Fallen Grace is one of the cities on the Great River where Dusk reigns.[2]
Description
Fallen Grace looked a lot like Weave, but also different. It was larger and more developed than the forlorn city of Weaver's followers. It featured more island-ships with cobblestone-paved buildings and rope bridges, with wide canals below connecting the islands. The city had no windcatchers, but vibrant scarlet fabric sails stretched between the taller buildings, making the city look like a grandiose flotilla. The buildings were built from white stone and pale wood, with crimson accents. Fallen Grace was like a flower drifting between the ominous crimson sky and the blood-red waters of the Great River. However, most of the buildings were showing signs of deterioration, and the newer ones were not as picturesque. The scarlet sails had faded, and the streets were too desolate.[3]
The supposedly city's center was an edge instead, with empty water and countless island-ships missing. The rope bridges were cut, and the buildings near the edge had burn marks. The city seemed to have been dissected into two halves, one still drifting on the crimson waves and the other lost to the past.[4]
Library
There was a temple used to be dedicated to knowledge. The three sybils who ruled Fallen Grace each had different responsibilities, the senior sybil is the guardian of truths overseeing a vast library. Many faithful priests and priestesses maintained and expanded the library, ensuring its preservation and expansion.[5]
“ A giant maw that opens underwater and swallows entire island-ships… a region where the wind literally cuts flesh… what the hell, an illusory island that can only be seen by the dying… ” ― Description from the slates,
Chapter 1389 Shifting Map
The description of what was depicted on the slate was engraved on the back.[6]
Background
Fallen Grace was ruled by an oracle, and its citizens lived by different rules. Despite how potent the sybils' prophetic powers were, the cities of the sybils still fell. The reason is precisely because people relied on the sybils so much and the sybils' omniscience could not have been sufficient, especially when other sinister powers were at play.[3]
Fallen Grace had migrated upstream to escape an attack. A large part of it had been lost in the process, both in terms of island-ships and people.[4]
Trivia
- Fallen Grace, the city ruled by the last sybil, was situated in the region of the Great River that had already mostly succumbed to the Defilement. It is perhaps the last human stronghold remaining in the Tomb of Ariel.[7]
- Initially, three sybils ruled Fallen Grace and each had different responsibilities.[5]
