Skinwalkers were bodies of Awakened with corrupted soul cores. The darkness of the soul core was so vast and deep. It can perfectly imitate human behavior, speak the human language flawlessly and knows the people who interacted with the body.[5] They are minions of a great abomination.[2]

Ability

The Great abomination can control corpses and speak the human language flawlessly.[5] These corrupted corpses were named as Skinwalkers.[6]

The Skinwalker gained access to the memories of its possessed corpses, enabling it to quickly learn about the waking world, the Awakened, their powers, and their thought patterns.[7]

History

It was one of the three Gate Guardians of Category Four Gates whose gates opened in the waking world and stayed to hunt the Awakened in the Dream Realm.[9][10] The goal of the creature is to find more humans to corrupt.[10]

Skinwalker had entered the siege capitals by pretending to be human before the Dream Gates were opened, spreading like a curse. Government forces led by Wake of Ruin and the great clans joined forces to eradicate the creature but did not manage to destroy it.[11]

Skinwalker is now a nightmare haunting humanity, with its vessels hiding in the shadows or poisonous wilds. It had learned and adapted with its act almost indistinguishable from normal humans. Several Citadels and cities in the Eastern Quadrant have fallen due to Skinwalker's infiltration, leading to new security measures to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.[11]

The infection of the entire Western Quadrant by the Skinwalker led to the loss of several cities. A full-scale war against the Skinwalker was underway in Australia, tying down many of the best Saints.[12]

According to Effie in Chapter 2278, the situation in the Eastern Quadrant is still dire. It is learning faster than the countermeasures they come up, making it increasingly difficult to contain. Although recent security protocols have reduced the number of victims in the latest outbreaks, the danger remains significant. The Saints, tasked with confronting the entity, are growing fatigued and require more frequent replacements. Despite the temporary improvement brought about by the cohort that conquered the Third Nightmare, the Skinwalker continues to grow stronger and appears to be nearing a critical point of evolution.

The Skinwalker was a Great Terror that did not discriminate between humans and Nightmare Creatures, consuming every vessel it could find in order to grow and spread. In the Eastern Quadrant, it had already wiped out all Nightmare Creatures, absorbing them completely. Their bodies were later inherited by Mordret, who took them into his Mirror Realm. As a result, the Eastern Quadrant became the only place in either world entirely free of abominations, though Nightmare Gates still remained to eventually bring new threats. The Skinwalker had been on the verge of evolving when Mordret destroyed it by challenging it to a soul duel, eliminating its root without having to annihilate every vessel individually. Neither Nephis nor Sunny could have eradicated it without devastating the continent, and even then, some vessels would likely have survived to spread the plague elsewhere.[3]

Trivia

  • The existence of Skinwalker caused the single most significant change in how humans lived after the Chain of Nightmares. The check before entering Ravenheart is a summoned flower. If it wilts in the presence of someone, it means that they were taken by the Skinwalker.[13]
  • Aiko, Ling and Quentin encountered a vessel of Skinwalker who was able to bypass the barrier meant for it.[14] Ling noticed that it smelled funny while Aiko commented that a merchant who doesn't haggle was suspicious.[15]
