Apotheosis is described as the step of becoming a Spirit. It is required to ascend to the Sacred Rank, also referred to as becoming a Spirit or a lesser deity. It signifies a complete change in one's state of existence — not just in terms of raw power, but in the quality of the soul, breadth of perception, and depth of consciousness. Apotheosis is the moment when a Supreme transcends their humanity and crosses the metaphysical threshold separating mortals from divine beings.[1]
Comparison to Supreme Rank
While a Supreme dominates a portion of the world through their expanded soul and overwhelming Will, a Spirit — one who has undergone Apotheosis — possesses a soul vast enough to encompass the entire world. This immense leap cannot be bridged through force or talent alone. As explained by Eurys, Apotheosis is as much about becoming capable of bearing the vastness of divinity as it is about strength. The transformation requires enlightenment, emotional evolution, and a gradual detachment from humanity. This is why becoming "less human" over time is considered both a burden and a blessing — it is a painful process of self-alteration, but also the only path to preparing one's being for divine consciousness.[1]
Process
Natural Apotheosis
Natural Apotheosis is a method of attaining godhood without challenging the Fifth Nightmare, instead achieved through growth by feeding on one's own Domain. Sunny explained that Asterion is aiming for natural Apotheosis, seeking to accomplish what Kanakht failed to achieve by attaining godhood through feeding on his own Domain — not as a human, but as a creature, which in practice means enthralling all of humanity and then devouring it. This process treats the Human Domain as fertilizer for his growth, consuming the souls of countless humans in order to ascend. Asterion presents this path as a safer, better way to become a deity compared to the Fifth Nightmare.[2]
- Spirits are beings whose souls encompass an entire realm, merging with the laws that govern it. In the Dream Realm, however, darkness lurks beneath the roots of the cursed realm. Consequently, any attempt to achieve natural Apotheosis by fusing one's soul with the laws of the Realm of Corruption is fated to fail.[3]
Importantly, Apotheosis is a slow and gradual process. It demands immense time, usually centuries or even millennia, to reshape the self into something capable of surviving and embracing divinity. There are no shortcuts. Brute strength, no matter how great, cannot replace the experiential and spiritual foundation needed.[1]
Fifth Nightmare
Conquering the Fifth Nightmare meant achieving godhood, though only as a lesser deity.[4]
The Fifth Trial of Weaver's Spell was described by the Fallen One as a uniquely cruel Trial that could make its challengers into deities, but only by undoing them as humans first. It was associated with the Seed of a Fifth Trial, whose blooming manifested a Nightmare Gate unlike any before, opening in the Spinesea and allowing Cursed Ones to invade Mictlan.[5]
According to the Fallen One, not everyone could survive the unmaking caused by the Fifth Trial, nor what followed afterward. The Trial had to be conquered together in intent, yet each participant would have to face the unmaking alone, without relying on allies. Every weapon wielded and every power possessed would become a burden, and even the challengers' own Domains would turn against them. Within the Nightmare, survival depended solely on oneself, but preserving the truth of one's self was far more difficult than staying alive, which was identified as the true peril of the Fifth Trial of Weaver's Spell.[5]
The Trial
The Fifth Nightmare was fundamentally different from all the rest, challenging it was a far greater gamble than conquering the previous four Nightmares and that the chances of success were slim. According to Asterion, Anvil and Ki Song chose not to abandon the waking world or leave humanity without the guardianship of Supremes, while he himself saw no reason to risk his life in the Fifth Nightmare when there was, in his view, a safer and better way to become a deity. Asterion also revealed that knowledge about the Fifth Nightmare had been lost due to the broken chain of inheritance after the elders of Nephis' clan passed away and because Anvil and Ki Song regarded her as a threat. Finally, he warned that even if one succeeded in conquering the Fifth Nightmare, they would not remain the same afterward.[6]
There is no direct information about Fifth Nightmare because no Awakened from the current cycle of the Nightmare Spell had ever returned from it. According to Asterion, knowledge about it came from fragmented chronicles left in the ruins of past civilizations that had been infected by the Spell in previous cycles (pertaining to the other divine realms infected by Nightmare Spell but none succeeded), particularly those whose remains lay in Godgrave. The Fifth Nightmare corresponds to the fifth step on the Path of Ascension, among all steps it is the most profound, the step of attaining godhood, where the abyss between Supreme and Sacred is greater than the gap between all lower Ranks combined and is defined by a change in the inherent quality of one's being rather than gaining raw power or attaining a deeper mastery of Aspect. It is a matter of shedding the remains of one's mortal self and being reborn as something greater.[7]
