“ Well. A mirror can only reflect what is in front of it, Sunless. Is it my fault that the things in front of me are cruel, vile, and deceitful? I think not… then again, maybe it is. Either way, I don't really care. Blame your bad luck for being of use to me, if you wish. ”

― Mordret to Sunny,
Chapter 589 Dark Mirror

Mordret is the voice that Sunny heard from the darkness of the Sky Below.[13] He is also the creator of the murderous Reflection Sunny had encountered on the Reckoning Island.[3]

Appearance

Awakened - Voice

His voice sounded pleasant and calm and seemed to have come from the darkness of the Sky Below itself.[13]

Awakened - Reflection

He first appeared somewhere as a reflection of a young man sitting on the stone floor in the center of the room with his hand chained behind his back.[14]

Awakened - Soul Form

Mordret was tall and slender, with pale skin and raven-black hair. He seemed to be in his twenties, older than Kai and Effie by a couple of years. His face was sharp and thin… not exactly handsome, but at the same time charming and strangely beautiful. His most striking feature, though, were his eyes, which didn't seem to possess a color of their own, and instead reflected the world back on itself like two pools of liquid silver.

— Sunny's description of Mordret,
Chapter 591 Sea of Soul

He was dressed in a simple tunic, its fabric long devoid of any color. He wore no armor and didn't seem to bear any weapon. But he was radiating immense pressure from his slender figure. His face seemed familiar, he looked exactly like a slightly older, male version of Morgan of Valor. The resemblance was so striking that it could only be shared by siblings. Based on Sunny, all around the Prince of Nothing, he could see a pale golden glow — the light of divinity.[15]

Awakened - Second Nightmare

He first appeared as the fiend of the fog that lures people with its pleasant voice and people who listened disappeared without a trace. He was far more cunning and devious than any Nightmare Creature.[16]

He then appeared wearing the body of the priestess who had been first sent to find him. Destroying his body was useless because he could just take another.[17]

He showed up again as a reflection on the surface of the lake. A tall and slender young man, with pale skin and raven-black hair. His face was sharp and thin not exactly handsome, but at the same time charming and strangely beautiful.[18]

His striking eyes didn't seem to possess a color of their own and instead reflected the world back on itself like two pools of liquid silver.[18]

Ascended - Waking World

A slender young man, dressed in dark armor, had pale skin and raven-black hair. His face was sharp and thin not exactly handsome but charming and beautiful. His eyes, which did not seem to possess a color of their own, reflected the world like two pools of liquid silver.[19]

During the fight with Morgan, he lost one of his eyes and one of his hand.[20]

Ascended - Third Nightmare

Tall, slender, with raven-black hair and a sharp face that wasn't exactly handsome, but possessed a strange beauty to it. His most striking feature, however, were his mirror-like eyes, which reflected the world back on itself like two pools of liquid silver.
— Sunny's description of Mordret,
Chapter 1498 Mirror Realm
In Chapter 1498, he appeared perfectly fine, with no wounds or bloodstains on his body or tunic, and his hand, as if never severed, was back.

Transcendent

...a man clad in dark leather armor. He was tall and slender, with pale skin and raven-black hair. His face was sharp and thin — not exactly handsome, but at the same time strangely beautiful. His eyes were like two pools of liquid silver that reflected the world back on itself.

His gaze was cold and chilling, as if a deep dark ocean was barely contained beneath the thin film of mirror-like silver.

— Chapter 1861 Homecoming

Supreme

Mordret appeared as a tall man with a slender figure and strange eyes that reflected the world back upon itself. He wore the tattered remains of a stylish viridian suit and smiled easily as he folded his hands behind his back. Behind him stretched millions of vessels — some human, some resembling Nightmare Creatures — all of whom were him. His presence was eerie, carrying a vague sense of wrongness from the absence of something that all humans supposed to possess. Now, an added strangeness clung to him, making it seem as though he was even less related to anything human than before — as if a myriad of broken shards that had once been a person were merely hiding beneath human skin.[21]

In Chapter 3144, in the gathering of demigods, Mordret came out of reflections, gazing upon the world with his strange, mirror-like eyes. The world reflected in his eyes is a perfect copy of itself, and yet eerily different. He wore an aloof expression.

