Old Tom was a terrifying depth dweller who attacked the Night Garden several times.[3] It is one of the most persistent contenders in the race to the Eternal City.[4]

Description

It was described as a creature with enormous tentacles[5], and oily black blood.[3]

Its main body hidden in darkness, with tentacles trailing far behind. When its form became clearer, it was identified as resembling an oyster. Its hard shell, akin to that of a bivalve mollusk, was the size of an island and covered by a forest of eerie black growths. Beneath those growths, the shell glistened with dull gold, as though cast entirely from precious metal.[2]

Ability

Sunny inferred that Old Tom had possessed dimensional powers, possibly hiding a pocket dimension within its shell where swallowed things were trapped, explaining both the impossible volume of debris and the extraordinary length of its tentacles.[2]

History

End

From the open frame of this colossal shell spilled a hideous mass of formless flesh and colossal tentacles so vast it seemed impossible that they had ever fit within it. Drifting around the corpse were remnants of what Old Tom had consumed over countless ages — titanic bones of leviathans, indestructible chitin shells of monsters, rotting ship carcasses, mangled metal, and immense shards of diamond-like glass. These remains, expelled after its death, trailed behind the corpse like the tail of an abominable comet.[2]

The creature's end had been as horrific as its existence — both halves of its golden shell was shattered, each pierced by a massive, jagged hole at the center. The cracks radiating outward showed that Old Tom had been killed in a single devastating strike from something unimaginably powerful, a blow that destroyed whatever force had once kept the horror of the depths alive.[2]
