Components is the term used by Sunny to describe the unique qualities of a Citadel.[1]
All Citadels had unique qualities. It was unknown if these Components were innate or added by the Spell but was believed that they were built upon existing traits and made them accessible to humans. Only a Saint who bound the Citadel to their soul could command it, making use of the Components, and the Spell made the process easier for them.[1]
Design
Components of Citadels are created by the Nightmare Spell. However, the Spell did not invent these powers entirely from scratch. Instead, in most cases, it took the innate qualities of existing places of power and rebuilt them into more usable forms for its carriers, adding a universal foundation to all of them.[2]
Most Citadels are designed to be ruled by Saints, but the Great Citadels are intended for Sovereigns, with their Components reflecting this distinction in strength and scope. For example, the Night Garden's Component allows a Supreme to anchor both ends of a Dream Gate in the same world.[2]
Each Component is shaped by the unique nature of its associated Citadel. In the case of Ravenheart, for example, whose Component grants terraforming abilities — reshaping climate, enriching soil, or potentially laying waste to entire regions. However, such power is complex and delicate; its use requires great care and knowledge, as mismanagement can easily harm rather than help. The volcanoes and fertile lands were not created by a Component originally — instead, the Jade Palace possessed innate power that the Nightmare Spell later encoded into a Component.[2]
Initially, it was believed that Domains suppressed the seeds of Corruption within Aspirants. However, Nephis and Sunny discovered that this effect was not due to a Sovereign's personal power. Instead, it was a function of the Citadels created by the Spell. As such, Domains like the Sword and Song Domains—which were built upon Citadels—offered tangible protection against Corruption.[3]

More prominent components are ones like the Great Citadels or the Ivory Tower and lesser ones are like the Sanctuary of Noctis.[1]
Nameless Temple's Components are powerful but not on the level of Great Citadels or Ivory Tower but far more prominent than Sanctuary of Noctis.[1]