Personality

Volume 3-10

“ I haven't really spoken to anyone in a long, long time. It would be a shame to finally find someone to talk to, only for them to die soon. Don't you think? ”

― To Sunny,
Chapter 438 Prince of Nothing

He seemed very friendly due to the fact that he gave Sunny information about himself, and the Sky Below and also gave suggestions to survive the divine flame.[13][22][23][24] He did not blame Sunny for what happened to him and his creature when the later said he killed it.[3] He was also concerned about Sunny poisoning himself when he was eating the raw meat of a Nightmare Creature.[23]

During the events inside the Night Temple, he had shown deep malice and uncanniness.[25] Witnessing his handiwork, it seemed that he had a sadistic streak about him.[26]

He had shown himself to be extremely cunning and meticulous, and even an ingenious deceiver like Sunny fell into his trap. However, his sadistic way of killing and morbid displays of demented butchery were utterly impractical and did not fit into his image of a cold and calculating strategist.[27] According to Sunny, Mordret is unpredictable and dangerous, and his goals are unknown.[6]

Opposite of his sister Morgan who had everything, Mordret had nothing and everything he had tried to make his was either destroyed or taken away.[28]

Mordret is deeply obsessed with vengeance, particularly against his father, to a demented degree, and expresses a twisted desire to personally kill him—going so far as to say he would be incensed and very, very cross if someone else robbed him of that pleasure.[4]

He is capable of acting against his instincts when necessary. He acknowledges the unpredictability of life and approaches situations with measured consideration, such as deciding whether to keep the blind witch alive for potential usefulness. Mordret is incapable of feeling regret and does not engage in introspection or self-reflection. Despite this, he retains awareness of past experiences and emotional impacts, such as the bitterness and hurt from being discarded by Asterion, though he also recognizes moments of relief. His upbringing—marked by neglect, abandonment, and a fractured sense of belonging—shaped him into a being who is cautious, pragmatic, and focused on survival, while remaining largely unaffected by conventional emotional responses.[29]

Ambition and Resolve

From his imprisonment in the mirror cage, he is shown as contemplative and deeply aware of his own life's injustices, recognizing the betrayals, abandonments, and denials he has suffered. He allows hatred to consume him deliberately, embracing anger, resentment, and a desire for retribution as a conscious choice rather than a mere instinct. This hatred becomes the axis of his existence, giving his life focus and purpose, and he exhibits remarkable patience and endurance, waiting years for the right moment to act.[30]

He is also strategic and ambitious, forging his destiny through calculated, ruthless action. His rise from captivity to the title of Supreme is marked by boldness, decisiveness, and a willingness to confront godlike powers. Mordret is not merely reactive; he plots meticulously, seizes opportunities, and executes his plans with precision, even if the ultimate fulfillment of his goals is partially thwarted.[30]

Despite his formidable power and cunning, Mordret is not invulnerable to existential uncertainty. Once his vengeance is achieved, he experiences aimlessness and a sense of purposelessness, revealing a side of him that craves meaning and fears nonexistence. Even a man so defined by wrath and ambition retains a profound desire to live and to matter, prioritizing survival and self-preservation when larger existential threats loom.[30]

Attaining Supreme Rank

Mordret had attained Supremacy during a soul duel with the Skinwalker, which allowed him to inhabit millions of vessels and ultimately destroy the Great Terror. Despite possessing an impossible number of vessels, he did not appear mad, unlike Soul Stealer who had been driven insane by fracturing himself into countless pieces, though Mordret no longer seemed entirely human either. His face and manners remained familiar, yet something alien lingered in his gaze.[31]

Mordret was now a Sovereign wielding a Divine Aspect, making him too dangerous to treat lightly, as defeating him would come at great cost even for Sunny and Nephis. Known for his deviousness and lack of remorse, Mordret was responsible for the massacre of the House of Night, but he had also kept his word when it served him, such as during the final battle at Verge. He admitted needing Sunny and Nephis only as shields against Asterion, since only Sovereigns could stand against the Dreamspawn, and intended to eventually strike at Asterion himself, driven both by survival and hatred.[31]

Volume 12

Reveal

The Mordret of the present is described as being not the same as the Mordret of yesterday. Sunny considers him "a strange guy", receiving the impression that Mordret does not care very much about whether humanity survives. Rather than being deeply invested in the apocalypse, Mordret appears to extend his help "only out of courtesy". He is notably detached from the larger struggle compared to the other Sovereigns and does not immediately commit to whether he will challenge the Fifth Nightmare, either because he is still hesitating or because he prefers not to share his decision.[32]

