― Lord of Shadows To Revel,
Chapter 1888 A Neat Trick

Lord of Shadows is the rumored mysterious Saint who has been surviving in the Death Zone between the Sword Domain and the Song Domain.[2]

Appearance

The appearance of the Lord of Shadows was elusive as his voice, encased in onyx armor with a mask of a fierce demon. The man's features were hidden behind the mask, leaving a feeling that he is a formless shadow. His height couldn't determine, but it felt as if he dwarfed everyone in the ancient temple, looking down with cold, malevolent arrogance.[5]

Lord of Shadows possessed a cold indifference but sinister and dark. The impenetrable darkness nestling in the eyes of his ferocious mask only made him seem more eerie and captivating.[6]

The Lord of Shadows, meanwhile... was fearsome and imposing. His face was always hidden behind a mask — sometimes, it was a featureless mask that made him look eerily unfathomable, and sometimes, it was the ferocious mask of a dark demon. His movements were sharp and powerful, full of ruthless intent. His sinister voice was cold and emotionless.

He made Nephis feel on edge.

— Nephis' description,
Chapter 1813 Behind the Mask

Personality

He was aloof and described as sinister and frightening.[7]

According to Nephis, he seemed an unfriendly sort and likely used secrets to entice her into deepening her debt. He was strong and devious, with enough resources to disregard Clan Valor's riches.[8] He was a man of dire passion behind his cold exterior, and his unwillingness to see her dead before fulfilling her promise seemed sincere.[9] He was nothing like the rumors. He is considerate despite his tyrannical strength, kind despite wanting to appear sinister, and very shrewd despite his eccentricity.[10]

Aspect, Abilities & Flaw

His Aspect is related to shadows, and commands powerful Echoes.[7]

The Lord of Shadows was a manifested avatar, so his natural form was that of a shadow. Sunny could abandon his physical form without losing control of the incarnation, becoming a shadow.[11]

Battle Ability

Despite lacking a strong combat affinity, the Lord of Shadows was a personification of death due to his lethal skill, devious intelligence, and merciless killing intent. He had three powerful Echoes and was aware of every peril facing the battle formation.[12]

The Lord of Shadows did not only look like a fiend, but he is the fiend. He moves with the grace of a dancer and the ruthless precision of a butcher, his sword hitting every target with deadly accuracy. The Awakened warriors' attacks either missed him or glanced off his polished onyx armor, leaving no scratch. He easily cuts down even powerful Nightmare Creatures, leaving them severely mangled. He remains calm and merciless, his gaze cold and detached. Most disturbingly, he hums an upbeat tune during the carnage, revealing a twisted enjoyment in the massacre, which deeply unsettles his enemies.[13]

History

A dozen Sleepers were sent to Godgrave last year and were rescued by him who brought them to a Citadel under his control. Instead of allowing the Sleepers to anchor in his Citadel, the Lord of Shadows escorted them out of Godgrave and sent them to one of Song's strongholds.[7]

Valor and Song are interested in Godgrave, as it is likely to become the main battlefield of their war. Song clan tried recruiting the Lord of Shadows and sent Mordret but failed to persuade him to swear allegiance to the Queen of Worms. It was rumored that Mordret was defeated, and his vessel was destroyed.[7]

The duel between the Lord of Shadows and the Fire Keepers lasted only a few minutes. However, they were all defeated in barely two seconds.[14]

Speculations

Reveal
  • He might have inherited the lineage of Shadow God.[8]
    • He seemed to possess the lineage of Shadow God with his Aspect wielding the authority over shadows.[8]
  • A mask similar to Ananke's, which was a symbol of the priests of the Nightmare Spell.[8]
    • He might be connected to the priesthood of the Nightmare Spell, or the Demon of Fate directly.[8]
  • He seems like a solitary man, with no clan behind him or a Domain.[8]
  • His swordsmanship seems to be more dangerous than the Princess of Valor. He has built an impressive battle art which seems like he created alone.[8]
  • The Lord of Shadows was a true sword saint, one of the few born since the descent of the Nightmare Spell.[8]
    • He had used was more or less a perfect replica of the refined and domineering style that the Knights of Valor practiced. But it was merely one of the styles the Lord of Shadows seemed to have mastered.[8]
  • He might be Nephis's father's pupil or a disciple of that pupil. Due to the second battle style, he had shown.[8]
  • The Lord of Shadows was a subject of speculation among the Legacy Clans, who believed in his family background and pedigree. Sunny wanted them to speculate as much as possible, moving away from the truth while deepening their impression of him.[15]
    • The most popular theory was that he was tied to the founder of the House of Night, Nightwalker.[15]
    • Some considered him an outcast from the Song Domain, while others suspected he was the bastard son of a Legacy Clan in the Sword Domain.[15]
    • Some even suspected he was secretly raised by the mysterious third Sovereign, Asterion, possibly from the same faction.[15]
  • Rumors from Sword Army main camp:
The main camp's soldiers knowledge of the expedition force's hardships and the battle for Vanishing Lake came from embellished tales, possibly spread by Clan Valor's elders for morale or shaped by Cassie's influence. These stories emphasized the valor of Summer Knight, Changing Star, and the mysterious Lord of Shadows.[16]

Sunny, though in self-imposed isolation, knew of the formidable reputation surrounding the Lord of Shadows—a powerful warrior wielding darkness with precise ruthlessness and a strategic mind capable of protecting his forces. Despite his tendency to downplay his prowess, Sunny found the depiction impressive.[16]

To the average Awakened, the Lord of Shadows was an awe-inspiring, almost mythical figure. The Sword Army felt fortunate to fight beside him, while the Song Army would soon dread his presence. However, it remained a secret that this imposing figure was only a part of Sunny's full power.[16]

While the Lord of Shadows commanded great respect, his fame was overshadowed by the brilliant legacy of Changing Star, the last descendant of the Immortal Flame clan. This contrast was fitting given their natures—Sunny was a figure of shadow and mystery, while Nephis shone as a symbol of hope and light. Unlike the enigmatic Lord of Shadows, Nephis had long been a cherished hero, embodying the aspirations of the people.[17]
  • According to Karna, the rumors surrounding the Lord of Shadows are as follows:[18]
    • Some believe he is a madman with a "Flaw" that compels him to revel in bloodshed and slaughter.[18]
    • Others say he is the last of a ruined clan, seeking vengeance against all humanity.[18]
    • There are whispers that he is a killer who fled to the Dream Realm to avoid capture by the Soul Reaper.[18]
    • Some suggest he may not be human but a Nightmare Creature pretending to be one.[18]
    • The darkest rumor is that he might be the original vessel of the Skinwalker or something even more terrifying.[18]
  • The soldiers and camp members of the Song Army felt both fear and awe toward the Lord of Shadows. His reputation as a monstrous figure who could rival Princess Revel spread widely, and his mysterious power added to the rumors surrounding him. Ray was terrified by the memory of his encounter, recalling how the Lord casually mentioned sparing his life as if killing him was the default. Despite the terror he inspired, the Lord of Shadows' choice to spare the human guards, at the request of Lady Changing Star, brought some relief and gratitude among the soldiers. However, the fact that he could subdue powerful defenders without taking life only amplified their fear, making them wonder what might happen if he ever chose not to hold back.[19]
