Hope's magic is also known as Runic sorcery[1], or Runic magic[2]. This is the most common type of sorcery used by mortals without a true understanding of its nature. This type of sorcery is used with Sorcery of Names.[1]
This is based on the inscription of runes and seemed to have been mostly used by humans.[2] Enchantments were simply expressions of the enchanter's will, and the runes were the building blocks with which the enchanter manipulated the movement of energy to achieve their goal.[3]
Runic Sorcery is the most widely known and easily accessible school of sorcery, similar to Shaping.[4]
Background
Runic sorcery was not the same as weaving. Mortals were only familiar with one type of sorcery in the Dream Realm's primordial era: the Sorcery of Names. They could invoke the true names of things to wield great power, but speaking those names aloud was often an impossible task.[5]
Hope, however, had invented the concept of writing and gifted it to humans. With the knowledge of writing, humans learned how to transcribe true names and did not need to speak them aloud anymore. Furthermore, the names could be bound to material objects through writing, thus granting the invocations permanence, and could be shaped into songs and phrases.[5]
However, it was still based on the knowledge of true names. Without knowing the meaning of the name, transcribing it would have no effect.[5]

Trivia
- Runic sorcery and shaping (See Sorcery of Names) relied on True Names, one etched through a written language, the other invoking them directly.[14] The Sorcery of Names and the Sorcery of Runes seem to have a positive correlation, both relying on invoking True Names.[15]
- The early mastery of runic sorcery was due to an ominous and ancient artifact, a mirror, hidden in a dark and silent underground chamber in Bastion. The mirror had a connection to the Other Side, a place where rare inscriptions were left in the ruins.[16] (Great Mirror)
