Chapter 188 Of Heaven And Hell


Athena (aka Effie) is an experienced huntress in Dark City. She later joined Nephis' cohort.[1] She is also one of the important characters in Shadow Slave.

Appearance

Debut - Dream Realm

Effie is a tall and attractive young woman. She had hazel eyes and beautiful brown hair, tied in a simple braid. Her build is extremely athletic, with perfect lean muscles rolling under the dewy olive skin with each movement.[17]

During the Beach Episode, Sunny described her as if a sculpture of an ancient goddess come to life. She has a tan and lean body that looked like it was cut from stone.[18]

After the cohort's three-month journey, she remained the same except leaner, her robust musculature not covered by a gram of fat. Her archaic bronze armor was dented all over but somehow held together.[19]

At the start of the Siege, Effie stood out among the Sleepers with her tall stature and lean, powerful figure. Her archaic armor glistened in the light of the rising sun, and on her shoulder, there was a flowing white cloak weaved from starlight.[20]


Awakened - Waking World

Back in the real world, she was a sickly, terribly gaunt young woman who was sitting in a wheelchair. She was unhealthily thin, with pale skin stretching over brittle bones and a strange twist to her spine. Her legs seemed lifeless and weak, tucked awkwardly on the step of her wheelchair. Her neck was clearly struggling to support the weight of her head.[12]

Awakened - Second Nightmare

A girl of about eleven, maybe twelve years of age. She had a scrawny, juvenile body that did not seem to have touched on the path to maturity yet. Her short, wild hair was of a vibrant red color, almost the same as the torn silk garments she wore. Her skin, which was supposed to be pale and white, was blue and black.[21]

The girl had obviously been often and cruelly beaten, to the point that it was hard to notice a spot free of bruises on her once tender body. The whites of her eyes were hidden by the cloudy red layer of blood that had burst from ruptured vessels, making the child look like an actual beast.[21]


Ascended - Waking World

After the second nightmare, Effie can now stand on her own. Her whole appearance had changed. The weak, unhealthy girl with pale skin stretching over brittle bones and a twisted spine was gone. Instead, she looked almost like what she was in the Dream Realm — tall, attractive, with sparkling hazel eyes and perfectly defined, lean muscles rolling under the dewy olive skin. She was radiating an infectious feeling of vitality and vigor.[22] Everything about her was screaming of strength, potency, and power. The only thing that changed was the length and cut of her hair, as well as the degree of her tan.[22]

Effie wore a white tunic with tasteful gold accents for the Valor clan ball. There was a golden laurel resting on her head, with similar bracelets and anklets accentuating its sheen. With her olive skin and toned physique, she looked like an ancient goddess.[23]

In East Antarctica, she resembled an incarnation of a beautiful war deity mainly due to her armor which she had received after slaying one of the immortal Chain Lords of the Kingdom of Hope, the Sun Prince.[10] (Refer to Effie/Memories)


Ascended - Third Nightmare

In the Third Nightmare, Effie appeared tanner and wilder covered in dirt and scratches. She still had that dewy olive skin, perfectly sculpted, lean muscles, tall and beautiful figure, and long brown hair. She wore a crude garment made of shark skin. Her entire build was different, with a round, protruding belly. It was revealed that she is pregnant.[24]

Transcendent

Effie was still the same tall, beautiful, and vibrant woman Sunny met in the Dark City, with her athletic body brimming with vigor and vitality and perfect lean muscles rolling under the dewy olive skin.[25]

However, her Transcendent allure made her attractive to many men and had a subtle but palpable presence about her that became more apparent. Her presence filled the air with liveliness and energy, causing a certain primal intensity to permeate her surroundings, infusing them with stimulating, spirited force.[25]

In Chapter 2800, Effie was sprawled on cold stones with iron chains binding her bloodied limbs, but there was no trace of the hale, vivacious woman she had once been. Instead, she looked like a corpse, so gaunt that it seemed a gust of wind would break her in half. Her arms were skeletal and weak, and her ribs rose like ridges beneath lifeless skin. Her stomach was so thin that it appeared to cling to her spine. Her gaunt face was sunken and bruised, with feverish eyes burning darkly within it. Her legs were like long sticks, bent awkwardly, and it did not seem like she could move them anymore. Her entire body was a ghastly image of a beast slowly consuming itself, having already digested most of its own flesh.


Supreme

In Chapter 3144, in the gathering of demigods, Athena is described as a tall woman with a stunning, alluring figure. She is tall and athletic, with perfectly defined, lean muscles rolling under her dewy olive skin and an air of infectious vitality about her. Everything about her screams of strength and vigor, and her presence makes it hard not to feel your blood flowing faster. Her alluring presence fills the air with liveliness and energy, creating a primal intensity and stimulating, spirited force around her. Now that she is Supreme, that energy has become even stronger, threatening to feel overwhelming.

