“ You've been mesmerized by the ancient fiend, Soul Devouring Tree, and are being turned into its thrall. Once the process is complete, there will be no escape. ”

― Cassie to Sunny,
Chapter 86 Final Clue

Soul Devouring Tree, also known as "Soul Tree", is the Nightmare Creature that nearly enthralled Cassie, Nephis, and Sunny in Ashen Barrow.[3]

Description

This tree rose into the sky like a tower, its branches wide enough to cover the whole Ashen Barrow in their shade. Its bark was as black as the water of the Dark Sea, while its leaves were as red as blood. The crimson crown of this majestic tree looked incredibly vibrant and magnificent in contrast to the gray sky.[4]

This magnificent tree stands atop the Ashen Barrow with its onyx branches and vibrant scarlet leaves. It looked striking and majestic. Its fruits, hanging between the scarlet leaves, were round and appetizing.[5]

According to Sunny, the succulent, juicy fruit was probably the most delicious thing he had ever tasted. It was both nourishing and refreshing, with a rich texture and a soft lingering aftertaste. The ruby fresh practically melted on his tongue.[6]

Ability

It has powerful mind hexes that can subdue creatures and make them want to spend the rest of their lives taking care of the tree. In return, the tree gives them its Soul Fruits which could be used as a substitute for soul shards. It is suspected previous victims' souls are trapped within its fruits.[5]

Background

The origin of the Soul Devouring Tree is a black seed that lay upon a mountain of corpses forming a blood-soaked hill. The black seed lay floating in a pool of blood there and grew to become this terror.[7]

History

Reveal

When Sunny went back to Forgotten Shore one of the things he did was pay the Soul Devouring Tree a visit, after all he had made a promise to destroy the tree, which had evolved into a massive insidious fiend. The tree towered above the sea of ashen dust like a majestic mountain. Its bark was as black as the lightless sky, while its leaves were as red as blood. The crimson crown of the magnificent tree had used to cover the Ashen Barrow in its shade, but it was much richer and more expansive now, reaching far into the crater.[2]

The Soul Devourer had survived the rays or annihilating sun, leaving no competitor on the Forgotten Shore with the Crimson Terror and the Dark Sea gone. The insidious fiend growing on the Ashen Barrow would have used the vacuum to enhance its power. The Soul Devourer had been an Awakened Terror before, now it was a Fallen Terror.[2]

The Soul Devourer required protection, so it diligently attracted Nightmare Creatures that survived the scorching sun. Most of whom were Awakened from the coral labyrinth, with a few Fallen creatures but none of a high enough Class.[2]

Trivia

  • It was a bolt of lightning that ignited the fallen leaves of the Soul Tree that created the sea of ash, Ashen Barrow.[8]