Mordret has isolated himself from the rest of the world, maintaining contact with only a few select people, including Morgan, Rain, and Cassie. He wasn't as invested in the apocalypse as the rest of them and reflects a degree of separation from humanity and its affairs, with little indication that the survival of humanity itself is a major personal concern for him.[32]

Despite his apparent indifference toward humanity's survival, Mordret still appears to care about at least one person — his sister. This remaining attachment leads Sunny to believe that Mordret could ultimately choose to enter the Fifth Nightmare. His concern for his sister is therefore presented as one of the few personal motivations that might influence his decision.[32]

Mordret remains an exceptionally powerful figure despite his changed disposition. He still wields a Divine Aspect, and among the Sovereigns, only Mordret could claim to be as powerful as Sunny and Nephis.[32]

Battle Ability

Mordret is a genius when it comes to combat. It was his skill and talent that truly makes him dangerous. The ability to mirror someone's Aspect sounds terrifying but he has to fight someone with their own Aspect seconds after coming in possession of it which is not an easy feat. Inside the Soul Sea, he can mirror the Aspect of his enemy and use the same Abilities by charging them with the power of multiple cores. Since he sacrificed his personal power to create five mirror monsters, that made the overall threat he represents far greater, but the danger to one's soul far lesser.[33]

Background

“ Oh my! I wish! Wouldn't that be grand… but no, I am just an Awakened who had studied the Chained Isles, probably the same way that you have studied them in your travels. The ruins here are all but destroyed by the endless cycle of the Crushing, but if one knows where to look, there are still some answers left to find. ”

― To Sunny,
Chapter 437 Nothing, Nothing, Nothing

He created the Ascended Reflection, Mirror Beast when he was just a lonely kid and they were together for a long time before they weren't anymore. He had his First Nightmare when he was twelve.[3]

He was raised in the Dream Realm and only returned to the waking world when he was around thirteen.[34]

Trivia

  • He is not from the Sanctuary of Noctis.[23] Instead, he was imprisoned inside the Night Temple.[35][5]
  • During his first conversation with Sunny, his voice can't be recorded by Ordinary Rock.[13]
  • They were able to talk due to the mirror shard that the Ascended Reflection in Reckoning Island had left behind, smeared with his blood.[36][3]
  • Based on the runes of Cruel Sight, he was supposed to be the young prince that the Dreamspawn had taken away as payment for the deal made by his father and later returned but was met with fear and suspicion.[37]

[...Full of pride, the noble knight made a deal with the Dreamspawn. Years later, the knight had defeated all his enemies and became a mighty king. On the day that his son uttered the first word, the Dreamspawn came to the king and demanded his pay. He left the kingdom with the child and disappeared, never to be seen again. Much later, the young prince returned and stood beneath his father's throne. He expected to be met with joy and warmth, but was met with fear and suspicion instead.]

  • When he was intrigued by Sunny due to his tattoo and his echo.[38][39]
  • He was looking for the Ebony Tower due to its connection to the original Ivory Tower. According to him, if one finds the connection, they might be able to reach past the Crushing and step foot on the heavenly isle.[40]
  • He seems to know a lot about the Prince of the Underworld and daemons.[39]
  • He thought Sunny was a legacy due to some things that suggest he has a certain background but then there are as many contradictions.[41]
  • He revealed that he was watching Sunny travel across the Dream Realm but chose not to speak. He fooled him to come to the Night Temple. Using the mirror shard he was able to break free from his prison at the Night Temple.[42]
  • He was a human at some point due to the knowledge of the waking world that he had shown. Only the Lost and human Echoes had been allowed to guard him.[43]
  • Pierce and Welthe (due to an amulet[43][44]) are immune to his powers.[45]
  • The reason he had been imprisoned, why the Night Temple was closed off to strangers, and why only the Echoes and the Lost were allowed to guard him.[45]
Echoes did not possess souls and couldn't be taken, while the Lost could not return to the waking world even if he somehow escaped and took them as a vessel and back in the waking world, catching him would be all but impossible.[45]

