“ [Once an elegant dance, now a deadly battle art. This mysterious style was created by the treacherous Lost From Light after witnessing a graceful slave dancing with her shadows. Who else could have taken something so beautiful and turned it into something so vile?] ” ― Spell's Description of Shadow Dance,
Chapter 219 Relics of the Past
Shadow Dance is a shapeless and insidious battle art tailor-made by Sunny for himself.[1] It is his Aspect Legacy.[2]
Description
Sunny fluidly shifted from one style to another, his movements simultaneously firm and flowing, sharp and gentle, clear and unpredictable. The Soul Serpent flowed from one form to another, too, as insidious and shapeless as the person who wielded it. It was as though Sunny was performing a strange, graceful, viciously complicated dance.
…His three shadows danced with him, moving swiftly on the ceramic plates of the armored floor. — Sunny trying to cement the knowledge of the battle styles he had absorbed, Chapter 539 Out of Reach |
Concept
The foundation of the shadow style was insidious, shapeless, and ever-changing. Its core concept was to steal that which made the enemy strong and use it to destroy them. One had to learn how to behave like a shadow to master this style.[3]
Origin
While the battle style entrusted to him by Nephis was versatile and deadly, and the technique of the Stone Saint was indomitable and oppressive, they were not his own. No matter how much he practiced them, he felt that there was something missing. Individuality. Only by creating a style of his own would he be able to become equal to the best fighters out there. Until then, he would always be just an imitator.[4]
After countless spars against Stone Saint, he finally noticed his shadow's movements. While exactly like his own, there was a very slight, almost imperceptible difference. The divergence between him and his shadow was consistent and harmonious, hinting at a deeper meaning of which his shadow had a battle style of its own.[4]
In their expedition to reach the edges of Forgotten Shore, Sunny was finally able to understand the foundation of the elusive shadow style. That was when he was observing the motions of two shadows that followed Nephis during her mock fight with Caster. The foundation of the shadow style was indeed insidious, shapeless, and ever-changing. Its core concept was to steal that which made the enemy strong and use it to destroy them. To master that style, he had to learn how to behave like a shadow.[5]
When he finally figured it out, for the first time inside the Dream Realm he dreamt. The dream he found himself in did not belong to him. Instead, it belonged to the nameless temple slave whose role he had assumed during the First Nightmare. The original child of shadows. The vision was his memory.[6]
In his dream, he saw a young woman dancing. The young woman weaved a beautiful pattern with her movements, their cadence and nature were simultaneously firm and flowing, sharp and gentle, clear and unpredictable. She danced alone but also with seven partners, effortlessly controlling both her own body and the seven shadows cast by it. Her dance was insidious, shapeless, and ever-changing. He recognized these movements. They were the same as how his shadow moved. This was the source and origin of the battle style he wanted to create. This was Shadow Dance.[6]
Runes, Progress & Legacy Relics
Mastery
Shadow Dance is a battle art invented by Sunny, which aims to steal the strength of the enemy and use it to destroy them.[7] Sunny has mastered four of the Shadow Dance steps, but three remain elusive. The first four steps involve sensing a being's essence to shadow its mind, skill, and overall form.[8]
- Its first step was mastered during a battle with Nephis, allowing Sunny to understand and mimic the enemy's battle style.[7]
- The second step was continued by absorbing the styles of countless Awakened, allowing Sunny to shadow unfamiliar battle styles faster and more easily.[7]
- The third step expanded on the first two by redefining battle styles, including Nightmare Creatures in the enemy ranks he shadowed. But this step was more about Sunny's own self-discovery, as he had to let go of his sense of self to shadow things innately different from him. The third mastery greatly improved Sunny's ability to shadow enemies and perceive the flow of essence within them. However, Shadow Dance was a double-edged sword, as Sunny could easily get lost in the form of an adversary, forgetting himself forever. The best defense against this risk was his True Name, which served as the anchor of his soul.[7]
- The fourth step allows Sunny to delve deeper into the physical structure of creatures, allowing him to shadow them more perfectly. However, he cannot replicate their Attributes, Aspects, and mystical powers.[8]
- The fifth step of Shadow Dance should encompass the ability to shadow a being's Attributes.[8]
This raises questions about the final form of Shadow Dance, which should include the ability to become a true shadow of a being, including their mystical powers and authorities.[8]
- The sixth step of Shadow Dance appears to involve the channeling of foreign concepts.[9]
First Step
