Shades are the silent shadows that rest in Sunny's soul sea.[1][2]

Note: Sunny started calling the silent shadows inside his soul sea as "Shades" starting from Chapter 2283 to avoid confusion since his Shadows had their own identity.

Description

Each shade possessed different strengths and limitations, and while all were powerful, their effectiveness varied depending on the situation, particularly when facing a single overwhelmingly powerful enemy.[3]

Shades did not quite possess a Will of their own. Even though Sacred shades were somewhat different, they still could not compare to real Spirits, and the Will they could exert was far less potent than that of living beings. This limitation could be partially remedied, as demonstrated in Chapter 2892 when Sunny used his incarnations to enhance the Wolf.[3]

Shadow Domain

In Chapter 2890, Sunny had looked into his Runes being back to the Nightmare Spell, under Shades, which contains all the soldiers of the Shadow Legion, and that by focusing on a particular one, a short description appeared. Because the number of shades was immense, the Spell somehow made it appear both compact and nearly infinite, existing in both states at the same time. Sunny gradually learned how to navigate the vast field of runes with no more than a thought.[4]

Notable Shades

Sunny had slain countless monstrous beings across terrifying realms, their shadow fragments absorbed into his soul sea.[1][2] Now, these silent shadows serve him in his Shadow Legion.[5]

  • Most of the shadows were abominations — the Mountain King, the formless shadow of the unborn Spawn of the Vile Thieving Bird, the Forsaken Knight, the Mordant Mimic, the Terror of LO49, the mountainous Titan Goliath
  • There were plenty of humans too — the nameless old slaver, Harper, Harus, Caster, Pierce, the Red Priest, the War Maidens, the soldiers of the Ivory City, Knight Amiran and the many Awakened of the Great Clans he had killed in East Antarctica, Saint Dire Fang and many more. There was also Solvane. Two of her, actually — one that he had slain on the Chained Island, and the other he had slain in the Kingdom of Hope.

Details

In the great hall of a ruined cathedral, which has been transformed into a forge, the shadow of the King of Swords is working at the far end of the hall, forging armor. He uses manifested shadows as the raw material and the altar as an anvil. His hammer shapes the shadows into massive pieces of armor. He retains his extraordinary craftsmanship but has no desires or emotions. He is at peace, dedicating his afterlife to blacksmithing.[6]

Sunny originally wanted to destroy Anvil's shadow due to a deep resentment. He saw it as a taint on his soul despite its value. However, recognizing the shadow's usefulness, Sunny decides against destruction and instead assigns it a role. The shadow of Anvil is made the blacksmith and armorer of the Shadow Legion.[6] (See also Anvil's shadow)

In Chapter 2633, Sunny summoned the shadow of Puppeteer Moth whose countless strands of ethereal black silk shot forward, spreading through the air like a spiderweb, so fine that they were almost invisible. Each of these strings buried itself in the back of a shade, forming a connection between the Puppeteer Moth and the shades of the Shadow Legion. At the same time, one of Sunny's incarnations transformed into a shadow and wrapped itself around the Sacred shade, sharing its senses, allowing him to experience the overwhelming connection between the Puppeteer Moth and his undying army, giving him a nearly flawless control of his army.

