― Jest to the other Saints,
Chapter 1881 Leaving the Camp

Jest of the Dagonet clan is a former member of the cohort led by the founder of Clan Valor and one of the most experienced Awakened of the Sword Army.[1]

Appearance

An elegant older gentleman leaning on a black cane.[1]

Jest was described as a member of the First Generation, making him older than most Awakened. Despite his age, he remained in peak physical condition, possessing ferocious strength honed through decades of relentless training. His body is a flawless tool of murder, making him one of the most imposing Saints Cassie has encountered, at least in physique. Though he carries a cane, it is just for show—he has no limp, and his bones are in stellar state, reinforcing the idea that his appearance may be deceptive.[5]

Personality

Jest is outwardly humorous and carefree but has a dark, sinister side. Despite being friendly, he makes others uncomfortable due to his role in Warden's cohort, quietly eliminating factions and displaying a ruthless, violent nature beneath his lighthearted exterior.[6]

Jest is portrayed as a clever, enigmatic, and somewhat irreverent figure. Despite his advanced a. ge and dapper appearance, he is a formidable Saint with a sharp mind and a knack for wit. His role includes moments of humor and levity, as he often makes sarcastic or self-deprecating remarks. For example, when questioned about his disappearance during the battle against Condemnation, he deflects suspicion by producing Supreme soul shards and cracking questionable jokes. His ability to evade direct confrontation, even against formidable opponents, suggests a reliance on cunning and resourcefulness rather than brute strength.[7]

He is also a keen observer, as shown in his investigation of the Nameless Temple during the chaos of battle. Despite his attempt to approach stealthily, he is thwarted by Shadow and a guardian presence he cannot identify. This failure, however, does not diminish his insightful deductions. He discerns that Shadow harbors secrets but rules out connections to certain factions, concluding that his motivations revolve solely around Immortal Flame's descendant, Nephis. His keen perception of danger extends to his assessment of others, declaring Cassia, the quiet and unassuming Song of the Fallen, as the most dangerous among key figures.[7]

Aspect, Abilities & Flaw

It was mentioned in Chapter 1891 that he can play with the minds others. Jest possesses a set of insidious abilities centered around emotional manipulation, each building upon the last to make him a dangerously cunning opponent. While he is undeniably powerful and lethally cunning, his Aspect is most effective when facing at least two enemies, as his abilities work best by turning foes against each other.[8] His victims were usually hostages of their emotions, twisting their perceptions and compelling them to act in ways they normally wouldn't. Most people succumbed because they did not know what his powers were and lack understanding how they were being manipulated.[9]

Show/Hide Aspect Abilities

Received in Ability Chapter Mentioned Status Aspect Abilities
First Awakening
(After First Nightmare)
Dormant (Sleeper) 2138 Active His Dormant Ability can intensify the emotions of a target, making them burn much hotter in their chest. This applies to both positive emotions (joy, mirth, affection, satisfaction) and negative ones (fear, hatred, sorrow, anger). The effectiveness of this ability is situational, as it can be either extremely powerful or completely useless, depending on the circumstances.[8]
Awakening
(After first escape from Dream Realm)
Awakened (Awakened) 2138 Active His Awakened Ability can provoke anyone or anything into attacking him due to suffocating wrath. This is a potent form of mind manipulation, making his target lose control and lash out in blind anger. His Dormant Ability enhances this further, but the true strength of this power lies in its strategic use—it shines best when someone else is there to take advantage of the enemy's reckless aggression.[8]
Ascension
(After Second Nightmare)
Ascended (Master) 2138 Active His Ascended Ability can switch the subject of a target's emotion. This allows him to manipulate the direction of feelings in two ways:[8]
  • He can transfer uncontrollable fury from himself to another person, forcing his victim to attack whoever he chooses.[8]
  • He can shift affection or protectiveness that people feel toward their comrades onto himself, making them want to defend him.[8]
Transcendance
(After Third Nightmare)
Transcendent
(Saint)
1898, 1902 Active

His Transcendent form was that of a demonic abomination with goat-like horns and malevolent eyes, his gaze overflowing with terrifying malice.[10] In Chapter 1902, his Transcendent form had the body of a man and the legs of a goat, with two frightening horns growing from its disturbing, bestial head. It looked demonic either a satyr or a literal friend from the depths of hell.

According to Cassie, his Transcendent form took on a vaguely humanoid yet bestial appearance. He had a muscular human torso, furry goat-like legs, and a grotesque face that was a mix of human and bestial features, complete with two curved horns protruding from its head. The most unsettling detail is that Cassie still recognizes Jest's features in the monstrous face, indicating that his transformation does not completely erase his identity. She struggled to define, whether he resembled a devil or a satyr, but ultimately, she concluded that "he looked like a fiend".[11](Refer to Jest's Transformation Ability)

Flaw

Show/Hide

Note: Click Show/Hide Spoiler to reveal hidden information.

Jest's Flaw is that he cannot use enchanted items and doesn't possess a single Memory.[12][13]

This means he is unable to benefit from magical artifacts that others might rely on for power. Instead, he compensates by using his nearly indestructible wooden cane and preferring hand-to-hand combat, which he described as much more enjoyable.[12]

Background

Reveal

He was a member of the cohort led by Clan Valor founder and had known the future King of Swords since childhood.[14]

In Chapter 1883, Jest recounted his experience when he first contracted the Nightmare Spell. His mother initially dismissed it as a lack of interest in school. This led to a sore butt just before his First Nightmare. After returning from the Nightmare, he told people about battling demons in a magical world and possessing supernatural powers. They were so impressed by his abilities that he was sent to a mental asylum. There, he encountered the Nightmare Creatures that went on a rampage. Back then, nobody knew what Nightmare Creatures were. Despite their presence, they were called "the infected" out of habit.

During the opening of the Awakened Academy (almost eighteen years since the descent of the Spell), Jest was seen by Orum drunk as a Master. He mentioned that the Academy had nothing to do with him, his oldest died as he did not pass the first trial and his youngest is not of age yet.[6]

Trivia

  • He is known for his peculiar True Name.[1]
  • Sunny and Jest shared the bitter fate of having an extremely weird name.[1]
  • According to Gilead, Jest has many stories about Anvil and Smile of Heaven's mischief but listening to them is not for the faint of heart.[14]
  • In Chapter 1881, Sunny started to understand how Sir Jest got his peculiar True Name.
  • In Chapter 1885, his cane hides his sword.
  • Nephis was able to heal from a distance, but it did not apply to Jest.[15]
  • In Chapter 2143, Cassie managed to fight his Aspect, which allowed him to manipulate emotions, by leveraging her ability to separate herself from her feelings and rely on cold logic instead.
  • Jest's wife had wielded a much more destructive Aspect making her a valuable asset in the battle against the Nightmare.[16]
  • After the Throne War, Jest is spending his retirement being in charge of the exiled settlement allocated in Europe and a Citadel in Godgrave. He is leading them in a perpetual battle against the scarlet jungle.[17]
  • In Chapter 2917, he was enthralled by Asterion. He mentioned that when he accepted the Dreamspawn as his new lord the world does not seem funny anymore for some reason.