Learning Process
Trying to learn the secrets of his own shadow, though unable to peer into the depths of its battle art, he was slowly beginning to get a feel for it. His shadow was more treacherous, fluid, and malleable than he was. There was a hint of a graceful cadence to its movements that lacked in his as though it was performing a dance.[10]
Sunny slowly forms a set of moves to train. These exercises helped condition his body and mind, making them adaptable and malleable like shadows.[11]
Mastery
Second Step
Learning Process
Sunny's goal was to absorb as many styles as possible, reinforce the foundation of Shadow Dance and make it more efficient.[13]
Not all battle styles were made the same, some were simple and straightforward, while others were complex and unique. The more unique a style was, the harder it was for Sunny to gain insight into its principles. His ability to peer into the very essence of a style is based on his own talent, mastery, and sensitivity to shadows. So, he had been working diligently to create a sizable library of simpler styles, which would in turn improve his capacity to discern the patterns of more complicated ones with sufficient speed. After all, all styles were constructed out of the same basic elements.[13]
The more basic patterns he knew, the easier it was to understand various styles on the fly. He hoped to achieve the next level of mastery over his elusive battle art this way. Moreover, at the highest levels of Awakened battle skill, styles were not only about physical movements and mindset but they weaved unique patterns of essence control into the technique which Sunny couldn't perceive and was only able to infer from indirect clues.[13]
Note: Most of the mentioned battle styles Sunny absorbed while learning is on Dreamscape and Fifth Annual Dream Tournament
Mastery
Third Step
Learning Process
Sunny decided to expand the purview of his battle style to include not only shadowing humans but also Nightmare Creatures.[15]
Being able to shadow the Nightmare Creatures not only enhanced his battle style, but also made them more predictable, and thus less dangerous. Understanding how the Corrupted fought and what impulses guided them was much harder than deciphering even the most sophisticated battle style. Their minds were perverted, bizarre, and alien to everything he had ever known.[15]
Note: After learning what needed to achieve the third step, all Nightmare Creatures Sunny encountered at this point was also shadowed by him during his battles.
Mastery
In the end, to attain mastery, using shadow dance on countless humans and creatures before, he peered even deeper during the fight with the stygian steed. For a moment, it was as though he became the stygian steed, clearly knowing how it was going to kill.[16]
Mastering the third step of Shadow Dance was tied to the fact that Sunny had lived through countless nightmares and lost himself becoming truly shapeless and formless, forgetting himself and turning into other people completely. As a result of the breakthrough, Sunny's ability to recognize and gain insight into patterns of combat techniques increased, allowing him to understand and predict not only the movement and behavior of enemies but also intricately sense the flow of essence through their bodies as well as being able to predict their thoughts.[17] Shadow Dance now allowed Sunny to sense the movement of the mystical energy through the bodies of his opponents.[18]
Flaw
Starting from the third step of Shadow Dance, the elusive battle art was starting to be dangerous not only to his enemies but to Sunny himself. There was a risk of losing himself and becoming someone else forever.[17]
The risk of losing himself to the formlessness of Shadow Dance could be simply resolved by a simple thought exercise. He only needed to keep in mind his True Name. It always brought him back, no matter how lost he was.[19]
Fourth Step
Learning Process
Sunny had previously used Shadow Dance to read abominations, but never tried to manifest himself into one of them due to it being easily to get lost in that state, maybe forever. He needed to maintain his sense of self while denying it, is possibly the fourth step of Shadow Dance. This involved becoming formless in mind, body, and soul, becoming infinitely malleable like all shadows.[20]
Mastery
The fourth step was about becoming the enemy, both in thought and in flesh.[21]
The fourth step involves breaking Sunny's mind of rigid constraints to make it shapeless and adaptable, allowing his physical form to follow suit. Sunny invented Shadow Shell and Shadow Incarnation in Antarctica, providing the tools for mastering the fourth mastery. However, it wasn't until the battle with Daeron of the Twilight Sea that he combined these elements into a cohesive whole, allowing Sunny to grasp the essence of any form and shape, making the prospect of becoming any creature limitless.[7]
Some forms take less time, while others take longer. The more forms he learns, the easier it becomes to create the next one. However, the fourth step is dangerous, as changing his form too drastically and too often could lead to losing the connection to his own.[21]
Fifth Step
