The Fateless are beings cut free from the tapestry of fate. Achieving Fatelessness is almost impossible, as it requires severing the strings that bind someone to destiny. Normally, weak beings can have their fate stolen but lack the significance to affect the whole tapestry, while powerful beings are too tightly bound for their fate to be removed.[1]

Fateless is what Sunny called his attribute opposite of his previous attribute, [Fated].[2]

Effects

Sunny's connection to the Nightmare Spell[3][4] and his [Fated] Attribute was gone. With [Fated] gone, the chain of Shadow Bond wrapped around his neck was gone, as well as the connection between him and Nephis. This was the reason Nephis did not recognize Sunny.[5]

When the Thieving Bird stole Sunny's fate[6], his existence was erased from the world. A fateless being could not earn a True Name which was innately tied to one's fate.[7]

Sunny became uniquely Fateless when Cassie gave him a choice that broke him free of his destined path. This made him a singular anomaly — weak enough at the time for his fate to be severed, yet significant enough that his absence disrupted the entire weave. In effect, Sunny became a weapon against fate itself.[1]

Relation to Memories

The world obscured the hole Sunny once existed, leaving no one to remember him. Important events were replaced by a vague, abstract substitute. An inconsequential stranger or a fleeting acquaintance, their face and voice erased from memory by the passage of time. People vaguely recognized that someone had been there, side by side with them but their minds naturally wandered to other matters when they focused on these memories.[8]

Traces of Existence

The same for the material traces he had left in the world. In short, not only had everyone forgotten him, but they were also unaware of having forgotten him.[8]

  • There was that famous movie "The Devil of Antarctica", inspired by his actions during the Southern Campaign. It was based on a real person, but incapable of thinking deeply about who that person was. People assumed it represented the collective heroism of countless soldiers who had perished in Antarctica.[8]
  • Sunny was officially dead and had his citizenship revoked, accounts frozen, and his house in NQSC resold.[8]

The [Fateless] Attribute, as he calls it, is thorough.[9] Sunny tried to admit to his existence to people he knew, but they cannot remember his connection to their lost memories of him. His confessions are destined to be forgotten, just like his past. Interestingly, he can admit to being Rain's brother, as her neighbor Sunny never had, and the concept of an older brother is not connected to her memories.[10]

Intuition

Previously triggered by Fated, Sunny would have been drawn to a fateful location by his intuition or simply stumbled upon it, but now, his intuition remained silent.[11]

Background

It was the result what the Thieving Bird had done to Sunny.[6]

In the heart of the Estuary, a Cursed Terror hiding behind the grave was a giant, mad, and unmistakably vile bird.[6] Its insane eyes pierced Sunny. The vile bird lunged forward, igniting its avarice and greed. Its talons plunged into Sunny's chest and dove deeper into his soul. It grabbed onto countless strings that were wrapped around him tightly, surrounding him like a chrysalis or marionette.[6] The Vile Thieving Bird stole Sunny's fate.[12]

History

In Chapter 2589, Sunny activated the enchantment to gather intelligence where Weaver's lineage is in the Night Garden. This revealed the condition of the great tapestry of fate.

As a Supreme Titan with Mind Weave when Sunny activated the enchantment what he saw was not the infinite, orderly tapestry of fate he remembered. Instead, the threads were cut, tangled, and ravaged, with the past remaining intact but the present in shambles — and the future entirely gone. The fate itself, thought to be immutable, had been destroyed. The cause was clear to him: his own defiance, and the rebellion he and Cassie had committed against destiny, had torn the tapestry apart and erased the future.[13]

Trivia

  • According to Cassie, there is a man-shaped hole in the world and to her, Sunny is like a black void, completely empty.[9]
  • After Sunny became fateless, all Awakened with high affinity to fate are suffering a reduction in their ability to discern the future.[9]
    • Cassie used to be able to see the future and that ability has been in disarray since her Third Nightmare.[9]
  • In Chapter 2719, it was mentioned that the Spirit Weave augmented Sunny's Will, making the world feel more malleable to him and altering the inherent nature of his Will. Through this change, his Will gained a second innate affinity, or significantly enhanced an existing one. While Sunny's Will had previously been primarily associated with Death, after the influence of the Spirit Weave he felt a strong connection to Fate as well. This connection was described as paradoxical, because Sunny was a fateless being.
