The Red Colosseum is a blood-soaked arena, the cult of murderous glory that Solvane built. It existed for one single purpose, which is to find, or create, a warrior capable of killing her.[1]

Description

Usually, a coliseum is a theater of death where slaves fought each other for the entertainment of the crowd. However, this coliseum was rather strange as slaves are predominantly wild beasts and monsters of all kinds as opposed to captured humans.[2]

There were wooden fences built throughout the arena, partitioning it into many small enclosures, each connected to a next one by a rusty iron gate. The edges of the colosseum were made of stone walls. Three sturdy fences formed the rest of the killing box, sharp spikes mounted on them to prevent the combatants from trying to escape.[2]

There are grooves that have been cut through the stone of the arena and they were as ancient as the Red Colosseum itself. However, their purpose is not to channel blood from the arena but actually a runic circle.[3]

Collar

It was a simple piece of enchanted metal, with no lock or any other way of opening it. It was almost impossible to damage or destroy, but the enchantment itself was not very complicated. Its function was to tie the slaves to the vast and incredibly powerful enchantments of the arena itself. The enchantments were harnessed by the Warmongers to maintain the cages, prevent the slaves from escaping by any means, mundane or magical, and ensure that they behaved while being transported to and back from the arena. The inability to connect to the Spell was a side effect of these measures.[4]

Audience

People seemed to be joyful and proud, almost solemn. It was as though they were genuinely happy for the gladiators. The crowd was undulating and shifting, singing one word over and over again: "Glory! Glory! Glory!"[2]

Gaining Freedom

If one is brave or righteous enough then they would eventually be given a wooden sword, and earn the right to fight for their freedom.[5]

Background

The white amphitheater, and the arena it surrounded, were the derelict of the true Kingdom of Hope. It was suspected that the theater had not always been a battle arena. It was built out of something from a place that must have been a quarry once and had served as the source of the white stones used to construct the aerial bridges and aqueducts. Later, it had been turned into a theater that the Warmongers usurped and turned into an arena, soaking the ancient stones with so much blood that they turned red.[4]

Trivia

  • Inside, there are rows of hanging cages of different sizes, and each of them imprisoned a creature of some sort. There were monstrous wolves, stone gargoyles, giant slithering worms, bulging mounds of flesh with gaping circular maws, and all kinds of abominations. There were even cages that contained humans.[6]
  • Limited by the walls of the Colosseum, Sunny's connection to the Spell was cut off by the steel collar on his neck. While the Spell was gone, his Aspect and flaw remained.[7][8]
  • The runic circle on the ancient arena was the canvas Hope had used to create her sorcery.[3]
  • The source of power that fueled the enchantments of the ancient theater came from the jubilation, elation, and sincere excitement of the crowd of spectators. It is the basic principle of how the enchantments keep the slaves tied to the Red Colosseum functioned.[9]
