“ Everything I've done… everything I've endured… it was all for this. For this moment. It's so impossibly hard, to break fate. No matter how fiercely you attack it, it strikes back with ten times the might. My True Name, Song of the Fallen… it means that I am destined to witness the fates of others, and carry the memories of them long after they are gone. To be a witness, powerless to change what I see. Well… I refuse. I don't want a fate like that, at all. ”

― Cassie to Sunny,
Chapter 1557 Terrifying Existence

This summarizes Cassie's plan to break fate.

Purpose

Cassie's intention is to create a weapon to break fate.[1]

Cassie had been pursuing the same goal as Sunny, who had sworn to break the chains of fate. She had subtly manipulated events to achieve this goal, suffering in silence as she pushed towards it. All to give Sunny back the choice she had taken from him. She had created a moment where he had an opportunity to free himself from fate. He could fulfill his ardent wish and win back his freedom by destroying the Shadow Bond and his [Fated] Attribute. However, Cassie went beyond to forge a weapon to resist fate, a single variable that would change the entire flow of fate.[2]

Plan

It is unclear whether she planned these events or if they were mere coincidences. Her design was akin to the tapestry of fate, with unforeseen circumstances affecting the details but remaining minor disturbances in the flow she willed into existence. Sunny could only determine the points in time when Cassie influenced the events openly and try to glean her purpose from that.[3]

Revelation

Summary

Cassie revealed that she had planned the events of the cycle from the start, even before the Nightmare. It started when Sunny came to her back on the Chained Isles to recruit her to challenge the Second Nightmare together. She told the vision of them dying in the winter. From there, she had already planned until they arrived in Verge.[1][3]

She even manipulated the battle formation during the seven Saints' gathering for Sunny to finish off the Defiled Seeker of Truth. Her grandiose plan, weaving everyone, from the Fire Keepers to the leaders of the Great Clans, into her bidding.[1] She actually knew about Mordret and confirmed everything Sunny thought.[3]

Cassie had needed the cohort to enter the Second Nightmare sooner and in the company of the Prince of Nothing. His escape led to a conflict with the great clan Valor. By the time Nephis returned, she was forced to accept their terms and became an adopted daughter of Valor. The consequences of this event spread outward into the future, with Mordret being a singular existence, his freedom to roam the two worlds brought significant change to the events of the Second Nightmare to the conclusion of the war the great clans had waged in Antarctica.[3]

Manipulated Events

It was unknown how many strings Cassie had pulled from behind the curtain, how many people she had influenced, and how many coincidences she had engineered to arrange everything according to her wishes.[4]

Summary
  • When Cassie told Sunny that Mordret cannot be allowed to enter the Ivory Tower.[5][4]
The goal was actually not to prevent Mordret from entering the Ivory Tower but instead make sure that he entered the Ebony Tower to collect whatever it was that Nether had left there in the Ebony Tower. Mordret had not shared that information completely, but he did mention that after leaving it he will be much harder to find with the help of divination.[6] The vague symbols Sunny had seen on Mordret's soul core were the result of that[7].[4]
  • Sunny and Cassie met Morgan at the Academy on the day that Nephis returned from her Second Nightmare.[4][8]
  • Nephis spent a month living in Sunny's house upon her return[9][10][11], then announced her decision to join Valor at the ball[12], making him leave in anger and enlist for the Southern Campaign[13]. That is so he was present in the Antarctic Center during the battle against the Remnant of the Jade Queen[14], and received the Sin of Solace[15].[4]
  • Cassie helped Sunny escape the tunnel[16] and manipulated the battle against Nightmare Creatures as Morgan's adviser[17].[4]
  • Cassie ensured Sunny was in the right place at the right time to deal the final blow to the Fallen Titan, Defiled Seeker of Truth[18], receiving the Mirror of Truth[19].[4]
  • She was present at the Battle of the Black Skull and entered the Nightmare of the Great River with six other powerful Masters[20].[4]

Third Nightmare

Somewhere near Verge, while the rest of the cohort were scouting, she acted suspicious so that she and Sunny can talk alone. Cassie revealed that she can perceive Sin of Solace's wraith through Sunny and can also perceive through his shadows. She purposefully displayed her secrets for Sunny to see, such as the chamber with the well[21] and the countless journals stored in a runic chest[21].[22]

In the Third Nightmare, the Sin of Solace and the Mirror of Truth are two memories that hold significant importance. The Sin of Solace, containing the whisper of the builder of the Tomb, was responsible for creating the Mad Prince and introducing chaos to the Great River. The Mirror of Truth, on the other hand, was the sole instrument that could replicate Nephis's Longing Ability, making them immune to Corruption for a short period.[4]

Cassie planned to use Sunny as a weapon to destroy fate. What she wanted and how she planned to break fate was revealed to be the Well of Wishes.[4]

Sunny was told that reaching the Estuary would bring his wish to be free from his bond and fate. Cassie offered him the choice to leave and used Guiding Light to show him the way through the mists of the Source, as long as he didn't give another True Name to it. Once reaching the Estuary, he can use the Mirror of Truth to push to its heart and find freedom. Cassie hopes that Sunny will choose to stay with them despite everything, as the bond between them is based on trust.[23]

Cassie claimed that reaching the Estuary before the Nightmare ends will lead to freedom from fate. He will be fateless. The strings that hold him like a puppet will set him free, and his connection to Nephis will be broken as a result.[23]

The Mad Prince entered the Estuary in search of his freedom but failed to resist the Defilement, leading to endless cycles. Torment engineered the current cycle to ensure all members of the cohort survive. The end is already inevitable, and Nephis storms Verge and kills the First Seeker.[23]

Torment's Message

The message Torment had to deliver is related to Guiding Light. Torment's power blocked the memory, and the seal was removed once they reached Verge. After Cassie used it to activate the Guiding Light, the memory of it was erased from her mind. To whom or to what the True Name belongs to is powerful and can strain the mind and soul even just a few moments.[2]

True Name
The True Name Torment had delivered to Cassie at the cost of her life was the Thieving Bird's.[24]

Trivia

  • In Chapter 1561, Sunny had chosen to break fate.
Throwing away all the complicated thoughts about the nature of freedom and what it meant to be free in this world, there are only three things left. Sunny himself, Nephis, and the connection between them. He had previously run away from her twice, once in the Dark City and once at the Valor clan ball. However, he knows that any relationship between the current them is impossible as long as Shadow Bond exists. By abandoning her on the shores of Verge, he would be moving towards her instead of running away, as only by becoming free of her could Sunny be with her.[2]
  • Cassie's motivation is that she wants to save the world for selfish reasons. She explained that the world is doomed and that most people don't realize the limited time they have left.[27]