  • His hatred is aimed at clan Valor.[45]
  • He had the knife cut out of a single piece of a pristine white stone and somehow made it disappear without a trace.[46]
  • He was kept in an empty mausoleum inside the Night Temple for six years by the great, noble, and illustrious clan Valor.[46]
  • According to him, Sunny can't become real friends with him due to having the stench of a Dreamspawn. He thought Asterion was scheming something and that he was sent to Chained Isles by Asterion and hunt down his Beast.[47]
  • He knows that Sunny can't lie due to the Ascended Reflection, Mirror Beast had mirrored his Aspect and thus has glimpsed it. He also knows Sunny's true name.[48]
  • His reasons for making Sunny his vessel:[15]
    • Sunny's body even though just an Awakened suits his needs, an Aspect that gifted both stealth and teleportation abilities. It is perfect for escaping a Saint.[15]
    • Sunny possessed Divine Aspect just like him.[15]
    • He was curious about what allowed Sunny to make him blind back in Ebony Tower, a powerful anti-divination artifact. (Weaver's Mask)[15]
  • When Mordret went to soul battle inside Sunny's soul sea, he was able to get the reflection of Cruel Sight and hinted that it was his weapon before.[49]
  • It was speculated that the Mirror Beast was a devil. It was either created as such or earned more cores in battles with powerful Nightmare Creatures. This can only mean that Mordret was more than a Terror once.[17]
  • He promised to kill two sovereigns: his father and Asterion.[50]
  • He allied himself with the Clan Song.[34]
  • He is older than Nephis and Sunny by four or five years and had his First Nightmare when he was twelve. So, he received a Divine Aspect when Nephis were around eight, and Sunny was around seven.[51]
  • He was revealed to have attended the Valor Clan ball due to Sunny's bluff while facing the bathroom mirror.[52][53]
  • He performed a painful ritual in Nether's tower that was supposed to shield him from Cassia's gaze.[54]
  • He communicated with Seishan through mirrors.[54]
  • Song of the Fallen is problematic for him due to her potent divination powers.[54]
  • In Chapter 1174, Mordret delivered Shtad's head to Morgan.
  • In Chapter 1182, Mordret showed up with his actual body together with 6 reflections.
  • Mordret and his sister, Morgan can be mistaken as twins due to the two of the looked so much alike.[55][56] [57]
  • He invited Sunny to challenge the Third Nightmare with him.[58]
  • In Chapter 1502, Mordret mentioned that he did not bring his flaw inside the Third Nightmare.
  • Mordret won't die even if his physical body or soul is destroyed. To truly eliminate him, destroying his reflection is necessary. There are two ways:[59]
    • Defeat him in a soul battle.[59]
    • Destroy his physical body without any other bodies or reflections for him to escape into.[59]
  • In Chapter 1165, in his POV he mentioned that aside from his father and Asterion, he hated the 'other' the most.
  • Mordret carried the lineage of War God but the core of his Aspect seemed to be connected to reflections and mirrors rather than something to do with warfare.[60]
  • Beings like Mordret and Nephis fear being caught by enemies more than most people, and their strength can be exploited to become a weakness.[61]
  • Mordret was believed to have known about the Mirror Maze, as his Dormant and Awakened Abilities allowed him to gaze and travel through mirrors. Sunny suspected Mordret had felt the presence of the mirrors beneath True Bastion when he returned to Clan Valor and may have been the first human to explore the maze.[62]
  • In Chapter 2798, he welcomed Cassie to his domain.
  • In Chapter 2807, Mordret's goal is to eradicate the Dreamspawn and prevent him from conquering the Human Domain, thereby stopping the accumulation of souls and Citadels that would make the Dreamspawn's power insurmountable. He aims to act independently, having decided that Sunny and Changing Star have failed to defeat the Dreamspawn on their own, leaving him no choice but to intervene. Mordret frames this as necessary to ultimately defeat the Dreamspawn, arguing that humanity itself makes the Dreamspawn impossible to kill and that their survival must be sacrificed to achieve victory. Ultimately, his plan envisions absorbing the Hunger Domain, eliminating all other beings, and confronting Asterion alone, continuing along the Path of Ascension until all existence consists solely of himself in countless forms. Mordret emphasizes that his primary motivation is survival, regardless of the deaths required to ensure it.
