rank without the Spell.[44]
  • Shadow Saint, one of the Stone Saints, was a child of the Underworld empowered by the blessing of shadows.[45] She is a masterpiece created by the Demon of Choice, solid, monolithic, and purposeful. Her power is enhanced by the darkness and shadows.[46]
  • In Chapter 1894, Saint had picked up a few treacherous tricks after following Sunny for all these years.
  • In Chapter 1906, Saint had removed her shattered armor. (More information on Appearance section Transcendent Devil form)
  • Onyx Saint's visage reminded Sunny of the Storm God statue in the Ebony Tower shrine.[23] This was once again emphasized by Sunny in Chapter 2498.
  • In Chapter 2450, her gaze lingered on Sunny longer than usual, as if sensing remnants of the Jade Titan persona he had used during the Death Game.
  • Saint had attained the rank of Supreme after the events from Kingdom of Imagination. Although Saint had not become a Tyrant, several of her Attributes had evolved, and she gained a frightening new Ability.[4]
  • After Saint evolved to Supreme, the counter of shadow fragments that once appeared in her runes disappeared completely, without being replaced. This meant she could no longer use the usual method of gathering shadow fragments to advance and could not become Sacred through the same means.[47]
  • In Chapter 2578, although Saint possessed the [War Master] Attribute, she lacked an efficient means of conveying her authority to her soldiers—a capability she would likely gain upon becoming a Tyrant.
  • In Chapter 2740, Saint, as a Supreme, had been able to vanquish the true darkness in Revel's lair because she was of a higher Rank than Revel, and therefore could exert greater authority over the element they were both attuned to.
  • In Chapter 3152, Sunny liberated Saint (became True Shadow Creature) for Fifth Nightmare preparations. (Refer to Status of the Shadows)
  • It was mentioned in Chapter 3155 that Saint and her legion had settled in the area of the Dark City where the solemn square and the Dark Cathedral were located.
