Overview

Show/Hide spoilers

House of Night is the last of the three Great Legacy Clans. The citadel formerly ruled by them was located somewhere on the ghostly waves of Stormsea.[4]

Note: House of Night is the name of the clan and Nightwalkers are those scions of the clan that excel in guiding ships through turbulent waters.

Nightwalkers

Main article: Nightwalkers

The representatives of the House of Night excel in guiding ships through turbulent waters. These scions of the House of Night allow naval convoys to reach their destinations.[6]

Others

Specialty

House of Night is most useful at sea.[8] The clan was deeply connected to Storm God. There were too many coincidences between their powers and the deity of depths, oceans, darkness, stars, travel, guidance, and disaster.[6]

The aspects of the Goddess of the Black Skies — the deity of depths, oceans, darkness, stars, travel, guidance, and disaster — were all eerily related to the House of Night's role in human society.[9]

Background

Unlike Valor and Song, which resembled most Legacy clans and had originated from a single family, House of Night was born from an alliance of several prominent clans. They resided in a dire region of the Dream Realm known as Stormsea, and controlled one of the three Great Citadels — which resembled a giant ship and was most likely left behind by one of the seven daemons.[6]

The House of Night did not possess a Sovereign of their own. Anvil of Valor and Ki Song ruled their families, but Asterion was seemingly not related and had nothing to do with the third Great Clan.[6]

Trivia

  • The nature of the region they controlled might have simply been too hazardous for either Valor or Song to invade, or their existence created a bit of much-needed balance and deterrence between the two dominant Great Clans.[6]
  • The emissaries of the House of Night were not part of the First Army.[10]
  • The Great Citadel of House of Night was connected to the Demon of Repose.[11]
  • In Chapter 1860, Naeve declared that the House of Night is no more.
  • According to Mordret, he did not kill all members of the House of Night, claiming he merely removed the elders or rather, replaced them. While acknowledging some collateral damage, he asserts that most of the Ascended and Awakened members, the actual Nightwalkers survived. He attributed the downfall of the House of Night's leadership to their refusal to submit to the Song Domain and become honored vassals of the Queen, describing their choice as pride and arrogance and their failure as the gravest sin.[12]
  • The House of Night used to possess a star map which was one of the most important relics of their clan, but it vanished along with their leader, Nightwalker.[13]
  • The House of Night and the Eternal City are described as inseparably intertwined since the clan was born there.[14]
  • In Chapter 2604 when Naeve remarked that the House of Night is no more, Jet countered that it still exists, even if not as an independent force.
  • According to Naeve and Bloodwave, the lighthouse of the Eternal City is not just a lighthouse, but also a temple dedicated to Storm God, within which a star is trapped. This star is the source of the lineage of Storm God. Anyone who enters the lighthouse and is bathed in its silver light is reborn as a descendant of Storm God — or dies, as many do.[14]
  • Nightwalker entered the Lighthouse and survived, receiving the lineage of Storm God. Before escaping the Eternal City, he collected a portion of the starlight into a special Memory. This Memory, Star Lantern, allowed the founding members of the House of Night to also receive the lineage, though some perished in the process.[14]
  • The starlight stolen by Nightwalker and contained within the Star Lantern was not infinite. It was described as merely a wisp and was eventually exhausted. Aether was the last person to directly benefit from it. Furthermore, not every child born in the House of Night inherited the lineage, and with the frequent deaths of Awakened, the bloodline was always at risk of vanishing. Over time, no one manifested the lineage as strongly as Nightwalker himself.[15]
