“ You probably don't know. How could you know? But knowledge… knowledge can be really heavy. It can be as heavy as the heaviest thing in the world. ”

― Cassie to Sunny,
Chapter 56 The Heaviest Thing in the World

Cassia (or Cassie) is an important character in Shadow Slave. She had given up on her life and accepted death but she was saved by Nephis soon after she arrived in the Forgotten Shore. Since then, she has managed to survive, get stronger, and eventually return back to Earth.[22][23]

Appearance

Debut - Waking World

She was delicate, demure, and very pretty. With pale blond hair, big blue eyes, and an exquisite face. She looks like a beautiful porcelain doll.[24]

Debut - Dream Realm

The first time Sunny met Cassie in the Forgotten Shore, she was delicate and fragile, with blond hair and cerulean, aimless eyes. She was dressed in a simple tunic, with leather sandals on her feet and a cloak the color of sea waves draped around her shoulders.[25]

When Sunny saw Cassie again after three months of separation. The blind girl seemed more mature. She looked older, somehow. It was as if there was an invisible weight pressing down on her, the kind that people usually accumulate with the flow of years. Her demeanor was calmer, more restrained, and almost cold.[26]

Awakened - Waking World

A petite, exquisitely beautiful young woman who had delicate features, pale blond hair, and stunning blue eyes. Despite the fact that the young woman was dressed humbly, there was an aura about her that made it almost impossible to look away. It was as though she was a pristine heavenly creature that had somehow found her way to the dirty, imperfect mundane world. In her hand was a long white cane.[27]

Awakened - Dream Realm

She had long hair and wore a strange silver half-mask covering her eyes, its surface blind and intricately engraved. The mask matched the polished steel of the armor she was wearing on top of a midnight blue coat, comprised of a short cuirass, vambraces, greaves, and a segmented pauldron. Quiet Dancer hung on her belt and there was also a long dagger opposite it, its guard twisting upward. What changed most of all was her demeanor. The blind girl seemed much older, firmer, and poised, but also weary as if pressed down upon by the weight of years.[28]

Awakened - Second Nightmare

An elegant young woman dressed in an austere black garment. She was tall and slender, with pale skin and lustrous raven-black hair that moved gently in the wind. Her face possessed an almost otherworldly beauty to it, its lines full of solemn grace and splendor. Her eyes were covered by a simple strip of black cloth, the same color as the dress she wore.[29]

The contrast between the austere black dress and the flawless white skin, between the softness of her captivating face and the severity of the crude blindfold, created a tantalizing, ominous, and slightly disturbing sight. There was a leather belt tied around her slender waist and on it hung a black scabbard. It was Quiet Dancer.[29]

Ascended - Waking World

She was wearing civilian clothes. Her attire was tidy and mundane, but despite that, no one could mistake her for an ordinary person. The solemn and otherworldly beauty of the blind girl surrounded her like an invisible barrier, making a few people who came to light their own candles stay away, looking at her with stunned reverence.

— Description,
Chapter 761 Burning Candles

Cassie had chosen a simple, but flattering gown of soft colors for the Valor clan ball. Her bracelets and jewelry were picked to match the silver half-mask that she wore like a crown. Draped around her shoulders was the familiar blue-green cloak. She was holding the Quiet Dancer by the scabbard as if it was a cane.[30]

Ascended - Third Nightmare

In the Third Nightmare she had not changed much, her petite figure and delicate face were enthralling with hair like pale gold and stunning pure blue eyes.[31] Unlike how she was in the Nightmare Desert, Cassie looked hale and refreshed. Her striking beauty had bloomed once more, soft and quiet yet making it impossible to look away. She was also wearing an unfamiliar red peplos, its thin flowing fabric draped gracefully around her supple figure and decorated with white accents. However, there was also a deeper, less obvious change in her.[32]

Transcendent - Dream Realm

...a delicate young woman in a seawave cloak. Her hair was like a cascade of pale gold, and her eyes… were hidden behind a strip of blue cloth.

Despite the blindfold hiding her eyes, the young woman's ethereal, otherworldly beauty was simply breathtaking.

— Description,
Chapter 1606 Belated Apology

Cassie appears strange and haggard, with messy clothes, uncombed hair, signs of fatigue, and a hint of restless intensity. Her appearance is a reflection of her past, as she seems to have lost her innate state of composed balance. She seemed to change a lot.[33]

In Chapter 2726, Asterion cruelly tore out her eye. (Refer to Encounter with the Dreamspawn)

Supreme

In Chapter 3144, in the gathering of demigods, Cassia is described as a petite woman wearing a white tunic and a seawave cloak. Her delicate beauty is so stunningly breathtaking that it escaped description. Her hair is like a waterfall of pale gold, while her eyes are hidden behind a blindfold. There is an air of solemn mystery about her, and her presence is easily forgotten.

