Divine Lineage can bestow their wielders with additional power. Lineages were left behind by divine entities such as the gods and a daemon.[1]

Note: Possessing a lineage of a certain divine creature (Divine Lineage) doesn't mean their aspect has to be related to it as well.

Description

Deep inside his blood, Sunny noticed a barely visible hint of the golden shine. As if the radiant drop of golden liquid he had absorbed was still there, now a part of him, strongly diluted and fused into his own bloodstream. The shine was so faint that he had almost missed it.

Sunny suspected that in the light, it wouldn't be visible at all.

Boons

The Divine Lineage is described as comprehensively empowering the descendants of the gods, with each lineage focusing on one particular aspect of their being while also making its inheritor stronger and more tenacious.[2]

A Divine Lineage is an inheritance left behind by a divine being whose true power unfolds progressively as its inheritor advances along the Path of Ascension. Rather than providing an overwhelming advantage from the outset, a Divine Lineage gradually reveals more of its unfathomable potential as its bearer reaches higher Ranks. According to Sunny's observations of Nephis and the heirs of the Great Clans, the closer an inheritor comes to the Divine Rank—and therefore to the beings who originally bestowed the Lineage—the greater the portion of that inheritance they are able to wield. Its full potential can only be unlocked upon becoming a god.[3]

Nature

Reveal

Most lineages originated from Lineage Memories that outstanding or lucky individuals earned either in the First Nightmare or by exploring the Dream Realm and conquering the first Citadels of humanity. These memories allowed certain people to inherit the power of divine beings.[4]

However, the lineage of Storm God was different. Its source was not a Memory, but instead a place. Specifically, it was connected to the Eternal City and its lighthouse temple, making it unlike other divine inheritances.[4]

Transmission and Risks

Reveal

Not just anyone is fit to receive the lineage of a god. Unlike Lineage Memories, which were granted after individuals were judged worthy by the Spell, the lineage of Storm God could be arbitrarily imposed on others. The founding members of the House of Night received it through Nightwalker's Memory, but some died during the process. This mirrored the fate of the daughters of Ki Song, who were similarly exposed to a divine lineage without choice. To some, it is a deadly gift.[4]

Absorbing Blood Weave had nearly killed Sunny, even though he possessed an innate affinity to fate, which gave him some kinship with Weaver. Even with a Divine Aspect, this near-fatal experience confirmed that receiving a divine lineage is never guaranteed to succeed, even for those seemingly aligned with it.[4]

Furthermore, not every child born in the House of Night inherited the lineage.[5]

Holders

All six divine lineages are accounted for:

Shadow Weave served as the substitute for the Shadow God's Lineage that Sunny was originally meant to inherit before it was consumed by Blood Weave. Rather than granting additional power outright, it revealed an entirely new facet of the Shadow Slave Aspect that Sunny believed could never have been understood or mastered without receiving the lineage of a deity. Although it led him along a path different from that of Shadow God's Lineage, Sunny recognized it as not necessarily inferior.[9]
  • The lineage of Heart God has been inherited by the most elusive of the Sovereigns, Asterion.[1] This was confirmed in Chapter 1528 and 1613.

Partial Divine Lineages of [The Weave]:

Sunny inherited a forbidden lineage, which was secretly created by the Demon of Fate, and the blood of Weaver suggests he may have inherited the Forgotten God.[12]

Great Clans

Main article: Great Clans

The Great Clans were built by those who inherited the Divine Lineages:[18][6]

Lineage and Aspect

Lineage and Aspect did not have to be directly connected.[19]

  • Mordret carried the lineage of War God but the core of his Aspect seemed to be connected to reflections and mirrors rather than something to do with warfare.[19]
  • Sunny carried the lineage of Weaver but possessed an Aspect tied to Shadow God.[19]
  • Nephis carried the lineage of Sun God, but her Aspect was connected to the mythical Nephilim.[19]

Generation who had uncovered Lineage Memories

The First Generation who uncovered Lineage Memories consisted of four figures:[20]

Ki Song became the fifth to inherit a Divine Lineage in the next generation.[20] The sixth is assumed to the Lord of Shadows, who was assumed to inherit the last Divine Lineage of Shadow God.[20]

Trivia

  • In Chapter 550, Sunny obtained the Shadow God's drop of ichor as his second relic for the mastery of Shadow Dance[21]. However, it was devoured by [Blood Weave] in Chapter 551.
  • It was implied that Nephis inherited her lineage attribute from her mother.[22]
  • It was mentioned in Nether's writing on the fifth level of Ebony Tower that the Gods created all living creatures, but only those born of the gods and their descendants have divine lineage. They forbade the seven daemons to sire offspring.[14]
  • Sunny is wary of those who had Beast Lineage, it was hard to hide from them even when Sunny is in his shadow form. Hel was able to smell death which refer to Sunny. Seishan was also able to smell from Kai's blood that he was stressed.[23]
  • In Chapter 2818, it was mentioned that [The Blood], the core of Beast God's Lineage, had been inherited by Seishan from her mother, Ki Song. By inheriting it, she had inherited power over all the rest who had Beast God's blood in their veins.
  • None of those who had inherited the Lineages of the great gods became vessels for the dead gods.[9]
