Nightmare Creatures
First Wave
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| - | [Dormant Beast]. A creature that resembled a hound with bloodred bone spikes from its mottled, black fur. It can produce a guttural, hoarse roar.[3] |
Second Wave
Third Wave
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| - | Larger beasts, more terrifying than the hounds and their masters, demons of the mysterious Barrow similar to the desiccated huntsmen, but much taller, stronger, and better equipped. They wielded masterfully crafted flint weapons and armor made out of rotten leather and bone, their empty eyes burning with hungry red flames.[6] |
| - | [Fallen Monster].[7] A creature resembled a giant bison, it had black fur mottled and rotten, a ridge of long, scarlet bone spikes piercing the hide along the spine. Its head was crowned with two jagged, bloodred horns. It was twice as tall as Sunny and weights at least twenty times more.[6] Just like the ancient hunters, this bison is a wraith. A corpse reanimated by the malevolent spirit of red flame.[6] |
Gate Guardian
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Barrow Chieftain | [Fallen Tyrant]. It was an ancient chieftain more than four meters tall, his desiccated body resembling that of the primeval hunters and demons that passed through the gate earlier, but much more frightening. He wielded a long spear, its blade cut out of a single slab of obsidian and covered in so many stains of ancient, dried blood. The giant was wearing intricate leather armor, much more robust and imposing than those of the lesser wraiths, with strips of strange, bluish iron woven onto it.[8] His wrists bore dozens of bracelets made out of iron and bone, and on his shoulders was a cloak fashioned out of the hide of some terrifying monster. The skull of the creature served as his helm, and his face was covered by a disturbing burial mask, its features were twisted and bestial. The mask and the skull on his head each had three eyes, all six emanating intense, malevolent red radiance.[8] Ability |
History
Prelude
A sudden notification about a gate activity alerted everyone but the problem was there was not enough time to evacuate. The earliest government force would be able to arrive at the Gate was in thirteen minutes after it had opened.[1] Sunny didn't have time to consider things but he decided to fight in front of the Gate as Mongrel.[2]
There are only six Awakened who answered the call, Mongrel together with six other Awakened, one with an Awakened Aspect that enhances agility, two Dormant Aspects centered around endurance and strength, and the last two can perform ranged elemental attacks.[9]
Battle
For the first few seconds, Mongrel managed to not allow any of the abominations to move past him and escape into the streets. He was to kill as many of the dormant beasts as he could, to bring the augmentation of the Blood Blossom to considerable strength, and throw corpses in front of the gate to make it harder for the stronger abominations to enter the real world. The few that did manage to slip by were quickly finished by the Awakened staying behind.[5]
After six minutes, the situation turned terrible and the other Awakened began to act. They performed well with sufficient coordination and foresight, doing everything in their power to slow down the tide of approaching monsters.[7]
In the end, Mongrel was forced to face the gate guardian in his not-so-good condition and was caught by the monstrous chieftain of the Barrow Wraiths slowly being crushed.[8][10] Meanwhile on Rain's side, few Nightmare Creature was able to breach the school. Rain was moments away from being eaten by a beast when Saint, who flashed out of the shadows, saved her and killed the abomination.[10] Back to Sunny's side, Jet arrived and saved him from the Fallen Tyrant.[11]
Aftermath
The government forces arrived, relieving the pressure from the six Awakened who fought at the Gate. In the end, the Gate was contained with no civilian casualties. Master Jet ended up killing the tyrant. When Sunny noticed a team of Awakened enter the school to secure the students, he dismissed Saint.[11]