Spoiler

Cassie was a demigod who was described as beautiful enough to make countless men spill blood. However, in the Fifth Nightmare, she had learned to hide her appearance to avoid attracting attention. While posing as a wandering fortune teller, she looked unremarkable and shabby, like a vagabond who made a living by fooling gullible people. She sat on the ground near a fountain in the main square, wrapped in a tattered cloak. Her hair was covered by the hood of her cloak, and her face was hidden behind a veil. A wooden staff lay nearby, while a small rug, a chipped bowl, and a small pile of carved bones served as her fortune-telling tools. Cassie was blind, as she explicitly stated to her client, and she tilted her head slightly while listening or responding to people. She also smiled behind her veil and smiled faintly when speaking to Mordret.[34]

Personality

“ You probably don't know. How could you know? But knowledge… knowledge can be really heavy. It can be as heavy as the heaviest thing in the world. ”

― To Sunny,
Chapter 56 The Heaviest Thing in the World

She's a quiet girl and cares for people around her.[24] But she felt sorry for being useless that her mask of resolve slipped a little, revealing a desperate, angry, and frightened face beneath. According to Nephis, Cassie is strong.[35] Burdened by knowledge thanks to her Aspect, she is quite mysterious.[36]

Nephis mentioned that Cassie has changed a lot since the Forgotten Shore. She carries a lot of secrets. She has her own thoughts and ideas. She is equally as strong as the rest of them.[37] After Awakening, she closed herself off from the outside world and the Ascension made it more pronounced.[12]

Before, Cassie had been a sweet, but helpless girl, broken by the severity of her crippling Flaw. Now, the helpless girl was now a beautiful young woman whose softness concealed unwavering will and ominous power.[38] According to Sunny, Cassie's quiet and unassuming appearance made it easy to overlook her astounding mental prowess.[39] In Chapter 1474, Sunny mentioned Cassie was rather mysterious lately and unpredictable.

In Chapter 1642, she revealed her desire to save the world. For selfish reason that she wanted to save herself but as part of the world, she had people whom she cared about. She knew the world is doomed but most people don't realize how little they have left.

In public, Cassie was admired for her beauty and quiet demeanor, but her dangerous nature was not fully understood. Known as a competent advisor, some treated her with subtle reverence that afforded to oracles, but not highly respected due to her lack of accomplishment as a warrior.[10]

Cassie's habit of keeping secrets stems from trauma from watching her visions become self-fulfilling prophecies, with Sunny personally cementing this trauma in her heart.[40]

In Chapter 2143, Cassie could ignore her emotions. This was something she had long learned to do, as she had spent her life navigating countless foreign memories, fleeting glimpses of the future, and endless experiences of death through her marks. Because of this, she had already developed a habit of separating herself from her emotions to avoid being overwhelmed.

Her personality is defined by her quiet cunning, unassuming nature, and hidden lethality. She presents herself as "quiet, polite, and modest", which causes others to underestimate her and overlook her as a serious threat. Even Saint Jest, who saw through her facade, still failed to grasp the full extent of her danger, as if her deception ran so deep that it remained effective even after being exposed.[41]

Cassie is also deeply self-aware and strategic. She recognizes that her ability to be "easily forgotten" is an advantage, allowing her to operate in the shadows while others focus on the more prominent figures like Changing Star, the Lord of Shadows, Soul Reaper, and the Prince of Nothing. She understands that the world is full of grand, powerful figures, which makes her ability to remain overlooked yet just as deadly all the more effective.[41]

Despite her reserved exterior, Cassie is ruthless and battle-hardened. She has survived the Forgotten Shore, the Kingdom of Hope, the Battle of the Black Skull, the Nightmare Desert, and the Great River, proving her resilience and experience. While others may see her as weak or fragile, she acknowledges that she too is a monster, just one who hides it well, concealing her true nature behind a "pretty blindfold".[41]

According to Rain, she was far more suited for the darkness of the Shadow Clan than for the splendor of the Fire Keepers, and far more suited for that darkness than most of the actual members of the Shadow Clan.[42]

Battle Ability

“ Cassia might not be the strongest Master out there, but in terms of pure technique, she is among the best. And with how potent her precognition is... fighting her made me exercise skills and muscles that I had never had to exercise before. ”

