Hollow Mountains is a mountain chain that stretches for thousands of kilometers, forming a whole region of its own. It is marked as a Death Zone.[1]
Location
It is located at the northern border of human territory.[1]
Description
The Hollow Mountains are a vast region of the Dream Realm formed by a jagged mountain chain so immense that it functions as a realm of its own. The area is covered in a white mist of nothingness, where there is almost no sensory detail—no color, sound, scent, or movement—and only occasional terrifying creatures lost within the fog.[2]
The mountains seemed to serve as a border between the Forgotten Shore and the rest of the Dream Realm. They were tall and jagged, piercing the skies like the fangs of a giant dragon. Their distant peaks were covered in pristine white snow and wrapped in a veil of mist that streamed into the ravines and onto the ridges below.[3]
The interior of the mountains is filled with elemental darkness, a place where true horrors dwell. This darkness renders reflection powers (Mordret's Abilities) ineffective, making it especially dangerous to enter.[2]
Although often considered a useless and hostile domain, the Hollow Mountains can serve as a natural fortress. The surrounding white mist acts as a barrier that makes invasion difficult, while still allowing movement outward into neighboring regions.[2]
Creatures
The Hollow Mountains were a dreadful abyss filled with unfathomable horrors, capable of reshaping the world with their chilling malice of alien wills. Great abominations, and even Cursed ones, their grotesque shapes moving in the mist. Sometimes, one could hear eerie sounds echoing in the mist as though their mind was being consumed by them. The region was named Death Zones by humans, as there was no place for mortals. The Hollow Mountains were a natural preserve for the most dreadful beings, and only those with a strong will could survive in this abyss.[4]
The creatures of nothingness were only encountered after venturing deeper into the deadly region.[4]
Underground Mine
The tunnel leading into the mine was wide and spacious.[5] Deeper into the mine were more tunnels forking away from the main one. Further down, the surrounding walls were decorated with intricate stone carvings.[6]
Somewhere in the mine was a wide circular hall and in the center of it was a dark chasm that looked like the gates of the Underworld.[7]
Deeper into the bottom of the mine was a wide underground river. The running water was black as ink but not the same as the cursed sea had been. There was no smell of salt in the air and wisps of mist were rising above the surface of the subterranean river, swirling in the silent darkness. it looked like the boundary of the Underworld.[8]
On the shore, there was a stone pillar built, and tied to it was a beautiful boat made of pale wood.[8]
Underworld
- Main article: Underworld
The Underworld was situated beneath the Hollow Mountains.[9]
Mist
In a dark abyss of the Sky Below, where white mist rolls down the slopes, anything beyond the veil of mist cannot be seen. Inside the mist, one can realize that they do not exist, their sense of self dissolves, and they are pulled into a state of senselessness.[10]
Background
The Hollow Mountains are called hollow, but in fact, they are filled with darkness. These hollows are serving as reservoirs for this darkness. It is where darkness lives, and where it comes from.[11]
The Hollow Mountains are described as a scar left on existence by the fall of a Void Creature slain by the gods in the primordial past. Because of this, the Hollow Mountains are both a standalone realm and part of countless other realms, acting as a bridge between them for those capable of crossing it. This is why the mountains stretch across the Dream Realm and border many different regions.[2]
Trivia
- At the southern edge of Forgotten Shore[1], situated in a valley just at the point where the foothills turned into proper mountains was a vast pit. It was where the First Lord of Bright Castle and his companions had traveled.[12]
- There is a vast quarry below the mountains. It is where the materials for the mighty wall of the Dark City had come from.[12]
- Somewhere in the quarry is a pile of rocks, an unmarked grave[13], written in simple letters of human language that said: "Her nightmare was over".[5]
- The mist around the mountains is dangerous.[5] There was something hidden beneath when a momentary hole in the veil of flowing mist was created during the clash of Saints on the Northern Island.[14]
- Mordret is wary of the Hollow Mountains primarily because of the dangers and limitations they impose on him, despite their strategic value. Most notably, he did not dare venture into the hollow interior of the mountains, where elemental darkness ruled, since utter darkness was the enemy of reflections, rendering his powers mostly useless there.[2]
- The Hollow Mountains were described as containing both nothingness and true darkness.[15]
- Nephis explained in Chapter 3035, that the Hollow Mountains were created when a powerful Void Being fell in battle against the gods at the dawn of time, its blood flowing into the fissures to create true darkness. She suggested that such an impossibly fearsome battle could have damaged the fabric of existence, allowing nothingness to flow through the tears.
