The Imprisonment at Night Temple is related to Cassie's vision where she saw herself and Sunny die in winter.[1]
History
Sunny invited Cassie to challenge the Nightmare along with him, Effie, and Kai. According to their agreement, Cassie will help Sunny go to the Night Temple and help to conquer the Second Nightmare in return she wants Sunny's help to kill the creature that dwells on Shipwreck Island[2]
Prelude
Sunny and Cassie finally arrived in the Night Temple, due to the rules they can't summon echoes or memories inside and go through an inspection.[3][4] Suddenly, Sunny heard Mordret's voice again, his voice still friendly but it was much colder, and deeper beneath the surface.[4]
As it turned out, he was fooled by Mordret to come to the Night Temple along with the mirror shard. The next moment he was interrogated by Pierce about the mirror shard when he suddenly heard the sound of breaking mirrors.[4] It seemed Mordret was finally broken free from his prison that which prompted Pierce to order the sentinels to seal the temple and destroy the gateway. After that, he also ordered the sentinels to lock up Cassie and Sunny in the lesser cell.[5]

Inside the cage, runes started to glow, draining the essence out of their souls at a terrifying speed. Without anything to do, they discussed things about the Night Temple. As it turned out the whole citadel is a prison that is meant to contain Mordret.[6] Then, four Lost warriors and Master Welthe came to interrogate and inform them that the temple can only be unsealed by Cormac, who was supposed to return after a month.[7]
After the sentinels left, Sunny asked Cassie if she was able to take a look at their attributes. She revealed that she also saw the name and rank of their Aspects which she can do after she awakened. Sometime after they were given a late supper consisting of synthetic paste. In the middle of the night, Cassie had a vision[Full Circle]. The next day, only three Losts continued their duty.[8]
Their jailers continue to bring them food and water once every day. With each day, the lost looked more disheveled and exhausted. And on the seventh day, a long drowning shriek echoed from the cold stones. The next day, only two Lost remained. Hours passed, then suddenly a loud bang, and after a few moments, blood flowed from beneath the door. After that day, no one came to feed them.[9]
Time crawled slowly, and their hunger grew. It wasn't long before they also run out of water. The feeling of thirst was absolutely maddening, torturous, and suffocating. Then the oil run out and the cell became darker.[10] Days after the flame of the oil died out, a crazed Lost came back to kill them. Before the Lost kill Sunny, the Covetous Coffer bit its leg and was dismissed. Using the essence returned to him, he was able to kill the Lost. Cassie was able to open their cell and moved him out of there.[11]
After they have rested and drunk their fill, they explored the temple to find food and assess the situation.[12] And once satiated, they cleaned themselves and finally wore their armor. The Night Temple seemed completely deserted and the scent of death permeated the air.[13] Entering the hall, they were welcomed by the cruel scene of the massacre. But before they left, they tried to open the gate but it won't budge. They then decided to check the gateway.[14]
They met with the survivors and were taken to the Inner Sanctum.[15][16] In there, Welthe talked about Mordret, his past, aspect and the possibility of him possessing Sunny.[17] The following days, Mordret killed Lost one after another letting everyone know he had entered the inner sanctum.[18][19] In the end, Pierce and Welthe fell into his trap.[20][21]
After disposing of the echoes sent to kill them, Sunny followed the two Masters. They were greeted by a bloodbath made by Mordret and eventually Sunny took Mordret's side.[22] In the end, Sunny killed Pierce, and Welthe's body was possessed by Mordret.[23]
Mordret, Sunny, and Cassie were the only ones left in the entire Night temple.[23] Mordret then moved to his next plan to possess Sunny, he revealed a bit about himself, Asterion, and knowledge of Sunny's Aspect, Flaw, and True Name.[24][25] Meanwhile, Cassie tried to trap Mordret but failed.[26] With no other choice, Cassie convinced Sunny to let Mordret in his Soul Sea and had a short battle of Souls.[26] After Mordret failed to get Sunny, a harrowing game of hide and seek took place until Saint Cormac unsealed the Night Temple.[27][28][29]
Unraveling the Vision

- Mordret is still alive and is speculated to be hidden in one of the mirror shards falling into the Sky Below.[32]

Trivia
- Mirror trap - A very special artifact created by the elders of the Valor clan. It is used to capture and bind Mordret. It was a wooden box and inside of it was a single piece of broken mirror laying on the black fabric. The ritual to use this takes time to perform.[20] It is a large wooden box, its surface engraved with a complicated weave of a beautiful but disorienting pattern.[25]
- Mordret was not all-powerful. No matter how many soul cores he possessed, he was clearly not powerful enough to obliterate his jailers completely.[21]
- It was not an accident that the guards had been killed in the usual brutal and ghastly fashion, but the wounded sentinels simply had their throats cut. He simply wasn't capable enough to do more unnoticed. His true goal was to separate the Lost from each other with Sunny's unwilling help so that he could kill them, divided. He also didn't need a mirror to enter someone's soul. He possessed them by looking into their eyes. After all, the eyes were the mirror of the soul. He had purposefully kept this facet of his power hidden, only using the mirrors and mundane reflections to take vessels, thus creating a false impression that this was the only way he could achieve it.[21]
- Mordret revealed his connection to Asterion and wondered if he knows about another Dreamspawn who was also the daughter of Smile of Heaven and Broken Sword.[24]