Unlike the other Nightmares, the Fifth Nightmare shares more in common with the First Nightmare, as it involves two trials instead of one: a personal trial tailored specifically to the challenger and a collective trial like those faced before, both described as unimaginably brutal, with failure in either resulting in death. Success leads the Spell to facilitate Apotheosis in record-breaking time, but the transformation carries severe risk, as the changes to consciousness and sense of self cannot be controlled, and the Spell does not care whether the challenger remains themselves afterward. This uncontrollable loss of self was stated to be the true cause of the destruction of the Sun Realm civilization, whose Spirits—former Awakened who had attained godhood—ultimately devoured and destroyed their own world after losing themselves to that transformation.[7]
Traps
The Fifth Nightmare is an insidious trial filled with countless fatal traps. The first trap was the process of the unmaking, which was the Spell's way of giving its carriers a path toward Apotheosis, or reaching the state of mind needed to become a god. Since Apotheosis normally required hundreds or even thousands of years of gradual growth and learning, the Fifth Nightmare folded time in on itself, making time have little meaning. The first part of the trial had to be faced alone and was meant to unmake them as humans and rebuild them in the image of deities. This was done by forcing each challenger to face their own Domain.[8]
The unmaking itself contained several deadly dangers. The most obvious was the possibility of having one's consciousness destroyed by eternity—losing oneself entirely and dissolving in the endless torrent of lives and experiences forced upon them. Surviving required an incredibly strong will, an impossibly firm sense of self, and an absolute resolve to stay true to their goals. Even those who survived would not remain the same, because they would hardly remember who they had been or who they had wanted to become. Their previous identity as a mortal human would become pale and faint in the face of eternity, dwarfed by the accumulated experience and vast consciousness associated with a deity.[8]
Another hidden danger of the unmaking was Corruption because of remembering countless Nightmare Creatures. A too vast Domain could become one's undoing in the Fifth Nightmare by completely destroying the self, while a too weak Domain was also a danger. The change had a purpose, and escaping the unmaking too easily would make conquering the Nightmare all but impossible.[8]
The second part of the Fifth Nightmare was the conflict they had to resolve but was not certain what it was. Another trap was the threat of being swallowed by the world. Those whose consciousness had become vast enough to approach deityhood but who had not yet undergone Apotheosis faced the danger of becoming enthralled by the world and fusing with it, thereby losing their personhood and becoming elemental forces instead of Spirits.[8]
The Unmasking
Trivia
- In Chapter 2266, Sunny, despite his unparalleled talent and unique nature, is told by Eurys that he has "no chance" of becoming Sacred under his current circumstances because his world may not even last a decade, far too short for the internal transformation required.[1]
- Traditionally, carriers of the Nightmare Spell had one viable shortcut: undertaking the Fifth Nightmare, which could theoretically elevate a person to the Sacred Rank. However, Sunny is no longer a bearer of the Spell. As a result, this path is closed to him. Attempting it without the Spell's protection would only result in lethal levels of Corruption.[1]
- Apotheosis was not something one could achieve through quantity. It was quality that mattered.[9]
- Despite all the trials and separations, Sunny and Nephis' bond endured, and he realized that while he saw himself as her anchor to humanity, she might also be his.[10]
- In Chapter 2762, Sunny think that it would be possible for both Nephis and him to conquer the Fifth Nightmare and remain, if not the same, then at least faithful to the core of what made them who they were, since Sunny had mastered maintaining his sense of self and Nephis possessed an overwhelming advantage in tethering herself to her sense of self through her ardent longing and incorruptible soul.
- Nephis had a decisive advantage in the Fifth Nightmare because she was deeply anchored to her sense of self through multiple means: she was connected to billions of humans and their most ardent wishes through the Longing Domain, a connection that would most likely be enough to preserve the core of her being even during the profound transformation of Apotheosis, and even if she were stripped of that Domain, she would still possess an overwhelming tether in the form of her own ardent desire and absolute, uncompromising resolve to conquer and destroy the Nightmare Spell in a way she deemed worthy; furthermore, it was emphasized that this was no coincidence, as she possessed the [Longing] Ability, which made her soul incorruptible, allowing her to withstand the threat of losing her humanity and sense of self that defined the Fifth Nightmare.[11]
- Sunny believed he could succeed in the Fifth Nightmare because, unlike Asterion, he was a master of maintaining his sense of self intact, a skill rooted in his very nature as a shadow, which was formless and shapeless, and reinforced through relentless training to never forget himself via Shadow Dance, to the point that even the mists of the Hollow Mountains had failed to erode him into nothingness; this mastery of self-preservation meant that, despite the Fifth Nightmare's forced and dangerous transformation of consciousness required for Apotheosis, Sunny possessed a rare resilience against losing his humanity and identity, allowing him to endure the trial without being destroyed by it.[11]
- According to Asterion, being a Dreamspawn seemed have increased odds for natural Apotheosis.[12] (Detailed information here)