Condemnation 2120
(Expelled from Sunny's soul in Chapter 2400-2401)
In the Shadow Realm, when the shadow of Condemnation became vulnerable, Sunny rushed forward despite his severely damaged body, gripping the splinter of an ivory fang and plunging into the whirlwind of black dust. Ignoring the weakened alien force trying to absorb him, he stabbed the ivory blade, made from the fang of a powerful Soul Serpent and imbued with his infinitely cold killing intent, into the very heart of the dark whirlwind, where a perfect sphere was forming from the shard of shattered bone. Channeling his will through the fang, he willed it to deliver death and destruction, and when the blade pierced the heart of Condemnation, he felt an imperceptible ripple spread through the world and something ancient and vast break apart, followed by hollow emptiness. The whirlwind was torn apart, the black dust settled, and the shards of bone fell, while the ivory fang shattered in his hand and a nearly inexhaustible torrent of shadow fragments flooded his soul, replenishing his shadow cores and forming the seventh, final core.[15]
Abundance 2348; Lost in Chapter 2977; Consummed by Vile Thieving Bird in Chapter 2978 Sunny defeated the Snow Worm by executing a layered strategy designed to weaken it from both inside and out, with every cut he delivered serving to allow Obsidian Wasps to crawl into the Cursed Beast's body and wreak havoc internally while Kai and Slayer embedded Finality Arrows enchanted to lock portions of its body in space, restricting its ability to exercise its infinite power. At the same time, Sunny poisoned the creature's soul with his deathly will, suffocating the spark that sustained its life, while Kai and Slayer supported him with destructive arrows and their Transcendent wills, amplifying the damage. This created a reinforcing cycle where the weakening of the Snow Worm's soul reduced its resistance to the binding enchantments, which further limited its power and allowed the Obsidian Wasps to inflict greater physical harm, weakening its life force even more. As its ability to command infinity grew unstable, the Snow Worm was forced to shrink continuously, its immense form diminishing until it became a tiny maggot, at which point Sunny crushed it under his armored boot, killing his first Cursed One.[16]
Wolf (Snow Wolves' Leader) 2366
2949(Stolen)
2979(Returned)
Sunny killed the Wolf by activating the colossal weave he had etched into the mountain inside Ariel's Game, causing the entire volcano to ignite with blinding, incandescent radiance and unleash a wave of annihilating heat powerful enough to incinerate ash, melt rock, turn lava into plasma, and radiate outward across the slopes. Although the Wolf had already been wounded and managed to survive the initial wave of heat, the devastation did not end there, as the damage absorbed by the melting volcano was released in a devastating shockwave when the volcano shuddered and exploded, disintegrating its slopes into an expanding mass of burning rock and boiling lava. The following shockwave tore what little remained of the Wolf's scorched body apart, killing it through the trap Sunny had woven into the volcano itself.[17]

Wolf stood apart from the others. It was described as a Spirit of primal fury, cunning, and hunting, personifying the concept of the Wolf. Wolves were known as exceptional hunters capable of bringing down prey much larger than themselves. Additionally, the Wolf had been a Cursed Demon, a being of a higher Class than both Abundance and the Rat King[3]
Rat King 2386
2977(Lost), 2978(Confirmed Stolen by Vile Thieving Bird)
Sunny killed the Rat King after Kai used the final enchantment of the Supreme bow Sunny had crafted, the modified [Death Dealer], pouring most of his essence into a single deadly arrow that struck the mountain peak and obliterated it, crushing countless rats and, more importantly, hitting the single rat that served as the progenitor and source of the Rat King. With the death of its progenitor, the swarm ceased its endless growth, no new rats appeared to replace the fallen, and the vast horde descended into chaos, with the vermin turning on each other and losing all guidance. Seizing the opportunity, Sunny separated from Slayer and poured out his essence, manifesting countless shadows to finish off the remaining stragglers across the mountain, and just before the sun disappeared beyond the horizon, he heard the familiar words confirming the kill: [You have slain an enemy.], marking the end of the battle against the Cursed Beast, the Rat King.[18]
Puppeteer 2408 The Puppeteer was slain when the Stone Saint (assumed by Sunny in Chapter 2404), exploited the fatal vulnerability caused by the immense strain it endured to slow the flow of time, adding his own indomitable will and authority to the devastating pressure of time itself wishing to flow free, which caused the dam of the Puppeteer's control to crack and collapse. When time resumed, the giant moth lunged forward and grievously wounded him, piercing his armor and breaking his arm, but the Stone Saint had already tossed his shield into the air beforehand. As the Puppeteer moved to extinguish the flame burning in his chest, he caught the falling shield and brought it down with the weight of a mountain, the rim crushing the Puppeteer's neck and slicing its head clean off, causing the gargantuan body to shudder, go limp, and fall still as the cursed tyrant was no more.[19]

