Description
Third Nightmare
- It was mentioned that its grandeur could compete with the bustling prosperity of the large cities ruled by the Sybils.[2]
- Reaching Verge had something never expected in the Tomb of Ariel, land. The Great River's waters turned into ice, creating a vast landmass too large to be considered an island. The rough surface of the endless plain of ice was covered in sand and lifeless soil, with rolling hills and dry riverbeds. Skeletal trees rose in the air, bereft of leaves or life. Here and there, mounds of black stone formed a forest of twisted pillars.[3]
- There was a land of ice surrounding Verge which was indistinguishable from the flowing water at that distance, and the records left by the Sybils did not indicate its monumental foundation.[4]
- The information mentioned in the slates and passed by word of mouth among the citizens of Fallen Grace was the Seekers of Truth established a city near the beginning of time to serve as a staging ground for their attempts to reach the Estuary.[4]
Verge was once a city of the Seekers of Truth, built as close to the Estuary as they could. When it was later found, however, only the very edges of the city remained, with the rest buried under the First Seeker. The city had been overgrown by a vast, formless mass of red flesh that covered it like a spreading tumor, spilling into the Great River and infecting it while continuing to grow, giving the impression that it could one day cover the entire river and consume the Tomb of Ariel. This mass was not merely an abomination but the source of the Defilement, the origin of the horrid curse that had befallen the Great River, where even touching its flesh meant instant infection by Corruption. The ruins of Verge teemed with powerful and ancient Defiled, including Corrupted and Fallen abominations, along with countless Nightmare Creatures guarding the First Seeker, making it seem like an impossible place for a handful of Masters to overcome.[5]
Real Version
In its present state, Verge still stands though changed, distinguished from its phantom counterpart by the absence of the First Seeker—the abominable sea of flesh that once drowned the city now gone without a trace.[5]
Location
The city was built in the far reaches of the past, further downstream of the Great River.[2]
Trivia
- It was called Citadel of Truth by Wind Flower.[6]
