Nightmare Desert (or Battlefield of the Gods) is described as a vast desert that had been one of the last battlefields between Daemons and the Gods.[6]
Description
A blinding disc of an incandescent sun was bathing the tall dunes in a flood of immolating heat. The sands of the desert were flawlessly white, and the azure sky above him was deep and boundless like an ancient ocean, with not a single cloud blemishing its silken expanse.
Somewhere in the distance, inky-black ruins rose from beneath the sand, scattered across the desert like the bones of a half-buried giant. — Chapter 1169 Battlefield of the Gods |
During the night, the desert was not suitable for humans as there were armies of ancient dead lock in their eternal battle. It is the "Land of the Dead".[1]
The Nightmare Desert is described as a vast expanse of white sands where the Tomb of Ariel looms on the horizon but cannot be reached during the day, and at night the desert becomes a deadly battlefield where two cursed armies of undying beings, cursed by Shadow God to an eternity of endless war, fight across it.[7]
It was an immense region of the Dream Realm, no smaller than the Forgotten Shore and most likely far greater in size, consisting of an endless expanse of white dunes covered by the countless Deathless rising from beneath the sand.[8]

Temporary camp of the survivors in the Desert
It had five strangely shaped metal towers sticking out of it, arranged in a semicircle. It was much more blinding because of how the polished metal reflected the sunshine.[11]
The shortest tower was at least several dozen meters tall, and each tower varied in height. The towers were actually five fingers on a massive steel gauntlet and it was covered in sand.[11]History
Nephis' Journey
In Chapter 772, Nephis explained that after reaching the top of the Spire, the Crimson Terror was in its most vulnerable state, having absorbed countless souls and being in the middle of an arduous evolution, and with the help of the Dawn Shard, she was able to strike her down. After the creature's death, the Spire became unstable, the Gateway collapsed, and the tower itself soon followed, forcing her to barely escape the debris. The artificial sun of the Forgotten Shore was extinguished, plunging the land into absolute darkness, while the labyrinth perished and the crimson coral turned grey and slowly crumbled to dust, leaving the area lightless and desolate.[5]
Afterward, she traveled back to the Dark City, where she spent time hunting the remaining abominations and preparing for a long journey, killing many powerful Nightmare Creatures with the help of the Dawn Shard and the Nameless Sun. She considered trying to cross the Hollow Mountains, but abandoned the idea because nothing but death awaited there, so she chose another direction. Knowing that the deadly mountain chain stretched further than Ravenheart in the west and that going north would lead further away from human Citadels, she decided to travel east, hoping there might be a place where the Hollow Mountains were not as tall or unassailable, or where they ended. Leaving the Dark City, she retraced the path she had once traveled with Sunny and Cassie, avoiding the Ashen Barrow, until she reached the edges of the Forgotten Shore and crossed into a vast and terrible desert, where she once again saw the sun and the stars, marking her arrival at the desert.[5]
Trivia
- Nephis' two-year journey in Dream Realm mentioned a vast and terrible desert that had once been the site of a great battle or maybe that land had been turned into a lifeless desert by the battle instead.[5]
- In Chapter 2854, Azarax clarified that what Sunny and Nephis called the Nightmare Desert was originally referred to as the Hell of Ariel.