The Puppeteer Moth was technically the most powerful among Sunny's Sacred shades, being a Tyrant. However, its abilities did not lend themselves well to direct confrontation.[3]
Vile Thieving Bird 2977 The Sacred Shade of the Vile Thieving Bird was a deranged Sacred Terror that used Sunny in order to cleanse itself of Corruption. After accomplishing its goal, it vanished into the night and took a significant portion of Sunny's possessions. After being killed by Sunny, its shade entered his Soul Sea, where it somehow transformed itself into a Shadow Creature and escaped. This was unusual, as Sunny's other Sacred shades had never disobeyed him in such a way.[20]

The Vile Thieving Bird had broken out of a Nightmare, brought itself back to life, escaped Corruption through death, and then escaped death itself. Sunny regarded it as an unparalleled escape artist. After escaping, it became loose somewhere in the Dream Realm, and Sunny believed it would eventually leave the Tomb of Ariel and cause trouble for powerful beings in the future.[20]

After becoming a Shadow Creature, the Vile Thieving Bird appeared to develop a preference for Sunny's dark and dim possessions. It selectively stole shades from Sunny's Soul Sea, taking thousands or possibly tens of thousands that Sunny had collected over years of battle, including the Rat King and the Defiled Seeker of Truth. It also appeared to have destroyed and consumed Abundance.[20]

The Vile Thieving Bird also stole several of Sunny's Memories, including [Handy Bracelet], [Quintessence Pearl], [Definitely Not Me], and Nightmare's saddle. It also took Sunny's [Shadow Chair], which had originally belonged to Noctis. In addition, it stole the Citadel Sunny had conquered in the Burned Forest. Its removal was so complete that Sunny could no longer remember its appearance or location, as if the conflict through which he had claimed it had never happened. Sunny suspected the Citadel was being converted into one of the bird's nests.[20]

Shadow Weave

Main article: Shadow Weave
Reveal

Shadow Weave allowed Sunny to channel his shadow essence directly into his shades, greatly increasing their power. It also gave him the beginnings of an ability to influence living shadows, although he acknowledged that discovering the full extent of this ability would require experimentation.[21]

Shadow Weave also deepened Sunny's understanding of shades and their relationship to true Shadows. Sunny recognized that shades fundamentally differed from Shadows: they lacked agency, individuality, Will, and the capacity to grow or evolve because they were dead and static. Shadows, by contrast, possessed their own minds, individuality, Will, and the ability to develop. Through Shadow Weave, Sunny gained the foundational understanding required to transform suitable shades into true Shadows, while also realizing that not every shade was fit for such a transformation, though many unsuitable ones could be helped along the way by his power.[21]

Trivia

  • In Chapter 1661, The moment Sunny claimed ownership of the Nameless Temple, the legion of shadows (shade) gathered silently around the temple. Though still lifeless and motionless, it gave the impression that they might awaken at any moment to worship their new master.
  • In Chapter 2247, after attaining Supreme rank, the shadows inside Sunny's soul sea prostrated themselves before him as if welcoming their sovereign.
  • In Chapter 2252, the army of shadows had left the peaceful stillness of Sunny's soul and entered the real world for the first time.
  • Unlike humans who became soldiers of the Shadow Legion—whose Memories and mundane weapons were lost upon death—the Stone Saints remained equipped with the same armaments they had wielded in life. This was suggested to be either due to the unique way their armor and weapons were forged or because they shared a special relationship with their armaments, making them a part of themselves. As a result, the shades of the Stone Saints continued to appear encased in impregnable plate armor, wielding sublime weapons and, in most cases, carrying indomitable shields, making them considerably more formidable than ordinary shades.[22]
  • In Chapter 3114, Sunny used Shadow Weave to sacrifice thousands of shades within his Soul Sea, converting them into Shadow Fragments to rebuild the destroyed core.
  • In Chapter 3153, Sunny granted independence to his Shadows by removing their Shadow Cores from his soul and embedding them into their own souls, allowing their existing cores to become complete. After completing the process, he consumed a great number of his shades to restore the Shadow Cores he had lost. A great number of shades vanished in the process, diminishing the power of his Domain, although innumerable shades remained.
