“ ...The Flame is Desire, and Desire is the Flame. But flame... needs fuel to burn, Liberator. It needs to be fed. It needs to devour something in order to sustain itself. Our longing, our yearning, our desire, our hope — they fan the Flame. You and I are different, but in the end, we are both the same. Our lives are fuel, and we only exist to be devoured by the Flame. ”

― Puppeteer to Sunny,
Chapter 2398 Fuel of Desire

Puppeteer is the Snow Tyrant and opponent of the Ash Tyrant inside Ariel's Game.[2]

Appearance

A gargantuan black moth perched atop a silken peak, its tenebrous wings blanketing the slope. Its legs were like obsidian pillars, and its antennae stretched far into the sky, swaying in the wind. Though it resembled the Nightmare Butterflies of Ariel's Tomb, it was much more gigantic and harrowing. Its terror did not lie merely in appearance—looking at it instilled a chilling, eerie hopelessness.[1]

Ability

The Snow Tyrant is revealed to be a giant Puppeteer Moth, also known as Doubt, whose primary ability is to infect the hearts of living beings with doubt and manipulate them like puppets. It is a highly potent mental manipulator, capable of subjugating even powerful adversaries by making them doubt themselves and binding them with invisible strings. Despite its terrifying appearance and formidable powers, the Snow Tyrant is physically weaker and more fragile than other Cursed Tyrants. However, the true challenge lies in resisting the Snow Tyrant's insidious mind control, as falling under its influence would be devastating. Doubt is an especially dangerous weapon because no one is immune to it—not even Supremes like Sunny.[3]

It is capable of launching powerful mental attacks that can invade and corrupt the mind. Its assaults are insidious, irresistible, and able to pierce even strong mental defenses and the armor of Will. It manifests as an invisible, mind-altering presence, spreading tendrils of corruption that compromise sections of a victim's consciousness. The Puppeteer appears to be testing or probing mental resistance, and its influence is not capital-C Corruption, but a form of mental plague.[6]

Origin

The Puppeteer is a parasitic, mind-controlling entity that begins its life as a Worm of Doubt, infiltrating the minds of its victims by planting insidious thoughts. Over time, it corrodes their will, ultimately devouring them from within and turning them into mere puppets. After exhausting its use of a host, the Puppeteer Worm undergoes a horrifying transformation, evolving into a Puppeteer Moth by emerging from the "chrysalis" of human minds it had twisted, used, and destroyed.[1]

In its evolved form, the Puppeteer radiates an oppressive aura of hopelessness so powerful that even simply looking at it fills observers with despair and the urge to give up. Its presence is malevolent and deeply wrong, evoking a visceral, instinctual fear. Survivors of its influence, like Sunny, retain a disturbing sense of familiarity with the creature and the black silk it leaves behind—a residue of the psychic imprint it leaves on its victims. This silk, found among gnawed bones, was once fashioned into armor, suggesting it carries residual power even after the creature has moved on.[1]

There was something malevolent, terrifying, and fundamentally wrong about it that made Sunny want to give up. And yet, it felt strangely familiar. It was the Puppeteer—once a Puppeteer Worm that had evolved into this Puppeteer Moth by twisting and feeding on human minds, using them as a chrysalis before destroying them and emerging in this new form.[1]

[A worm of doubt once found its way into a righteous king's heart. With time, the king was devoured from the inside and became its puppet. A lifetime later, the Puppeteer Worm escaped from the king's dead body, leaving behind a cocoon of black silk. No one knows where it went; however, once people dared to approach the silent castle, they found the silk among the mountains of gnawed bones and fashioned it into an armor.]

— Description of the Puppeteer's Shroud,
Chapter 24 Moving up in the World

The version Sunny faced in Ariel's Game was a fully evolved form: the Puppeteer Moth. Whether it is the same creature responsible for the Mountain King's fall, or merely one of its kind, is unknown. What is certain is that the familiar, dreadful presence and the black silk it perches on confirm its identity.[1]

Trivia

  • Sunny did not believe that the Puppeteer is free from the madness afflicting Nightmare Creatures.[7]
  • Its goal was either to consume Sunny or infect him with Corruption to turn him into a puppet or thrall.[7]
  • In Chapter 2633, Sunny summoned the shadow of Puppeteer Moth whose countless strands of ethereal black silk shot forward, spreading through the air like a spiderweb, so fine that they were almost invisible. Each of these strings buried itself in the back of a shade, forming a connection between the Puppeteer Moth and the shades of the Shadow Legion. At the same time, one of Sunny's incarnations transformed into a shadow and wrapped itself around the Sacred shade, sharing its senses, allowing him to experience the overwhelming connection between the Puppeteer Moth and his undying army, giving him a nearly flawless control of his army.