Learning Process
Sunny guessed that fusing with his Shadows in shadow form could guide him to the next step of Shadow Dance. With Serpent in its Soul Weapon form, he wonders if studying Memories by fusing with them could improve his weaving and potentially forge a soulbound sword.[22]
Sunny's theory that mastering the remaining steps of Shadow Dance would allow him to shadow others' Attributes and Aspects and profane powers of Nightmare Creatures was not entirely based on pure conjecture. However, his intuition has changed since being cut off from fate. A previously unrelated piece of information corroborated his theory.[23]
- The Mad Prince, Sunny's past self, had descended into the abyss of Corruption and formed the Titan Core in the Tomb of Ariel. Sunny, facing the slow process of building a new Shadow Core, suspected that the Mad Prince had slain his own Shadows to become a Titan. The Mad Prince was able to visit Ananke in her dreams without Nightmare and instructed her where to meet Sunny and Nephis unless he had learned how to shadow the [Dreamwalker] Attribute. In hindsight, Mad Prince spent hundreds of years in the Tomb of Ariel, and one path remained open to him, his mastery of weaving, which led to the creation of the Estuary Key. He could also have mastered more steps of Shadow Dance because Ananke called him a Sword Saint for a reason.[23]
Serpent's ability to take on any shadow in his soul allowed him to study its shapes in depth. This allowed him to experience unity with various beings, including Dormant Beasts and Corrupted Terrors. However, the challenge remained in learning the essence of Serpent's forms, which he had previously learned through Shadow Dance. The risk of losing himself in the formlessness was even more severe, as he was fusing with the alien beings entirely. Despite this, Sunny managed to maintain a strong sense of self while experiencing unity with Saint and Fiend, who were born of his Aspect and dwelled within his soul. However, when Serpent used [Formless], he was overwhelmed by the feeling of otherness. Being banished from the Nightmare Spell and losing his True Name made life difficult for Sunny, who believed he had finally adapted to his fateless existence. Now, an alluring opportunity presented itself, revealing his deficiency once again.[24]
Mastery
The fifth step of Shadow Dance is the ability to shadow an enemy's powers and Attributes—not just mimic their form, but also emulate their essence by fusing with Sunny's Shadows and augmenting those of his Domain, including humans and shades. However, mastering this step requires a stable identity anchored by a True Name, which Sunny lacks, making it too dangerous to fully assume another's essence without risking the loss of his own self.[25]
In Chapter 2404, Sunny is attempting to master the Fifth Step of Shadow Dance which requires more than just mimicry—it demands a complete transformation of body, mind, and spirit. Rather than simply copying someone's appearance, Sunny must fully internalize and become the essence of another being. To do this, he chooses to transform into a Stone Saint, specifically based on Saint, his first and most loyal Shadow.[26]
The Stone Saint form is ideal for Sunny due to his deep connection with Saint, who has fought beside him for nearly a decade. Saint has saved his life many times, taught him in battle, and remained a constant companion. Sunny knows her better than almost anyone else. Additionally, he has spent years empowering and studying her through his abilities, allowing him to understand the Stone Saint physiology and mindset intimately. His connection to Stone Saints is further reinforced by his possession of the Jade Shell and Jade Mantle, inherited remnants of Nether's power, which are already a part of him.[26]
Sixth Step
Learning Process
The sixth step of Shadow Dance appears to involve channeling the essence of a foreign concept, not just mimicking a physical form or ability but embodying something deeper—an abstract nature or affinity. Sunny stumbled upon this potential new step during a desperate battle against the Wolf. In the heat of combat, he instinctively channeled a concept—the Hunter—to survive. This wasn't random; it was informed by his deep understanding of the enemy and his own flexible nature. Due to the flexible, formless nature of his Will—described as subtle and insidious, just like a shadow—Sunny is uniquely suited to channel diverse concepts. His adaptability makes him capable of embodying different essences, which may not be possible for others.[9]
The key feature of this sixth step seems to be assuming the fundamental nature or Will of another being, going beyond appearance or power to become aligned with an entirely different concept. Sunny was able to do it successfully because the Hunter's nature was not foreign to him; he was already a skilled hunter himself. However, he realizes that this power is dangerous without a True Name to anchor his identity. Without that anchor, channeling foreign concepts could cause him to lose himself—especially if the concepts conflict with his own spirit. He worries that embodying too many opposing concepts might lead to madness or the loss of his humanity.[9]
