LO49 is the abbreviation for "Lunar Observatory Forty-Nine".[3] It serves as an important research facility guarded by Awakened and an Ascended commander.[4]
Location
This very important research installation is located at the southernmost point of Antarctica.[1]
Research
The research being conducted in this installation is perfectly safe. There are no practical experiments being conducted at the premises.[5]
Structure
The facility looked more like a small fortress settlement than a scientific base. It was perched dangerously close to the ocean shore, and had a thick wall surrounding it, with powerful turrets aiming at the dark waves. There was a large dome-like structure towering above the formidable fortress, painted white on the backdrop of the black sky. It resembled a giant, perfectly smooth egg.

There is a spacious chamber that resembles a lecture hall.[5]
Facilities
LO49 is a large facility. There is a mess hall where they could eat, relax in one of the recreational lounges, or even visit a small library.[6]

There are about five hundred scientists and civilian staff members.[5]
Background
It was a former observatory. Its telescope was dismantled and repurposed as a research facility.[3] There were around a hundred of these observatories built when the Nightmare Spell first appeared, but most of them are now sealed and abandoned.[3]
The first registered or documented case of Nightmare Spell infection occurred in one of the moon settlements. No one really knows where the Spell came from, but many point to Luna as its origin, or at least the point of contact. So, many decades ago, there was a strong desire to study the moon.[3]
As it turned out, looking at the moon for too long can lead to dire consequences. The LO program was canceled after casualties among the researchers, and the observatories were sealed.[3]
