Corruption is a dangerous, transformative force originating from the primordial Void, capable of altering minds, souls, and the very essence of beings. Exposure to Corruption occurs through forbidden knowledge or contact with entities already tainted, and it manifests as a force that can both consume and reshape those affected.[1]
It was the influence of the Void seeping through the walls of existence that caged it. Therefore, knowledge of the Void was the source of Corruption as well.[2]
Etymology
"What you have named Corruption is the influence of the Void. It does not corrupt things — it simply changes them. These things it changes are not malevolent or vile, just like the things it spares are not pure and good. They are merely different. However..."
"There exists a contradiction between those of us who have been touched by the Void and those of us who have not, indeed. That contradiction gives birth to conflict. Those of my kind who are young and weak are not abominable... they are pitiful. They are neither of the Void nor of the Flame. They belong to both, but are welcomed by neither." — Puppeteer to Sunny about the Corruption, Chapter 2397 To a Flame |
"Corruption" is a human name for the influence of the Void. According to Puppeteer, it is not evil in itself, but has been defined as such by those who live within the Flame. The Puppeteer emphasizes that the words humans use—"corruption," "fiend," "pure," "vile"—shape perception and reality. What is called Corruption is not an act of malevolence, but a transformation by the Void's touch. However, a contradiction arises between beings that have been touched by the Void and those that have not, and this contradiction is the source of conflict.[3]
Beings that belong to both the Void and the Flame, but fully accepted by neither, are caught in a state of existential contradiction. This condition creates a deep inner conflict that becomes a battlefield within them. As a result, they are driven into madness and confusion. These beings are not inherently monstrous; rather, they are pitiful—young and weak creatures who suffer because of their divided nature. Their very existence becomes a war, and this war compels them to seek resolution.[3]
Effects
The effects of Corruption are exemplified by Torment in Chapter 2833. Her consciousness is shown to be fundamentally incompatible with reality, causing perpetual mental anguish that compels her to project the same suffering onto all other living beings. This state of madness transcends ordinary insanity, reducing her to an existence driven by the instinct to destroy, torment, and consume the Flame of others—the only act capable of temporarily alleviating her agony. Despite this overwhelming corruption, remnants of her former self persist, manifested through contradictory feelings toward the Flame, which she simultaneously hates, longs for, and mourns. However, these vestiges of humanity are rendered largely meaningless by the loss of her autonomy. Prior to her corruption, her mind had been deliberately altered with erased memories, false recollections, and behavioral constraints, leaving her to function as a puppet bound to predetermined actions.[4]
Cleansing Corruption
The first way for a soul to be cleansed of Corruption is death. Awakened was used to collect soul shards from Nightmare Creatures, but the remnant fragments of corrupted souls were pure and untainted. It was because death was a weapon to destroy Corruption.[5]
Carriers of Nightmare Spell had a tiny bead of hideous darkness within their soul. The Seed of Nightmare would not bloom into a Category One Nightmare Gate unless certain conditions were met. Through the final stage of Awakening, in one's soul, sparks of light fused under pressure, forming a luminous sea. The bead of darkness dissolved in the light, destroying it. It can be said that the First Nightmare was to push the infected into Awakening and destroy the Seed, preventing Corruption from blooming. Awakening was the first step toward divinity, and coming closer to divinity would render one immune to the weaker manifestation of its enemy. This was the second way that a soul could be cleansed of Corruption.[5]
Forms and Origin
Corruption is not monolithic; it takes diverse forms and originates from multiple sources, each with varying potency. One example of its modest manifestation is the Seeds of Nightmare that bloom in the hearts of Aspirants. These seeds can be destroyed simply by forming a soul core. Many Sleepers have eradicated them with the aid of the Spell, while others accomplished it independently by Awakening naturally to remove them.[1]
The Path of Ascension inherently opposes Corruption, providing increased resistance to those who climb its hierarchy. Domains and Sovereigns also suppress the development of Corruption within their subjects, preventing its seeds from fully manifesting. Even when exposure occurs, individuals can resist and combat Corruption through willpower and mastery over their mind, soul, and essence.[1]
Despite these resistances, Corruption remains the most perilous force in existence, capable of reshaping the nature of beings and causing profound transformations that are difficult to reverse.[1]
Background
Corruption had existed long before Weaver created the Spell. The ancient people had not used the term "Nightmare Creatures". Instead, they simply called those creatures consumed by vile darkness as the "Corrupted".[6]
Gods and Daemons had fought against the Unknown in ancient times and then Awakened fought against the Corrupted during the Age of Heroes.[6]
Creatures were not the only ones who could be corrupted. Humans could succumb to the corruption as well.[6]
Corruption was the result of the Void influencing that which had been created by the gods.[7] (Refer to Truth and Lie)
Trivia
- Humans did not know much much about Corruption but they attributed it to the vile nature of the Nightmare Creatures to the Spell.[6]
- There were humans, and there were creatures, like the original Saint or Nightmare. It was only after they succumbed to Corruption did the "noble creatures" become abominations.[8]
- Corruption is a gradual process.[9]
- It was possible that the spreading of Corruption is a sign that the seals containing the void were weakening.[10] (See also Myth of Creation)
- Nephis is the only character so far to be immune to Corruption due to her passive Aspect Ability, [Longing].[11][12]
- According to Asterion,
- The state of Torment's mind as a Defiled was narrated in her point of view, one of the memories seen by Cassie, in Chapter 2833.