It was in Chapter 2368; Sunny had not yet mastered the fifth step—shadowing the powers and Attributes of others—due to the absence of his True Name. And yet, he had already uncovered the secret of the sixth step.[9]Direction of Shadow Dance at higher steps
Shadow Dance is Sunny's Aspect Legacy, whose mastery is divided into multiple steps. Each mastered step normally reveals its own essence, but Sunny's understanding of the higher stages (Fifth Step and beyond) became "mixed and entangled" because he learned them without the assistance of the Nightmare Spell.[27]
After recovering his True Name, Sunny's mastery advanced significantly. His True Name acted as an anchor that stabilized his sense of self, allowing him to explore Shadow Dance more deeply without the same risk of losing himself.[27]
- This advancement was demonstrated through his ability to mirror Nephis's Soul Flame. Previously, when using the Mirror of Truth on Aletheia's Island, the copied flames were lightless and black, reflecting the true nature of his own soul. After his recent progress, however, the mirrored flames became pure and radiant, indicating that Shadow Dance had evolved beyond merely reproducing the outward function of an ability. Instead, it enabled him to shadow the target's soul and the underlying essence of its power, which proved essential for reproducing abilities that required light.[27]
- Sunny also revised his understanding of the Sixth Step. He initially believed that it centered on channeling the concept of a being and reshaping his Will to perfectly imitate that being's Will or spirit. He later concluded that these processes were only methods used to reach the next stage rather than the true objective of the Sixth Step. He further reasoned that if this interpretation had been correct, the step would have been effective only against deities, contradicting the inherent versatility of shadows, which are meant to follow all beings.[27]
- According to Sunny's current understanding, the Fifth Step is intended to allow him to shadow the Attributes of other beings, while the Sixth Step is intended to shadow their Aspects and powers. Because both stages were learned without the Nightmare Spell's assistance, their functions became mixed together. As a result, the Fifth Step was complete but still felt incomplete in practice, enabling him to copy many—but not all—Attributes. Likewise, the Sixth Step had only partially revealed itself and remained unfinished.[27]
- These limitations were reflected in his abilities. Sunny could shadow Saint, but was unable to wield true darkness. Similarly, he could shadow Nephis, but could not reproduce her Fire itself, despite successfully imitating the essence of her Soul Flame.[27]
- Based on these shortcomings, Sunny concluded that the missing element was likely the Seventh Step of Shadow Dance. He believed this final step would complete his Aspect Legacy by unifying the Fifth and Sixth Steps, which he regarded as inseparable parts of a larger whole. However, he had not yet discovered the nature or function of the Seventh Step.[27]
Applications
Sunny's Aspect Abilities
- Main articles: Shadow Shell § Forms, and Shadow Incarnation (Tangible Shadow Form) § Shapeshift
Shadow Dance enables Sunny to observe a person or creature and learn the very essence of their style and physicality, then shadow them. This knowledge allows him to understand the structure of the body and force shadows into that form. By understanding the body's structure and instincts, Sunny can translate his power through the shadows, building it around himself like a shell using Shadow Manifestation. This allows him to assume the shape of a Nightmare Creature, similar to Soul Serpent's ability [Formless]. However, Sunny could not inherit the creature's attributes and abilities, but the physical form itself was enough.[28] Like shadowing a memory of a creature instead of the creature itself.[29]
Shadowspawn Devil
Sunny felt comfortable shaping shadows into the Shadow Devil by summoning memories of the Second Nightmare into his mind and used Shadow Dance to bring them to life. The demands were high because he needed to know the shape of the shadow shell in startling detail. However, Sunny's instinctual knowledge of the Shadowspawn allowed him to transform himself into a creature instead of controlling the construct consciously.[29]
Sunny's Will
In Chapter 2362, as Supreme Rank, Sunny managed to challenge a being of superior stature through the transformation of his Will, empowered by his mastery of Shadow Dance. In that critical moment, he did not attempt to overshadow the Wolf directly — instead, he invoked the memory of a primal hunter from the era of the Wolf, a vision etched deep into his soul. Drawing on his vast experience of becoming others through Shadow Dance, Sunny channeled the mindset, instincts, and essence of that ancient predator. His imagination became reality through sheer force of Will. The transformation was not physical alone; it was spiritual — he willed himself into a different being, reshaping his inner self to embody the ruthless, territorial fury of a tribal chieftain whose kin had been slaughtered.