Personality

Volume 1-7

There was an absolutely relaxed, comfortable, and happy expression on her face.[17] According to Sunny, she is the most contented person he'd ever seen, so laid back and cheerful.[26]

In the real world, she is a person who is lazy and has low standards of cleanliness.[27]

She was extremely intelligent, cool-headed, and cunning to be able to survive the three long years alone on the streets of the Dark City.[28]

Feeding herself is her priority most of the time.[29][28][30][31][32][21][33]

She described herself as having even less conviction than Sunny. She was fine without it and rather have a full belly.[33]

Effie, despite her carefree demeanor, had experienced heartbreak and sorrow as the rest of the cohort. Making right or wrong decisions was not easy, as every step was frightening, heavy, and difficult.[34]

Volume 10

Although Effie claimed to be an open book, Sunny described her as deceptive in a subtle way—someone who hides a hardened, battle-scarred version of herself beneath a cheerful and carefree exterior. She rejected the idea of being two separate selves, insisting that her cheerfulness and astuteness coexisted, and that her ability to enjoy life came from having endured great hardship. Despite her outward satisfaction with life and the love she felt for her family, Effie admitted to feeling desperate at times, particularly when thinking about protecting her husband and son.[35]

Despite this, her fundamental challenge lies in her contentment; unlike others driven by a desperate desire to change the world, Effie genuinely loves the life she has built and wants to protect it, not reshape it. This lack of existential dissatisfaction — of burning conviction — may be what holds her back from grasping Supremacy, which demands a will strong enough to impose one's vision onto reality itself.[35]

Volume 12

Reveal

Effie viewed the Fourth Nightmare as both a necessity and a responsibility. Reflecting on the state of Bastion, she observed that the city had prospered over the past year because its people almost never experienced nightmares, a change she attributed to the presence of Sunny’s Supreme creature, Nightmare. To her, this illustrated the profound impact a Supreme being could have on humanity and reinforced the importance of pursuing greater power through the Fourth Nightmare.[36]

She explained that her motivation stemmed from the belief that the world is ending and from her desire to become as powerful as she can and prevent it from falling apart completely. However, the decision carried a significant personal cost. As the mother of Ling, who was nearly eight years old, she acknowledged the possibility that the Nightmare could last for years or even result in her death, causing her to miss a substantial part of his childhood.[36]

Despite these concerns, Effie stated that she had already resolved to enter the Nightmare during the events in Mirage City. She explained that although missing part of Ling’s childhood felt terrible, she considered it necessary to ensure that he would have a childhood to begin with. Drawing on her and Sunny’s own experiences of having barely got to be children, she expressed a desire to protect the countless children in Bastion and ensure that none of them would have to be in a rush to grow up. She also expressed hope that, while the Dream Realm was not a paradise yet, it could be made into one through continued effort.[36]

Battle Ability

Effie is a powerful close-range fighter and a member of the War Maidens of the Red Sect. Her Transcendent form gives her a colossal size, which is a tremendous advantage in most battles. However, her large size can also become a vulnerability against exceptionally powerful opponents, allowing her to dismiss her Transcendent form and take the shape of a normal, though very tall, woman.[37]

She fights with a spear and possesses exceptional speed and reflexes, allowing her to react to extremely fast attacks. She can dismiss her Transcendent form almost instantly, leaving behind a whirlwind of white essence sparks as she changes into her smaller form.[37]

Effie learned the truth about the War Maidens and the Red Sect's covenant during her Second Nightmare. The covenant forbids War Maidens from surrendering alive in battle, requiring them to fight to the death. Their first defeat is usually their death. The War Maidens strive to forge themselves in the image of the original female avatar of War God, rather than serving as brides of the deity.[37]

Effie's abilities also extend beyond combat. She has a remarkable capacity to inspire loyalty, strengthen morale, and give hope to those around her. Her presence can give soldiers strength and encourage them to continue fighting even in desperate circumstances.[37]

Background

When Effie was new in the Dark City, the strongest hunter at that time took her under her wing and went down to the catacombs with an entire party. But in the end, only she survived.[38]

From living in the Dark City for several years, she grew a unique opinion of the Dream Realm compared to most Sleepers and Awakened. While many see the Dream Realm as hell, Effie sees the Dream Realm as the paradise humans deserve. On Earth, many are dying of hunger and poor living conditions just because of what humans have done to Earth. Yet the Nightmare Spell came and provided worthy people powers, which in turn provided food and better living conditions to those who needed it. In a way, the spell is a savior to humanity. Effie says that this is the reason why she is always so cheerful.[39]

Back in the real world, she had always been a sick, terribly gaunt young woman.[12] After Awakening, her body recovered enough to be able to move her hands. She received invitations from Clan Valor and Clan Song, which rubs her the wrong way when before they didn't lift a finger when she really needed it.[40]

Effie, despite her position as the Steward of Bastion and of the entire East, chose not to reside in the main keep of the great castle, finding it too stuffy. Instead, she remained in her original residence—a large estate that had once been on the outskirts of the city. Due to Bastion's rapid expansion, her estate was now located in what had become the very heart of the city. Effie's presence in the area, as the renowned "Raised by Wolves," transformed the neighborhood into one of the most prestigious and desirable locations in Bastion. The value of land in the area had dramatically increased, and the extensive property she had originally claimed during the time it was a desolate wasteland had become extremely valuable. The surrounding environment had changed significantly; the wasteland was gone, replaced by neat streets, green trees, and tasteful manors hidden behind tall hedges and elegant fences. The residents of the area were affluent and powerful individuals, many of whom were high-Rank Awakened from either old Legacy clans or newly established Transcendent families.[3]
An imposing spear approximately three meters long. Though it lacked any unnecessary ornamentation, its design was strikingly beautiful—solemn and resplendent. Forged to appear as if made from pure gold, the spear radiated a sense of overwhelming fierceness and immense weight, commanding awe and reverence from anyone who saw it. Its long spearhead was crafted for both piercing and severing, while the flawlessly straight shaft appeared indestructible. Upon its unveiling, the atmosphere changed: the scent of a lightning storm filled the air, and arcs of electricity danced across the grass. The spear felt ancient, immensely powerful, and holy, with the very world seeming to respond to its presence by becoming brighter and more solemn.[58] (More information on Divine Relics page)
