True Name: Nightingale[1]

His True Name can be translated literally as "Sings Beautifully from the Night Skies", which could mean either "Enchanting Siren of the Night", or simply a "nocturnal bird".[1]

Rank: Dreamer[2] → Awakened[3] → Ascended[4] → Transcendent[5] → Supreme.[6]

Aspect Rank: Awakened[7] → Ascended.[7]

Kai's Aspect had evolved after he had faced and slain the Ivory Dragon. In Chapter 748, his Awakened Aspect was now Ascended rank.[7]

His voice acquired a supernatural quality, compelling those who heard it to follow his commands.[7]

The outcome and consequences were determined by how much essence he poured into the compulsion, the target's resistance, and some other unknown factors. Direct commands were difficult to impose on people who possessed strong willpower or a high resistance to mind attacks.[7]

The compulsion did not have to be directed at an enemy. He could call upon his allies to fight harder or to hold their ground no matter what. He could instill any emotion he desired in large groups of people or, like a siren, lure them to their deaths.[7]

Kai's call provides clarity for soldiers in battle. An Ascended would most likely be able to resist it to some degree but his terrifying ability makes it impossible for Awakened to resist. If he ever misused his power, mundane humans would happily end their lives if he asked.[9]

He can use this ability to himself.[10]

Other Details

Kai can send a destructive sonic wave spreading outward in a wide cone.[12]

Sunny assessed that Kai might have the potential to become a Sovereign, despite his apparent self-doubt. While Kai's doubts seemed ill-suited for Sovereignty, Sunny reconsidered his judgment after witnessing Kai's ability to command the world. He noted that Kai's Aspect compelled him to constantly practice exerting authority, not by force like a Supreme who bend the world to their will, but by making the world willingly listen to him.[13]

As a Supreme, his Transcendent form had become far greater.[14]

Supremacy
(After Fourth Nightmare)
Supreme
(Sovereign)
3143 Active

Kai's source element seemed to be songs. His Supreme Ability was a word, which he could leave on a living being's soul as a mark or brand, thereby making them a member of his Domain. This could be done voluntarily or involuntarily, although Kai would never resort to the latter. Voluntary acceptance was more difficult because it required a certain quality from the person being infused with his Word, perhaps natural affinity or talent.[14]

Different people could draw different benefits from becoming members of his Domain.[14]

  • The fundamental benefit was the ability to share in Kai's Ascended Ability, which allowed him to reshape the world with his voice. Most people were incapable of achieving much with this power, while those with the right predisposition could achieve more.[14]
  • The ability only worked when they sang; simply speaking had no effect whatsoever. People with musical and artistic inclinations had a better chance of being receptive to the Word and becoming powerful chanters.[14]
    • Particularly talented chanters could receive additional boons, such as enhanced vision from Kai's Awakened Ability, while a very small number could even gain the ability to fly. Although an average person could accomplish little while chanting alone, a large group chanting together could fuse their otherwise ineffective efforts and produce a powerful effect. The larger the choir, the more pronounced the changes.[14]

Flaw

He can tell when someone is lying to him.[15]

His strange Flaw, while useful, was also often detrimental and misleading.[16]

Attributes

Show/Hide Attributes

Name Chapter Appeared Status Description
Dragonslayer 1521(Received)
1526(Mentioned)
Active It describes being forged in battle, tempered in flame, and quenched in dragon blood.[17]

Explanation

After Kai killed the Dread Lord, he received the [Dragonslayer] Attribute.[10][17] His new attribute enhanced his strength. Based on the description, it had something to do with durability and elemental resistance.[17] His constitution as a Dragonslayer grants him a great deal of resistances against various types of attacks, especially those based on fire but the heat inside the volcano in Ravenheart is too much even for him.[18]

Mark of Ash 2446(Mentioned) Temporary
(Ariel's Game)

Explanation

Kai gained an Attribute called [Mark of Ash] in his time in Ariel's Game. Although the rings of ash that had empowered him during the game disappeared afterward, they left behind a lasting effect in the form of this Attribute. [Mark of Ash] granted Kai an affinity to ash, though the exact nature of that affinity was unclear. Among its known effects, the Attribute increased his already considerable resistance to fire and provided a minor but scaling enhancement when he was near or surrounded by intense heat. This Attribute was one of several valuable gains Kai brought back from the game, alongside his new knowledge, experience, a custom-made bow, and a quiver of masterwork enchanted arrows.[19]

Aspect Legacy

Reveal

Kai received an Aspect Legacy during the Fourth Nightmare, while fighting the two Dread Generals at the city wall. The legacy caused something "deep and profound" to take root in his mind, described as something "as old as the world, or possibly even predated it". He recognized it as something he had repeatedly attempted to master but had previously failed to fathom. This was the True Name of Fire.[20]

Kai had a unique resonance with Shaping due to his Transcendent form. He believed that invoking Names could produce a result "much more destructive than for any other sorcerer". However, his mind had previously been unable to accommodate any Names. A powerful force seemed to prevent him from learning them, leaving him not merely without talent for Shaping but "the opposite of talented, completely inept".[20]

The Aspect Legacy changed this limitation. The Name of Fire, along with several other Names, came to reside in Kai's mind after fusing with his spirit. As a result, invoking them became natural to him, "like it had been his power all along". The Names were described as being "like songs", evoking a familiar longing within him.[20]

Kai subsequently invoked the Song of Fire, producing a vast pillar of radiant silver flame from his maw. The flame consumed the two Dread Generals, reducing them to ash before annihilating the ash itself. The pillar then struck the city and exploded into a radiant sea of immolating fire, spreading immense heat throughout the surrounding area.[20]

Domain

Reveal

Kai could leave that word on a living being's soul as a mark or a brand (related to Kai's Supreme Ability), making them a member of his Domain. This could be done voluntarily or involuntarily. The voluntary method was more difficult because it demanded a certain quality from the person being infused with his Word.[14]

Different people could therefore draw different benefits from becoming a member of Kai's Domain.[14]

  • The fundamental benefit of membership was the ability to share in Kai's Ascended Ability, which allowed him to reshape the world with his voice. Most people were incapable of achieving anything with that power, while those with the right predisposition could achieve more, although their abilities could not compare to the frightening extent of Kai's own Ability. The power only worked when they sang; simply speaking had no effect whatsoever. People with musical and artistic inclinations had a better chance of being receptive to the Word and becoming powerful chanters.[14]
  • Those especially talented could receive other boons. Some chanters inherited enhanced vision from Kai's Awakened Ability, while some could even gain the ability to fly, although there were very few of those. Most people could not achieve much after becoming members of Kai's Domain if they chanted alone. However, when a large group of people sang together, their otherwise ineffective efforts could fuse, producing a powerful effect. The larger the choir, the more pronounced the changes.[14]
