This summarizes the cohort's expedition to the edges of Forgotten Shore.

History

When Sunny reunited with his old cohort, each reacted differently — Nephis remained composed but tense, Caster hid cold displeasure behind politeness, Effie was shocked and teasingly disbelieving, while Cassie appeared older and burdened. After Caster secured their talk with a silencing Memory, they discussed the Bright Lord, Gunlaug, who was preparing for war. Nephis revealed her request: Sunny was to take Effie to his hideout and protect her for a week.[1]

She explained that Gunlaug planned to use Effie as leverage to force her into a losing confrontation. Effie's trouble stemmed from a clash with Gunlaug's Guards—those Sunny had unknowingly killed. With help from an ally inside the Bright Castle, they learned Gunlaug's move was imminent. When Sunny asked why only a week, Nephis revealed their true plan: to leave the Dark City.[2]

Unfolding a detailed map, Nephis explained her strategy to cross the Labyrinth and reach the southern mountains, where a lost expedition had vanished fifteen years ago. Their goal was to recover something valuable left behind, not escape. Guided by Cassie's visions, Nephis believed a safe route existed and trusted only Cassie and Sunny to watch her back. Though conflicted, Sunny agreed to protect Effie—forgetting, once again, to name his price.[3]

Prelude

A week later, Sunny endured his time as Effie's reluctant guardian until Nephis' group gathered to start the expedition. Kai unexpectedly joined them, and Sunny agreed to come along only as a paid mercenary—on the condition that they help him slay the Black Knight afterward.[4]

To prepare, Sunny unveiled fifty Awakened soul shards and traded them for useless Memories under his so-called Sunny's Brilliant Emporium. Each member absorbed ten shards, greatly enhancing their power. After strengthening his Stone Saint, Sunny joined Nephis, Caster, Effie, Kai, and Cassie as they departed the Dark City for the Labyrinth, beginning their journey across the Forgotten Shore.[5]

Events

Pursuer

Reveal

As Sunny trailed behind the cohort and spoke with Kai, he learned that the Dark City's population was collapsing and that Kai joined the expedition to face the inevitable rather than wait for extinction, leaving Sunny troubled by the grim future—just before Cassie warned that something was following them.[6] After Cassie sensed they were being followed, Sunny used his shadow to scout and discovered that their pursuer was Harus—the Bright Lord's feared executioner.[7]

The Catacombs

Reveal

Effie led the group to escape the unstoppable Harus through a perilous route via the fallen lighthouse, urging everyone to jump into a dark crevice swarming with Nightmare Creatures.[8] They plunged into ancient catacombs, armed themselves, and followed Effie through bone-filled tunnels until a living skeleton emerged from the dark.[9]

Ambushed by undead that endlessly reassembled, the cohort fought through waves of immortal monsters while Sunny, Cassie, and Kai joined the battle—Sunny holding the rear with growing skill as the onslaught intensified.[10][11] Pushed past his limits, Sunny unleashed Stone Saint after Nephis' flames gave a brief reprieve, only for Effie to warn that the fight was merely a warm-up.[12] Fighting on with pure skill and resolve, the weary group carved through the horde until reaching a vast chasm spanned by a frail rope bridge.[13]

While Nephis and the Stone Saint held back the undead, Sunny stayed behind to buy time, ordered the bridge destroyed, and—trapped with no escape—leapt into the abyss.[14] Sunny narrowly survived jumping into a dark abyss by using his enchanted dagger, Prowling Thorn, to swing across and climb back up—shocking his teammates, enduring pain and exhaustion, and later realizing in embarrassment that Kai could have simply flown him over the chasm.[15]

Lord of the Dead

Reveal

After surviving the skeleton horde, Sunny and the cohort found themselves in the damp, sea-scented catacombs beneath the Dark City, where Effie warned they must escape before the tide flooded the tunnels; as they descended deeper, she revealed her grim past experience there and cautioned that the only way out led through a chamber guarded by the Lord of the Dead—a monstrous being surrounded by the countless skeletons of the city's long-dead inhabitants.[16]

In a vast underground chamber beneath the headless statue, Sunny and the cohort discovered a towering mountain of human bones—the true body of the Lord of the Dead, a colossal Fallen Tyrant made from the remains of the ancient city's people—which began to awaken and attack just as they prepared to escape through the broken dome above.[17]

Mysterious Key

Reveal

As the colossal Lord of the Dead began to awaken and thrash, the cohort scrambled to escape through the dome above while Sunny, spotting a faint golden glow within the mountain of bones, risked his life to retrieve it—pulling out a small, radiant iron key just before a wave of weakness and terror overtook him.[18]

Sunny was attacked by a massive Fallen leech that drained his blood faster than he could fight back, forcing him to consider cutting off his arm to survive—until his blood's hidden poison killed the creature instead, allowing him to seize its soul shard and escape the awakening Lord of the Dead, after which Nephis healed his wounds as they finally emerged from the Dark City.[19]

While resting by the giant statue after their escape, Sunny reflected on the tragic fate of the Dark City's people, examined his new gains—including the Ascended Memory Blood Arrow and a mysterious key—and, though unsure of their worth, sensed that the key he had nearly died to obtain would one day prove vital.[20]