Shadowing Soul Serpent
Sunny was able to shadow Soul Serpent by keeping his identity from becoming lost with the help of the Chain while channeling Serpent's essence and assuming its form. The form of Soul Serpent was described as the opposite of what those words usually meant—rather than a fixed shape, it was a state of utter formlessness inherent to the shadows, which was the very reason shadows could take any shape. Sunny found it surprisingly easy to assume that shapeless form, because there were a lot of parallels between him and Serpent, as well as between the powers they wielded. This connection existed because Serpent was unique among Sunny's Shadows. Unlike the others, which Sunny had earned through slaying their originals, Serpent had been given to Sunny by the Nightmare Spell as a reward for mastering the first step of Shadow Dance. It was a remnant from the times when Shadow God ruled the Realm of Death and had been born a Shadow Creature, instead of becoming one after destruction. Because of this, Serpent was closer to the ideal of a true shadow than anyone else, while Sunny, having inherited his Aspect from a divine shadow, was already walking the path toward becoming such a creature himself.[30]
- Because of this affinity, Sunny managed to shadow Serpent with surprising ease, and it almost felt natural. Unlike when he had tried to replicate Slayer, the feeling of something vital missing did not trouble him. By channeling Soul Serpent's power, Sunny turned himself into a weapon capable of slaying deities. His nebulous body became the perfect vessel for channeling death, allowing his ability to express his Will to become much more refined and pure. Though his Will itself did not grow more potent, the same effort produced far greater results, affecting the Vile Thieving Bird's vitality far more effectively than before. Sunny then shaped himself into an onyx serpent, coiling around the Vile Thieving Bird and sinking his fangs into the wound on its neck. Through this form, Death flowed through them into the very heart of its soul, poisoning the six nodes of revolting darkness pulsing there like abyssal cores. Even as his own nebulous body had become tattered and small, nearing collapse, the Vile Thieving Bird's vitality was swiftly drained as the poison of Death Will permeated it, weakening it enough that it finally became afraid of him.[30]
Shadow Weave
- Main article: Shadow Weave
Through Shadow Weave, Sunny finally understood the true nature of shadow essence. Unlike soul essence, which is the essence of life, shadow essence is the essence of death. However, shadow essence is not merely a force of destruction. Being formless, it can assume the form of virtually any type of energy. Sunny witnessed it becoming indistinguishable from soul essence before returning to its original state and realized it could also become heat, kinetic force, electricity, matter, and potentially even more esoteric manifestations such as true darkness or nothingness.[31]
Most naturally, Shadow Weave allowed Sunny to transform his own essence into shadows, making him their source rather than merely their ruler.[31]
The malleable nature of shadow essence greatly improved Sunny's ability to master Shadow Dance. Since perfectly shadowing another being requires replicating the shape of its soul, the ability to reshape his own essence made that process significantly easier. Sunny considered this a natural continuation of the progress he had already made after shadowing Nephis' Soul Flame.[31]
Trivia
- Shadow Dance Mastery: [5/7]
- First Mastery: Succeeded in the middle of the bloody battle against Nephis.[12][32]
- Second Mastery: Succeeded after the duel with Morgan (Fifth Annual Dream Tournament).[14]
- Third Mastery: Succeeded after the fight with Nightmare.[33]
- Fourth Mastery: Succeeded after the fight with Azure Serpent.[34][21]
- Fifth Mastery: Succeeded after Sunny assumed the complete transformation of his body, mind, and spirit into a Stone Saint.
- After Sunny lost his True Name[35], he struggled to master Shadow Dance so he focused on developing a personal, transcendent battle art for the past four years. He had formulated its principles and tempered them in battles against powerful opponents.[36]
- Sunny couldn't receive Aspect Legacy Relics after being banished from the Spell.[37]
- When Sunny faced Revel and her true darkness, losing most of his powers and relying on his Shadows to prevail led to discovering a new facet of his Aspect that helped defeat Ki Song's daughter. Sunny believed that augmenting his Shadows and Memories could enhance his Shadow Dance and weaving skills.[8]
- In Chapter 2408, Sunny nearly lost himself in the form and mind of a Stone Saint and also nearly killing Kai in the process.
- In Chapter 2980, Sunny confirmed through his runes that he had mastered the Fifth Step of Shadow Dance, but had not yet mastered the Sixth Step. Mastering a step of Shadow Dance grants a corresponding Legacy Relic; however, Sunny’s Fifth Step Legacy Relic was missing. The runes indicated that the relic had already been "claimed", but it was no longer in his possession because the Vile Thieving Bird had stolen it along with his other treasures.
