Characteristics
Each Citadel was a settlement — some were small, some large enough to house thousands upon thousands of the Awakened. The population of the three Great Citadels was even higher, with hundreds of thousands of humans visiting them every day.[2]
Function
The Citadel encompasses both territory and people where authority can be spread. The true scope of the functions of Citadels is uncertain, but Saints have the ability to bind them. If a Saint serves a Sovereign and takes control of a Citadel, the Sovereign's Domain expands. The exact meaning of this binding remains unknown.[3]
Unique Qualities
- Main article: Components
All Citadels had unique qualities, called by Sunny as Components. It was unknown if these Components were innate or added by the Spell but was believed that they were built upon existing traits and made them accessible to humans. Only a Saint who bound the Citadel to their soul could command it, making use of the Components, and the Spell made the process easier for them.[4]
Components of Citadels are created by the Nightmare Spell. However, the Spell did not invent these powers entirely from scratch. Instead, in most cases, it took the innate qualities of existing places of power and rebuilt them into more usable forms for its carriers, adding a universal foundation to all of them.[5]
Most Citadels are designed to be ruled by Saints, but the Great Citadels are intended for Sovereigns, with their Components reflecting this distinction in strength and scope. Each Component is shaped by the unique nature of its associated Citadel.[5]
Initially, it was believed that Domains suppressed the seeds of Corruption within Aspirants. However, Nephis and Sunny discovered that this effect was not due to a Sovereign's personal power. Instead, it was a function of the Citadels created by the Spell. As such, Domains like the Sword and Song Domains—which were built upon Citadels—offered tangible protection against Corruption.[6]
Distinction
Not all citadels are created equal; some are special and desirable, like Bastion, Ravenheart, or Ivory Island. Each great clan fought to conquer one of the locations marked on the map in the Ebony Tower.[3]
Analyzing the locations, including Bastion, Ravenheart, and the Ivory Tower, which had been strongholds for daemons. The House of Night held the fourth, while clan Valor explored the fifth in the lethal mountains. The sixth, which Weaver did not possess, was the black pyramid, which seemed to be tied to the Chain of Nightmares.[3]
Great Citadels
Large Citadels that provide shelter to hundreds of thousands of Awakened.[7] There are currently three great Citadels ruled by the three Great Legacy Clans.[8]

Currency
The human population increased in the citadels, making the use soul shards as currency unsuitable. As a replacement, the Great Clans began minting their own coins, each containing a small amount of essence, and their value was supported by the shard treasuries each clan possessed. Many Awakened carried coins for emergencies, as they could absorb this essence.[28]
Duties in Citadels
A lot of work went into keeping human enclaves in the Dream Realm going. Apart from the obvious demand to keep watch on the walls and fight off attacking Nightmare Creatures, mundane tasks like cleaning and preparing food were also shared among the inhabitants of the Citadels.[2]
Awakened Cooks
Awakened were masters of transforming monster meat into delicious dishes, with their cuisine being as varied as its basic ingredients were limited. There were some fundamental skills taught to everyone, but each Citadel and region of the Dream Realm added its own flavor to the tradition, making each Awakened cook unique.[29]
Awakened didn't care about presentation because their meals were frequently devoured in a hurry while keeping one eye out for prowling abominations.[29]
