True darkness had its own elemental force, one that was both independent and opposed to light. It was different from light and shadows. Instead of a simple lack of light, pure darkness was a rival of light. Since light and shadows always went hand in hand, it was also the enemy of shadows.[1]
True darkness was the natural enemy of shadows[2] and of reflections[3].
Description
Sunny had always viewed darkness as a billowing cloud of nothingness, an impenetrable black barrier that was uniform and featureless obscuring the world from his senses. In Shadow Saint's perception, darkness was rich and full of nuanced. It flowed all around, its fluid torrents creating beautiful patterns in the air, moving and changing like a living creature.[4]
Encounters
- Dark Sea
- Forsaken Knight who can hide in the darkness[5]
- True Darkness in an old tunnel in Antarctica[6] (Refer to Heart of Darkness)
- Hollow Mountains
Differences between Shadow and True Darkness
Shadows were made from the absence of light. They were manifestations of emptiness and shared more in common with light than they did with darkness. True Darkness, on the other hand, was its own entity.[7]
Origin
The Hollow Mountains are a scar left by the creature's death, and most of true darkness remains below them. Nether made his home in this area, but it was not entirely empty during his rule. There were many others living in the darkness.[8]
Trivia
- Sunny cannot detect anything that came from true darkness:
- He did not detect Forsaken Knight when the latter stepped forward from the darkness and pierced him.[5]
- He cannot see through the old tunnel in Antarctica due to it being drowned by true, pure elemental darkness.[6]
- Awakened cannot sleep and be transported to Dream Realm while surrounded by True Darkness in the waking world. Same with a Master, they cannot sense their anchor in Dream Realm.[9]
- The true darkness can consume the wild shadows, but it couldn't consume Sunny's own shadows, just like he couldn't command or manifest the shadows of living beings.[10]
- Drowning in the sea of darkness feels eerie and unpleasant as if something was gnawing at their soul.[10]
- Mordret did not dare venture into the hollow interior of the Hollow Mountains, where elemental darkness ruled, since utter darkness was the enemy of reflections, rendering his powers mostly useless there.[11]