Journey to the South

Reveal

After a brief rest, the weary cohort resumed their journey, circling the Dark City's eastern ruins toward the Labyrinth before finally escaping the crater—only to find themselves trudging through a coral maze infested with metal-webbed, spider-like Nightmare Creatures that ambushed them just as Sunny tempted fate by hoping nothing would attack.[21]

The cohort easily defeated a group of armored iron spiders in the Labyrinth, harvested their remains, and continued on to a massive, ruined marble arch where they prepared to spend the night—exhausted but relieved to find no monsters above as darkness and the black tide consumed the coral maze below.[22]

Clearing the Nest

Reveal

The cohort fought through brutal days in the crimson Labyrinth, reached the brood mother's lair beneath a headless statue, defeated the iron spider swarm, and discovered within the nest that the Matriarch had birthed the Fallen Beasts and used other creatures—including humans—as incubators, prompting Nephis to burn everything in purifying fire before they moved on.[23]

Crossing the Canyon

Reveal

Sunny and the cohort summoned and rode the headless stone colossus through the flooded Labyrinth, battling monstrous eel-like creatures, swarming locusts, and flower-parasitized primates while enduring storms and deadly darkness, witnessing the colossus defeat an abyssal leviathan and surviving the onslaught with Nephis' light, before finally reaching the mist-shrouded mountains to rest and prepare for their search for the lost expedition.[24]

Sunny and the cohort camped safely at the southern edge of the Forgotten Shore, beyond the reach of the dark sea, and after surveying the surrounding terrain, learned from Nephis that they were north of the deadly Hollow Mountains, a region even more perilous than the Shore, and prepared to continue their journey toward the Crimson Spire and the lost expedition.[25]

Lost Expedition

Reveal

Sunny and the cohort cautiously descended into the quarry, examined the shattered stone demon's corpse, and confirmed from the missing soul shards and a carefully arranged pile of rocks that it had been slain by humans, marking the site as a grave and evidence of the lost expedition's presence.[26]They cautiously descended into the deep, pristine mine beneath the Hollow Mountains, reflecting on the deadly potential of both their own group and the lost First Lord's cohort, while Sunny marveled at the well-preserved ancient carvings that seemed to hold answers to long-standing mysteries.[27]

Sunny led the cohort safely down the bottomless mine shaft, discovering the remains of a colossal bone worm and an abandoned campsite of the lost expedition, before venturing deeper into the dark tunnels to reach a wide, black underground river where a pale wooden boat awaited them.[28] He guided the cohort across the mist-shrouded dark river with their eyes sealed in wax as warned by Cassie, using his Shadow Sense to navigate safely to the far shore, then led them into an ancient, expertly crafted underground tunnel maze where he suddenly sensed the presence of a human shadow unlike any other.[29]

Finally, he led the group to the shore of a second subterranean river, marking the expedition's next boundary.[30] The cohort across the second dark river, finally emerging from the mist-filled maze, where they discovered the skeleton of the First Lord sitting peacefully on the stone shore, and witnessed Nephis absorb the shining crown he had worn—a Memory—into her soul core.[31]

After paying their respects to the First Lord's remains, Sunny and the cohort learned from Nephis that the headband he had left behind—the Dawn Shard—could massively enhance all Memories nearby, giving her and her allies a fighting chance against Gunlaug, whose golden armor, being an Echo rather than a Memory, remained unaffected.[32]

Shard Memories

Reveal

After Nephis revealed the Dawn Shard's power and that Gunlaug's golden armor was an Echo (courtesy of her spy), Sunny explained that the true goal was to find the final statue the First Lord had sought, and Nephis announced she would confront its guardian—inviting volunteers but warning that no one must deliver the guardian's final blow unless they had first reached and touched the statue.[33]

Sunny realized that the Shard Memories were tied to statues and their Nightmare Champions, considered the implications of possibly acquiring one himself, and then led the cohort into a massive cavern where they immediately faced the terrifying Spire guardian of the hidden statue.[34]

Sunny faced the Spire Messenger in the cavern, relying on his enhanced Memories, the Dawn Shard, and his skills to survive, finally crippling one wing with the Midnight Shard while evading the creature's attacks and racing toward the giant statue.[35]

Sunny and the cohort fought the Spire Messenger, with Sunny crippling its wing and finally killing it with a coordinated attack, but the group was left severely wounded except for Sunny and Cassie, who helped tend to everyone's injuries while reflecting on the danger and the near-heroic recklessness of Nephis.[36]

Sunny discovered the Moonlight Shard, an Ascended Memory dagger that appeared instantly in his hand, giving him the ability to strike unseen and kill Fallen creatures without the Crown of Dawn, while the cohort recovered from their wounds in the underground cavern and prepared for the deadly journey ahead, reflecting on how far Sunny had come and the bloodshed still awaiting them.[37]

Aftermath

Three months later, a battle-hardened and heavily scarred cohort, having survived countless horrors and absorbed vast amounts of Shadow Fragments and Memories, returned to the Dark City, each member physically and mentally transformed by their trials while Sunny assessed their growth and his own nearing full Shadow Core saturation.[38]
