The Others are deadly creatures and things that come from reflections. These creatures are the most dangerous because they are too strange, and little is known about them.[1]

Description

The Others are enigmatic and alien entities that evoke deep fear due to their mysterious and incomprehensible nature. Their origins and essence were shrouded in uncertainty, leaving even the most insightful observers unsure if they were sentient beings or merely manifestations of an unknown force.[2]

Characteristics

  • Their origin and nature are a mystery, and they may not even be truly beings in the full sense of the word or living beings.[2]
  • They move and act like creatures with will and an eerie form of sentience, but it is uncertain if this is genuine or a false impression created by a mysterious force or process.[2]
  • The harrowing evil they perpetrate results from their inherently alien nature, not intentional malice.[2]
  • They do not seem to understand concepts like a person’s desire to stay alive, the fear of pain, or the terror of having one’s body and soul stolen, maimed, torn apart, or consumed.[2]
  • They are neither divine nor profane and do not possess Ranks, Classes, or adherence to a single Aspect or unholy powers. [2]
  • They do not follow the conventions of power that both the Awakened and the Nightmare Creatures share.[2]
  • Some are surprisingly weak and easily destroyed, while others possess harrowing power,
  • Their bizarre nature makes obliterating them a dangerous and difficult undertaking.[2]

Ability

The Others strength is sometimes as powerful as the person they reflect and sometimes strangely brittle. Their danger lies in their strangeness, as no one knows their origins, motivations, or thoughts. It was suggested that if reflections do come to life, one should be fine as long as they don't look at or speak to them. It was also suggested not to answer if a reflection speaks to them, as it's better not to see them at all, see no evil and all that.[3]

Background

In the true Bastion, reflections possess an unsettling sentience, existing as strange, alien, and harrowing beings collectively referred to as The Others. These entities inhabit mirrors and reflective surfaces, with the potential to cross into the real world unbidden. Their nature is shrouded in mystery, but their presence is deeply tied to the history of Morgan's family, who once claimed the stronghold of the Demon of Imagination. This conquest came at a significant and devastating cost, making the subject a taboo even among the elders.[4]

The Great Mirror, central to this lore, must remain covered at all times to prevent incidents involving these entities. Reflective surfaces in the true Bastion, especially the lake, are inherently dangerous. A strict set of rules and prohibitions governs interactions in this domain. Breaking these rules can result in the loss of life and jeopardize the safety of others.[4]

Despite the precautions, even the most skilled and elite Knights permitted to enter true Bastion have met tragic and chilling ends.[4]

Trivia

  • Morgan was less vulnerable to the Others' influence than most, as she had destroyed her reflection many years ago.[5] (Morgan's Right of Passage)
    • Due to killing her own Reflection long before her Awakening, the Mirage City had weaker hold on her when she entered.[6]
  • The Others were mentioned as threats associated with the reflections inside the Mirror Maze. Sunny believed that the intended and safest method of traversing the maze was via reflections.[7]
  • In Palace of Imagination, Others contained nothingness within them, and when the Reflection was destroyed, that nothingness was released as mist.[8]
