Sorcery is a structured method of achieving a predictable result usually with the help of soul essence.[1]

It is also the ability to guide and shape hidden energies, most often that of souls, to express one's will upon the world.[2] It is the very means used to create the type of abilities that existed in the realm of Aspects.[3]

Types

Sorcery followed a framework of laws and principles to shape the world, usually by manipulating soul essence.[4]

There are four general types of creating sorcery:

Daemonic Sorcery

Spellweave

Weaving

The spellweave is believed to be Weaver's own sorcery. The Spell itself was created from it, as well as all the magical items that the Spell gifted to the Awakened — Memories and Echoes. This was the magic that all humans knew, and most believed to be the only kind there is.[3]

From countless ethereal diamond strings, the weave formed an infinitely complex pattern.[5][6]

Primitive Spellweave/Diamond Weave

The more primitive version of weave and the same type of alien weave that was seen within the Echo of Stone Saint[7][3] and the walls of Ebony Tower[3] . This type of Sorcery belonged to the Prince of the Underworld.[3]

It is a primitive and crude system of adamantine threads. These strings were seemingly made from diamond and entirely corporal.[5][7]

Runic Sorcery

Main article: Runic Sorcery

Hope's magic is also known as Runic sorcery, or Runic magic. This is the most common type of sorcery used by mortals without a true understanding of its nature. This type of sorcery is used with Sorcery of Names.

Divine Miracles

Divine sorcery is a manifestation of a deity's will. It is a much more ancient form of sorcery. One cannot even begin to guess the tricks involved in divine sorcery, as it primarily creates miracles, not magic. The existence of the mystical circle and the Chain Lords' fate string is a result of divine sorcery.[4]

The miraculous creation of Sun God:[3]

The black knife had no weave hiding beneath its surface, instead, it was full of blinding radiance, as if encompassing a boundless ocean of soul essence, with a single String of Fate placed into the pristine light as it folded on itself endlessly and formed a never-ending circle.[3]

Trivia

  • Sunny's inability to connect to the Spell at the start of Second Nightmare was the result of the clash between two types of daemonic sorcery: the Spell which had been created by Weaver was being interfered with by the enchantments created by Hope.[10]
  • Hope was speculated to be the source of Runic magic or the user of it.[3]
  • The deific miracle of the Sun God, the obsidian knife, and later, the wooden one he had used to kill Solvane, proved that one didn't have to base their magic on a weave of some sort. This was just the unique way Weaver cast his, and their brother followed.[3]
  • According to Noctis, there is no such thing called sorcery but there are ways to twist the underlying laws of the world to produce some effect, desirable or not.[1]
  • Sunny is an aspiring sorcerer.[11]
  • Learning how to weave runes required both a good understanding of weaves and a deep knowledge of the runic language the Spell used.[12]
  • The weaves created by the Spell were infinitely ingenious and near perfect, making them unimaginably complex and intricate. Sunny had to spend weeks studying the simplest ones, but he had grown skilled enough to discern the general flow of the former.[13]
  • The Sorcery of Names and the Sorcery of Runes have a positive correlation, both relying on invoking True Names.[14]
  • There are three ways to repair an enchantment: using a key, being a locksmith, and brute force. The key would be the detailed knowledge of the original enchantment. The second way is to be a locksmith who understands the structure of any lock on a deep level. That way, you can pick it up without a key. The third way is brute force, one needs valuable material that could sometimes substitute skill.[15]
