Cause of Death
Sir Gilead, who had remained impervious to Asterion's plague due to his uncompromising loyalty and refusal to submit, was attacked without restraint by Seishan's sisters because he was incapable of becoming a subject for the Hunger Domain, and therefore useless to Asterion. Though he broke through and advanced toward Seishan, his wounds worsened with each step as minor lacerations turned into grievous bleeding until he collapsed at her feet, his sword falling from his grasp as a puddle of blood spread around his still body.[3]

Overview

“ Sometimes, I forget...How much I loathe you and your family. ”

― Gilead to Morgan,
Chapter 1151 See no Evil

Gilead is a direct retainer of clan Valor, a formidable warrior who is also quite pleasant to be around in person.[1]

Appearance

A man in lustrous armor wielding a lance that seemed to be made of clear water.[2]

In Chapter 2067, his lustrous armor was covered in dust and lost its sheen. His usually clean-shaven face was covered by short beard. His skin had turned darker with tan and his fiercely blue eyes squinting against the merciless radiance of the grey sky.

Personality

He can remain calm and composed even when facing an unseen Titan.[2] He is somewhat of an outlier among the Saints. He is known for his straightforward nature, embodying qualities such as honor, valiance, and loyalty, resembling a noble knight.[1][4] A man whose loyalty and noble character were a legend in and of themselves.[4] He took his oaths very seriously, pledging unwavering allegiance to the King of Swords, demonstrating his steadfast commitment to his duties.[5]

After spending some time with him in the Nightmare Desert, Sunny suspected that he had more to him than blind loyalty.[4]

Summer Knight was a benevolent warrior who valued loyalty. He was a likable figure in the Nightmare Desert. He had given away his Memories to Nephis to help her conquer the Third Nightmare. But Sunny was uneasy about Summer Knight's devotion to the King of Swords as he had a personal issue with loyalty, as it was often seen as a noble virtue. He compared Summer Knight to Harus, the zealous servant of the ruler of the Bright Castle, but they felt too different, making him conflicted.[6]

Gilead explained that his loyalty is rooted in a personal choice, independent of external compulsion or his alleged Flaw. He dismisses the notion that his unwavering commitment to the King is a product of his inability to choose otherwise, emphasizing that it stems from a deliberate decision made long ago when he chose to be a knight of Clan Valor. Gilead believes that true loyalty is about honoring oaths regardless of changing circumstances or personal feelings toward those to whom the oath is given. For him, the character or worthiness of the King is irrelevant; what matters is staying true to the promises he made, as they are among the few aspects of life he can control.[7]

Gilead asserts that if keeping one's word depended on fluctuating sentiments, it would hold little value. His perspective exemplifies his steadfast nature and chivalric ideals, underscoring his belief in the integrity of personal responsibility over external judgment.[7]

Aspect, Abilities & Flaw

The brooks, rivers, and lakes around him seemed to turn into weapons, where streams of water rose from them and flew in the air like whips.[2]

Transformation Ability

When he assumed his Transcendent form, he was made of light.[8] An ethereal figure that seemed to be made of pure sunlight. It was same human-like figure and height as Gilead but physical attacks simply pass through the light without wounding Summer Knight's shining body.[9]

Background

Broken Sword died shortly after Summer Knight became a Sleeper. Before that, he was someone of an idol of his. He grew to admire him more after hearing stories from older retainers of Clan Valor, who had a good relationship with Broken Sword and Smile of Heaven—the comrades of the patriarch's son, Anvil.[6]

History

Trivia

  • He and Amiran were once member of the same cohort.[10]
  • In Chapter 1151, he expressed how he loathes Morgan and her family.
  • He has a mount that was ripped apart by Silent Stalker.[9]

  • He was one of the strongest and most renowned Transcendent warriors of the old generation. He was the personification of what people thought a Saint should be.[4]
  • In Chapter 1877, Gilead told the Lord of Shadows that he admired Broken Sword and how Anvil and Smile of Heaven were childhood friends hearing the stories from old retainers of Clan Valor. According to him, Nephis make impossible things possible, like her father.
  • In Chapter 2068, it was mentioned that Gilead despised the King he serve and his family. He had come to resent Anvil after a while, the monarch he is loyal to, but his loyalty had nothing to do with his flaw and was simply his choice.[7]
  • Gilead chose exile after the Throne War.[12]
  • Gilead was the most impervious to Asterion's plague, as his single-minded and uncompromising loyalty to the king he had sworn to serve prevented him from submitting to any other authority.[13]