― Morgan to Sunny about Cassie's technique,
Chapter 1136 Friendly Duel

This delicate girl wasn't the strongest or fastest of the Fire Keepers but fought with confident grace and deadly insight like a true master. Cassie's incredible advantage was due to her unique and powerful Aspect which only she could use. To perceive both the present and future, to comprehend two states of the battle, and swiftly act in response to achieve the result while being blind. No one could imagine the mental strain and burden she had, however, it was possible to perform such a feat with clarity. After all, she was also Nephis' pupil alongside Sunny.[43]

Other Abilities

Sorcery

Cassie's runic sorcery skill was learned from Noctis in her Second Nightmare, the enchanters of Valor, and on her own.[44]

Memory

Cassie's memory, which had evolved to perfect clarity as she developed through her Path of Ascension, likely culminating in Transcendence, allows her to recall everything with vivid detail. However, despite this absolute memory, large portions of her past remain missing and fragmented, creating a sense of emptiness. She navigates the world with incredibly sharp senses, far superior to even Saints, though her sight is completely absent, leaving her in darkness.[45]

Additionally, Cassie experiences the world not just from her perspective but through the viewpoints of multiple other people at the same time. This combination of heightened senses, blindness, and perceiving the world through others makes her experience staggeringly complex, yet she remains undeterred, confidently moving forward despite her fragmented past and disorienting present reality.[45]

Note: At the start of Volume 11, Cassie is reaching out with the tendrils of her Will to locate her own memories. She also possessed memories nearby that neither belonged to her nor to anyone whose memories she had previously witnessed.[46]

Using her Transcendent Ability, Cassie can maintain control of her Will to retrieve precise and detailed information. Ultimately, her Will functions as both a tool for memory navigation and as a means of investigation, enabling her to uncover hidden truths, critical events, and connections between individuals and historical crises.[47]

Cassie's Will is described as active and expansive, with its tendrils sprawling through the dark ocean of memories, where they grasp shards of her past, including her childhood, youth, and the years of darkness she had endured after becoming Awakened. As this process unfolds, the core of her being slowly took shape despite persistent gaps in her understanding of herself. Although the abyssal expanse of memories remains daunting, she confronts it as an adversary instead of prey.[48]

In the dark ocean of glistening memories bestowed upon the Lord of Shadows by Weaver, the Demon of Fate, Cassie used the tentacles of her Will to actively search and seize the memories she needed: as she regarded the revolving galaxy of memories and identified the necessary shards, the tentacles of her Will shot forward with flawless agility, catching the fleeting memories as they flashed by, allowing her to piece together the start and the middle so she could learn the end, all while straining her Will to keep the vast vortex at bay and racing against the spreading Corruption that threatened to turn her into Torment once again.[49]

Her Will also functions as a defensive and stabilizing force capable of shielding her consciousness from overwhelming psychic and metaphysical pressures.[50]

Her Will allowed her to contend with overwhelming and incomprehensible forces within the dark ocean of memories. When the word oblivion surfaced in her mind, the memories responded, coalescing into a vast vortex that surged toward her like a river. Overwhelmed by the magnitude of the flow, Cassie's consciousness began to fracture, but she called upon her Will as a shield, stemming the flow of memories and pushing them away from herself, saving herself from complete mental collapse.[50]

Her Will functions not only as a defensive mechanism but also as a means of interaction with the memories themselves, enabling her to perceive the nature and structure of realities and events that transcend ordinary comprehension. Through her Will, she witnessed visions of countless realms—the domains of the Sun God, Storm God, Beast God, Heart God, and Shadow God—as well as the formation of the Dream Realm, the Nightmare Spell, and the catastrophic birth of a titanic humanoid being. Despite the unbearable mental and emotional strain these revelations imposed, Cassie’s Will allowed her to selectively endure, extract critical insights, and disengage from memories that threatened to overwhelm her. In this passage, her Will exemplifies both the capacity for profound perception across multiple planes of existence and the resilience required to withstand the immense pressure of transcendent knowledge.[50]

Background

When Cassie first appeared, she was sitting quietly on the bench, in the deserted corner of the Awakened Academy hall, where no one was willing to approach. She was surrounded by an invisible, but almost palpable aura of death due to her being blind. She became blind after she survived her First Nightmare which was judged to be a death sentence by the Academy.[24] She was given last place in the rankings by the Academy.[25] She still had her mom and dad who were worried for her.[51]
