The Shadow Realm, the seventh of the six Divine Realms, remained unaccounted for. The Dream Realm consumed five of the six. The Shadow Realm remained a mystery, despite the existence of five Divine Realms.[1]

Note: In Chapter 1951, Sunny discovered that his Memory Shadow Lantern is a literal Gates of Shadow, Shadow referring to Shadow God. The Gates lead to Shadow God's Realm. Also, in Chapter 2123, Eurys revealed the entrances of Shadow Realm, confirming that Shadow Realm had been also consumed by Dream Realm.

Description

The Shadow Realm reveals a dark, desolate, and hauntingly beautiful wasteland, steeped in shadows. This eerie landscape grants Sunny immense power, filling him with shadow essence and enhancing his abilities. However, it’s also a perilous place that can damage or even destroy souls.[2]

Piece of Shadow's Domain

Out there in the sky, the silver disk of the moon was slowly being devoured by darkness, as if drowning in a vast and impenetrable shadow. One of its edges was already gone, and with each moment, more and more of it was being erased by the shadows. It looked…

Like an eclipse.

Noctis paled, and at the same time, Sunny suddenly felt reinvigorated. It was as though every shadow in the world had just become deeper and darker, and as one of them, he did, too. The feeling was strange and euphoric.

Actual Shadow Realm

The Shadow Realm is characterized by its lifeless expanse of dark hills stretching as far as the eye can see. There are no plants, no signs of life, and a strange stillness fills the air. The ground is covered in a soft layer of fine black dust but feels more solid than a sand dune.[3]

It is illuminated by a beautiful silver radiance resembling starlight, though no stars or moon appear above the black sky. In the distance, a massive storm brews. This "storm" consists of luminous, silver "clouds," made of soul essence. These clouds swirl and shimmer with ghostly light, casting the land in rivers of silvery radiance.[3]

There was an overwhelming presence of ancient, unfathomably deep shadows all around, which filled Sunny with a profound sense of calm and belonging. In the Shadow Realm, Sunny finds his spirit essence replenishing more swiftly, allowing him to sustain his shadow essence at an unprecedented rate.[3]

Soon, he realizes his shadow fragments are dwindling, not being drained but disintegrating into pure soul essence, hinting that his soul itself is subtly breaking down in this strange realm. This was due to the soul storm above.[3]

Outer Edges

The outer edges, near the entrance connecting to the Underworld, are where "the shadows of living beings arrive after death" before they undertake a pilgrimage to the heart of the Land of the Dead. The outer edges have their own dangers, such as the "Creatures of Darkness" (Dark One) that sometimes crawl out of the Abyss. Despite these dangers, the true horrors all dwell deeper in the heartland.[4]

Heart of the Shadow Realm

The heartland of the Shadow Realm holds greater threats. Shadows of beings beyond comprehension, including Cursed, Sacred, Divine, and Unholy entities. These are beings that have endured countless eons of annihilation, changing over time. It's implied that essence storms and Creatures of Darkness are minor threats compared to what exists in the heartland. Weaker shadows are quickly ground into streams of essence, while stronger shadows endure longer. Creatures of Shadow who have succumbed to Corruption exist deeper within the Shadow Realm. These entities are described ominously as "things that should not exist at all".[4]

Nature

Reveal

The Shadow Realm is directly connected to the Shadow God, as it is not merely a part of his essence but his actual corpse. Unlike mortals, gods do not possess separate bodies, souls, or Soul Seas; these aspects are one and the same. Therefore, the Shadow Realm exists within what remains of the Shadow God himself.[5]

Entrances

Underworld

Main article: Underworld

The Realm of Death has always been linked to the Underworld, acting as a boundary between the living and the dead. In the current state of the realms, it now exists directly beneath the Underworld. Descending into the Abyss will lead them into the Shadow Realm.[5]

Other Possible Entrances

  • One was hidden in the caverns under the Forgotten Shore, where the dark sea had previously taken refuge from the relentless sun.[5]
  • Another hidden in the empty abyss below the Chained Isles.[5]

Inhabitants

The Shadow Realm is inhabited by shadows.[6]

Name Chapter Appeared Description
Human-like Shadows 2099 These shadows appear to be the remnants of fallen Awakened soldiers who perished in a recent battle. They move slowly and aimlessly in a single direction, lacking life, intelligence, or intent. Trails of light particles drift from them, and they gradually dissolve into streams of pure essence. Their dissolution is peaceful and inevitable, with no resistance or awareness of their fading existence.[6]
Mysterious Archer 1955
Shadow of Condemnation 2099 A colossal being, several kilometers tall, that moves through the desolate landscape.[6] This colossal entity formed from shadows, obsidian, black dust, and wind, looms over the realm. Unlike vague, dissolving shadows of fallen Awakened soldiers, this shadow is almost intact and dissolves into essence at an incredibly slow rate. It retains some agency, and a fragment of its former master's harrowing will, hinting at a lingering consciousness even after death.[7]
Dark Drifters 2100 Massive, formless beings, each hundreds of meters across, made entirely of darkness. They move with a ghostly wind and attack larger entities like Shadow of Condemnation by attaching to and consuming them. These beings function as predators in the Shadow Realm, preying on powerful shadows and devouring them piece by piece.[7]
- 2128 Shadows of beings beyond comprehension, including Cursed, Sacred, Divine, and Unholy entities. These are beings that have endured countless eons of annihilation, changing over time. Creatures of Shadow who have succumbed to Corruption exist deeper within the Shadow Realm. These entities are described ominously as "things that should not exist at all".[4]

History

First Venture to Shadow Realm

Sunny's first venture into the Shadow Realm gave him valuable insights and troubling losses. He gained two powerful black arrows — mystical, weighted, and steeped in the killing intent of the mysterious archer who attacked him. Crafted from rare materials, the arrows seem to possess a presence and lethal aura akin to a Saint's, making them formidable weapons. However, this venture also cost him his ability to use Shadow Lantern's [Gates of Shadow] enchantment. The revelation that the assailant could follow him back through the gate now makes him wary of opening it again, fearing that his shadows could unwittingly lead dangerous entities into his world.[8]

Exploring Death's Realm

Trivia

  • In Chapter 1301, the fourth mastery of Shadow Dance earned Sunny a fragment of Shadow's Domain.
  • In the second nightmare, Sevras used a piece of Shadow's domain to weaken Noctis.[9]
  • Sunny's first visit at the Shadow Realm is in Chapter 1954. While in the Shadow Realm as a shadow, Sunny's soul slowly disintegrated into pure soul essence, causing his shadow fragments to steadily decrease until he assumed a physical form.
    • Despite the Shadow Realm's ability to erode souls, Sunny was largely protected from its effects during his second visit because his connection to Nephis prevented him from existing there as a masterless shadow.[10]
  • In Shadow Realm, Sunny's body and Aspect were empowered and a torrent of spirit essence flowing into his soul.[11]
  • The cannons used in Night Garden were made from indestructible black stone that came from the Shadow Realm.[12]
